Hi !

Is limiting CPU usage on general prefferences working at all ? I've tried putting values different than 100% there so that when I'm working with my laptom on my lap, it doesn't burn my legs because of heat, but it doesn't seems to work.
Whatever I put under general or specific (home, work, school) prefferences, my computer always use 100%.
At boinc client (version 5.4.11), message says that specfic prefference was applied, but doesn't change CPU usage.
Any ideas ?

It's not been implemented yet (I believe it will in one of the soon to be released BOINC versions).

For now you can try Threadmaster to do the same thing.

Out of curiosity, why are you wanting to limit CPU usage? If you're running on a laptop I recommend having a look at reducing the voltage - I'd dropped my (Pentium M - Dothan 1.86GHz) from 1.35V to 1.05V and it runs cooler now with Rosetta than it did without before.

Only reason I want to do this is that i don't know how to drop the voltage...
I gues i should be looking at bios ? or.... ?

Also, excuse my ignorance, but what is Threadmaster ?
I'm not realy into computers.....

Glad you got Threadmaster working.

You might find reducing the voltage beneficial too - I was in a hurry earlier so didn't explain. The advantages are:
Reduced temperatures
Increased battery life (can be considerable - mine is around 25% longer now)
Faster charging
Reduced power consumption
Reduced strain on hardware (peak temperatures are what's most important here, and my lappy runs Rosetta much cooler than it used to get to without Rosetta!)

The manufacturers have to use conservative settings as they have to run at a voltage that all the CPUs will run at, but in reality almost all will happily run at much lower voltages.

The program I use is RMClock - I don't find the website the easiest to navigate, so the exe is here.

If you need any more info then post back and I'll run you through it.

What i like though about Threadmaster is, that any process can be controlled, so added AD Aware, SpyBot, Disk Defraggers and the like in there too at very low percentages.

You shouldn't need to use the override file since Rosetta@Home already implements that in hte online preferences.

DCDC, Your post was very usefull for me too, one of my computers works at 70C while running Rosetta and only checking "enable termal monitor" the temp is now at 65C, later I will study the matter of reducing the voltage. Thanks a lot!

I'm sure there are more detailed answers out there, but the main thing is that Windows task manager is basically a way to observe tasks running on your machine. Threadmaster is a way to set up some rules about which tasks are allowed to use how much CPU, and it then enforces the rules for you.

Threadmaster can be used to run your machine at say 70% of CPU, rather then 100%. All Task Manager can do is go in and end something. Some people (especially laptop owners) prefer to run a little less then full throttle. This helps their machines run cooler, which means their lap is more comfortable or their fan runs at a lower rate and makes less noise.

Help i am new to threadmaster. I installed it and now my CPU has started to run at 20% how do i increase it? I am running XP and i cant find the control for thread master, could someone help?

Q1 Are you running XP?

Q2 Does your computer run at 20% when BOINC/Rosetta is actually crunching. The reason I am asking about this because - most computers run at less than 20% during average usage. Everything may be perfect if you are not actually crunching Rosetta. My computer averages about 5% when I am just surfing the web.

Q3 Are you familiar with the registry keys? Have you ever used regedit? And most important - did you modify any of the registry keys created by threadmaster? Threadmaster does provide instructions but they are almost gibberish to people who are unfamilar with the registry keys.

Q1. Yes i am running Windows XP and i have just graduated from Windows ME.
Q2. I was a little wrong 20% is peak value Average is 14% and yes this value is with Rosetta running full speed?
At this rate running my computer 24 hrs will still not allow me to meet any deadline?
Q3. Yes i am familiar with registry but no i have not gone into the registry becuse i am new to XP.
What i have tried to do is kill the process Ctrl+Alt+Del. My processar started RUNNING at base line? that is 3 or 4%.
Thats it nothing else and i give up. Please help and thanks
