My Reasons For Crunching Rosetta

10) It runs on Macs.
9) I choose how long work units run for as well as how much disk space I designate to the project.
8) I can contribute to the world of medical science by simply having my mac do some positive work while I'm away from it.
7) The screensaver starts conversations and even encourages others to join in.
6) It puts perspective in my life and I realise that I'm quite lucky to be healthy.
5) It would be great to have a cure for diseases and conditions that take loved ones from us leaving us to heal with time.
4) My cousin was diagnosed with cancer when he was 2 and a half years old. After bouts of chemotherapy, he has been given the all clear. Chemo isn't a kind treatment, to see it on a young child is heartbreaking. I'd never felt so helpless.
3) It's a fantastically warm community to be part of with communication between researchers, mods and volunteers.

1) I can help save the world while being asleep. That's pretty nifty.

I think the time you dedicate to this project is immense. I learned a lot from your posts, and I can tell that you care a lot about this project. Your threads are very descriptive and have pulled me to the project. Thanks!

Despite biology not being my best science (more of an astronomy/physics/maths type), helping science in general is important, here are my reasons:

1. My father died of cancer.
2. My grandfather died of Alzheimer's.
3. Research is important in any field of science.
4. Everyone can help.
5. Computers are more efficiently used
6. Disease can be wiped out.
7. A better understanding of the building blocks of life
8. Nice and friendly community
9. Regular updates about the status of the project
10. Responsible scientific team

your top 10 are similar to my top 10
just the top 2/3 are different

1)mother in law died of abdominal cancer that went to her bones and organs after 14 years of fighting.

2a)grandmother died of old age and manic depression combo. her condition was dependent on lithium levels and other chemistry.

2b)grandfather (same family line) died of Parkinson's and old age.

10 reasons I crunch.

1. I have Type 1 diabetes.
2. My kid brother has Type 1 diabetes.
3. My friend Anita has Type 1 diabetes.
4. My friend Allison has Type 1 diabetes.
5. My friend George has Type 1 diabetes.
6. My friend Manny has Type 1 diabetes.
7. My friend Scott has Type 1 diabetes.
8. My friend Sandra's son has Type 1 diabetes.
9. My friend Sara has Type 1 diabetes.
10. My friend Paige's daughter has Type 1 diabetes.
and so on.

This is a kids disease. But we all gave up being kids a long time ago.

1: My belief that major Breakthroughs come through long hard years in the trenches developing programs like Rosetta.

2: My Brother is a Type one Diabetic and just recenctly contracted a Staff infection from a Dialysis Machine and lost the use of his legs plus a four month stay in the Hosipital.

3: My father died of Cancer. When he was in the last stages of the disease all they had to offer was some Hormone, that did not work.

4: I like to see a computer actually doing what a computer was intended to do.

5: The Graphics are Cool.

6: I would like to see the Sequenced Human Genome Morph into an actual Human Protome. So Some real good could start coming from such a huge effort.

7: The Baker Lab needs the help.

8: I like to gain points to better my world BOINC standing.

9: There is no intelligent life beyond Earth so SETI@Home was no longer Cool.

10: Because.....

I like points 9 and 10 and I understand your point 3. Mother in law died of cancer. 14 yr fight with standard treatment and such. Some sort of experimental drug was tried, but the cancer was to strong and it overcame the treatment. So points 4,7 is also another big point for me.

The main reason I use my computers to crunch Rosetta@home is because I lost my father to brain cancer on June 22, 2006, and so I want to help, in some small way, find a cure for this and for other diseases.

R@H gets my crunch because of

1. Grandpa died of Alzheimer's/Dementia
2. Grandma died of a bad liver disease that doctors couldn't cure
3. Uncle had cancer
4. Aunt died of diabetes
5. Family friends had cancer
6. If you can stop diseases from afflicting just by hitting the on button on ur computer y not?
7. Same goes for terrorists attacks
8. I want my kids, when i have them (only 15) to have 1 less problem in the world
9. I would like to be in the medical career field
10. Gives me an understanding of proteins and i feel like im contributing to the community

If you want 15 kids, you had better start figuring out how they can feed themselves and where they can live on this already overcrowded planet. There are too many of us already.
Please forgive me if you think I am interferring, but I think I have done my bit, restricting my family to one fanastic young lady, who is now the architect of our experimental earth sheltered house.
