BOINC 5.8.8 has been released to all for the Windows and MacOS platforms

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

Windows Release Notes
New CPU Scheduler.
New Work Fetch Policy.
CPU Capability detection.
Revamped logging solution.
Improved security for POSIX compliant systems (only implemented for the Mac)
Add support for file compression on upload.
BOINC Simple GUI.
Added memory usage limits for BOINC applications. (Check preferences for new settings)

Though there are actually a lot more improvements than that :-)

ROSETTA@HOME really needs to update to the latest server software to let participants take full advantage of this client.
Especially as we cannot set the Memory Limits for the BOINC Application at Rosetta@home currently.

Also has the CPU throttling. This is where you don't need add-on software to limit your CPU utilization to a given percentage. There is a setting in your general preferences, which you might chose to define differently for up to 4 different locations, where you can define the maximum CPU% you want BOINC to use.

...and don't forget to allow the new BOINC version access through your ZoneAlarm firewall.

Actually the correct procedure to update BOINC is to just run the new boinc 5.8.8 installation file that was just downloaded. It does all the hard work of stopping everything for you.

(at least in windows ;-) though stopping it yourself does no harm either)

Have D/Loaded 5.8.8 and installed, but now find that I cant connect to Rosetta at all[message boards, my account etc]. Only way is to use my ISP search - which is a bit boring. Dont know about WUs yet as not due for some time.
Message I see when trying to connect to Rosetta on 5.8.8 is 'Loading' but nothing happens.

half an hour later- have retried to connect to rosetta boards but still see message 'loading'. Have found prev BOINC version adn am running that

further to my last message - 36073
Have now reinstalled 5.8.8 and it works as far as receiving/sending completed WUs are concerned but I still cannot connect through BOINC Manager to Rosetta/Proteins to access message boards, my account etc etc. I have to go through my ISP. All I see is 'Loading' in the Start menu but nothing happens.
Is this a feature of 5.8.8?
Am on a Broadband connection, everything else connects fine so it seems to be a BOINC failing

interesting, the benchmark scores changed dramatically, I am use to get:

Measured floating point speed 3650.21 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 2093.19 million ops/sec

now, I get:

3455 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
4204 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

2nd run:

3481 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
1541 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

3rd run
3475 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
2456 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

4th run
3475 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
3557 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

I guess, the benchmark is really broken, the run to run variation is around 50% on float. any way the *Stone benchmark suite is totally inapropriate, too old, it was good for 386 and Dec Alpha, it is now time to fix this!
I lost mips with the new version, on one of the fastest machine on Rosetta (the Quad core 4 Ghz) ... give me back my mips and flops!
kidding:)

I don't even want to repeat what I had to go through to get this new version of Boinc to work on computer. Suffice to say, to anyone who is thinking about installing the new Boinc, use the "No New Work" function on your current client so the client doesn't get any new work. Let what is running run till it is finished, let it report, then close the Boic client. Then install the new one. Then restart your computer, and make sure you look very closely at the selections under your "Activity" button at the top, to make sure it is not set on "Suspend" and "Network Activity Suspend."
I lost a work unit that was 4 hour in because the new client didn't want to restart it. Or connect for new work after I aborted it. I had to restart my computer twice because it wouldn't fetch new work. What a pain. And the basic view of the client looks like crap.

And now Who's MIPs are off. How is he going to win the Golden Chromosome Award?

That is not a function of BOINC at all but your webbrowser. Boinc has no effect, maybe the website was down when you tried ?

Asto noticed this during test, don't know what the outcome was from the dev team.
Since most don't really care about the benchmark as most projets, including there pet project seti@home, have moved away from it. I think it is as long as it good enough ;-) You want it back and some, just recompile with SSE2 in standard VS2005, or compile with your Intel stuff with whatever SSE you like... oh and fp-fast :-)

The only thing it will effect is the estimate of how much work BOINC thinks you need.

I installed 5.8.8 and found it had "lost" my computers location. It had used the default "None", (this machine is nominally attached to my "Work" group), and had hence reset all of my projects to receive an equal CPU share of 100, which is incorrect.

It may well have updated this the next time it connected to a project for whatever reason. I noticed this and corrected it, I do not know, therefore, if this is likely to be a problem.

Fluffy.
Dont think your reply applies. I was in the message boards on prev BOINC and saw that new version was available so i installed 5.8.8. Since then the D/Up loads of Rosetta WUs work fine and I can wander the internet. ONLY when I hit any of the
'website' buttons to connect to Rosetta [home, message boards, my account etc] do I get the problem. All I can see then is a 'Loading' message in the start menu -
but nothing ever loads. When I close the button get the message 'program not responding'. MSN must be fed up with the number of times i have reported this to them! I can only say that it all happened exactly during/after installing 5.8.8. I can get to Rosetta through my ISP with no problems. Fault is only on the website buttons in BOINC manager. I checked my 'control panel' and it seems fine but am far from an expert. If the prob is the webbrowser how come I can send receive WUs and roam the internet but not connect to Rosetta manually though BOINC manager? Situation is still present.

Do you get %1% in the address bar ?
And what web browser is it using (i.e. the default web browser)
For instance my default web browser on one of my computers is Maxthon 2 and it just get %1% put into the address bar, I assume this is a fault of Maxthon.*
If IE7 is set as the default I have no problems on any of my computers.

There has been a report in the dev list that someone on the Mac release is having a similar problem to what you report...

But as far as I know all it does it pass the http link to the default web browser.

EDIT/ I just check with with an updated Maxthon and it seems to work fine now.

CPU detection in new BOINC is missing SSSE3
On Core 2 , i get: GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.66GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 7] [fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 sse3 mmx]

I know for sure (hehehehe) that my Processors include SSSE3.

Somebody can flag it to the boinc people?

Fluffy - All I see is 'Loading' - nothing else the pc shows nothing else(no percent), the page is all white!!
Default browser seems ok as I can get everywhere else, but will try to set ie7 as default to see what happens, but it is past midnight here and bed is calling loudly, will try in the morning here and report back

The links under those buttons are stored in your account_*.xml file(s). For Rosetta that's in account_boinc.bakerlab.org_rosetta.xml
Check if the GUI URLs are all correct.

As said, BOINC is using the browser that is set up as the default one under the operating system. In Windows that's set through Add/Remove programs, Set program access and defaults, check the browser you want to use as default. OK out.
