Hello,

I reinstalled BOINC on a new laptop a few days ago (and have since joined your project). But I have not been able to obtain any work for the project. The tasks all say "Downloading" and stays at 0%; under 'Transfers' the status seems to alternate between 'Retry in...' (often a number of hours), or 'Download: pending (project backoff...), also with a timer running into hours.

I'm running Windows 7 and the Comodo firewall. I have not received any firewall messages indicating that its blocking anything. BOINC is set to run even when I'm working on the PC.

Can you help?

Thanks,

Pieter Watson

I would suggest Comodo is the likely culprit - can you allow internet access to boinc.exe (not boincmgr.exe)?

Also, these might be relevant:

Thanks for your reply.

I have both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe identified as trusted applications. No entries are generated in the firewall log when I force an 'Update' for the project, or 'Retry now', under transfers.

The stuff in the links you sent me is over my head, I fear.

I don't know, what this Comodo thing is... is it one of those "security suites", i.e. antivirus and firewall in one package?

If it's just firewall, you could try to disable or even uninstall it (some firewalls can't be disabled completely).

To test the connection to the server you could try to download the files thru your browser / download manager (disable network in BOINC Manager, download files to the rosetta directory, enable network in BOINC; BOINC should skip all existing files on next download attempt). The URLs can be found in the client_state.xml.

All,

Thanks for your replies.

The simplest solution is to install BOINC in the ProgramData directory (on Windows 7). If installed in the default Program Files directory, Windows' privilege settings prevents it from creating the files it uses to manage downloads.

COMODO is one of those FREE Internet Security Programs (which has all in ones, anti-virus', firewalls). In my Opinion, FREE Security Programs are worth Stuff All: You Get What You Pay For. I once had a Free Program on one of My PC's and I Lost Everything, because it couldn't tell The Good From The Bad. If you aren't willing to INVEST up to a couple of hundred Dollars (depending on your needs) on Protecting Your Computer & it's Contents, which could be worth Thousands, don't expect much in return. you may as well just stick with Windows Pre-Installed Security Program & Firewall. Also, if there are multiple Security Programs Installed, they sometimes Kill Each Other.

I am having similar Issues as Pieter. But mine Relates to UPLOADING Completed Tasks ..... I currently have 3 Tasks attempting to Upload, and one Ready to Report.
Those attempting to Upload are Active for a while but then change to Retry in nn:nn or somethimes Retry in nn:nn:nn
After that time (or unless I manually click 'Retry Now', they change to Active, and are once again Active for anything from a few seconds to a few minutes, and then revert to Retry in nn:nn or Retry in nn:nn:nn
If I click 'retry Now', the 3 Tasks revert to Active: but if I allow them to proceed and retry automatically, each Task Retrys one at a time when that time is up.
However, after a certain amount of Retrys, they change to Backoff in nn:nn or Backoff in nn:nn:nn

Below is a Copy of The Event log relating to Te Tasks in Question ...

Well, as I said, I don't know about Comodo, but OTOH I'd never recommend anybody to invest even 1 cent on security software. I always used free antivirus software, never had an noteworthy issue (actually waaay less issues that many others who paid for their security software), now I'm using Avast or MSE on my systems together with the windows firewall. Works perfect for me, the only thing I did (as a precaution, didn't really need to) is excluding BOINC data dir from av-scanning.

Also, if there are multiple Security Programs Installed, they sometimes Kill Each Other.

That's true, never more than 1 AV and 1 firewall.

Regarding your current connection issues, you might want to check recent posts in "Problems and Technical Issues with Rosetta@home".
