My concern is that I have the project in the portfolio of some machines that I look after at other sites that I don't see daily, one that I only see a few times a year. It is not the only project at these sites, so the risk of running empty is most unlikely. I tried to get the councils permission to put BOINC up on the general use computers in the local library but they refused because the guy in charge did not like the wording of the licence.

I haven't had a download problem yet (knock on wood!), though I'm still using Windows 7. What I've seen here and in other thread is that folks using Windows 10 have been reporting this problem.

I wish that were true, but it isn't. I have both W7 & W10 in different locations and it happens to both.
It only needs one problem task to ruin the whole machine's workload

My work has shutdown now, so of my 4 machines the work one is shutdown - too bad. I'm at home running my PC and laptop 247 on Rosetta, but I have one other where I lodge when I'm away from home which is probably the most productive and also runs 247.

A quick check shows it has just one task outstanding, meaning it's got a stalled download and that's preventing any more Rosetta tasks coming down until it's exhausted its buffer and has now switched to its backup project (WCG). I'm 100+ miles away with no plans to travel down and put it right for the next 3 weeks (and more). Maybe the task needs to pass its due date before Boinc aborts it. It's certainly not shifting of its own accord.

We've all been reporting this stalled download server-side issue for 5 weeks and the square root of nothing has been done about it. I know ModSense sent an email about it 2 weeks ago, but nothing changed.

So here we are. I've been here for 12 years now and I can only remember one significant occasion where we've had any response about anything.

I'm not even sure why I still get surprised. I suppose WCG will be pleased at least <sigh>

About a year ago, I tried to get DR, (Danmarks Radio - somewhat equivalent to the BBC in England), to put a spot in the after dinner current affairs program to tell people about BOINC. I am absolutely certain people would run it IF THEY KNEW ABOUT IT, which, sadly, is not the case. They did not reply, perhaps as a more "current newsworthy issue" is on the agenda, they might be more inclined to at least think about it.

I've also experienced HTTP errors. My BOINC client gets a shortage of x86_64 WUs for Rosetta and I got more and more unused cores :(
I'm filling it with folding@home, but it has a WU shortages as well.

I've also experienced HTTP errors. My BOINC client gets a shortage of x86_64 WUs for Rosetta and I got more and more unused cores :(
I'm filling it with folding@home, but it has a WU shortages as well.

About a year ago, I tried to get DR, (Danmarks Radio - somewhat equivalent to the BBC in England), to put a spot in the after dinner current affairs program to tell people about BOINC. I am absolutely certain people would run it IF THEY KNEW ABOUT IT, which, sadly, is not the case. They did not reply, perhaps as a more "current newsworthy issue" is on the agenda, they might be more inclined to at least think about it.

My concern is that I have the project in the portfolio of some machines that I look after at other sites that I don't see daily, one that I only see a few times a year. It is not the only project at these sites, so the risk of running empty is most unlikely. I tried to get the councils permission to put BOINC up on the general use computers in the local library but they refused because the guy in charge did not like the wording of the licence.

Typical council employee. I used to work at a school. Easier to get forgiveness than permission. I installed Boinc on 500 computers while they weren't looking. I got a few complaints about louder fans, so I removed it from those. Most continued long after I left.

This is quite strange, because it's not slow or unreliable downloads (which could mean a busy server or network). It reliably, reproducibly, downloads the first 2.5KB of the 3.2KB file and then stalls. It's not a problem with the BOINC client. Trying to download the file with other software has the same problem:

In Scotland, we have a phrase "jobs for the boys". People who don't want to do anything, but want to earn money, they work for the government instead of a private company, where they'd be held accountable for low productivity.

I would like to add my observation on the issue. Both me and Nicolás experience stuck downloads.
Attempting to get the file with wget consistently and reliably stops at 2.54K .
The files in question are:

10v1nmgb_c1546_10mer_gb_002747.zip
10v3nmgb_c15522_10mer_gb_000010.zip

Could it be a problem with the program Rosetta@Home uses to pack information into zip files? If it leaves out the marker the server download software uses to indicate the end of the file, or enters conflicting information onto the server disks of how big the file is, that could cause the problems we see.

Also, I see the problem when trying to download zip files in the 1 KB to 4 KB range. The downloads appear to normally happen in chunks of about 1 KB in size, then fail when trying to download the last chunk which is less than this size.

I highly doubt that this could be a disk problem. Now almost all disks and file systems use a sector / cluster / block / page size of 4 KB or (rarely) more.

Work with the disk is done in portions of 4 kb, which are either fully readable or not readable at all. I can’t imagine the situation when the disk successfully read part of one sector and stopped in the 2nd half of same sector.

But some damage/corruption to the file system (the logical level of files organization, not physical disks) is possible.
In many file systems, the smallest files (up to several KB in size) are stored not in separate blocks on the disk, but directly in the service tables of the file system. And if these tables are damaged in any way, this could somehow explain the repeated (reproducible) problems with the same file at same point and why such problems only occur with very small files, but have never met with large files. Because storage of larger files are organized differently in the filesystem: for larger files filesystem stores only "meta" information in service tables(like file name/size/date&time created/etc) and file itself is stored as a separate block on the disk. For small files file itself(content) is stored in same same place with "meta" information.

That's the way it should be. But every time the UK government makes a move in that direction, hoards of left wing fools complain about it. So do your roadworks get done in a sensible time frame? We seem to get traffic cones up for a month, then about 3 men appear and stand around leaning on spades for a while, then occasionally you can spot the odd truck or JCB doing something. If only they'd work on less roads at a time instead of spreading out the workers and doing them all at once and very slowly.

Here, the first one is fine (in fact I think the government fines gas companies if they don't get it done quickly). It's the resurfacing that takes ages, presumably because councils are involved. About 5 workers per mile of cones. The vans seem to have private company names on them, but I think they're somehow milking it for all they can get.

Thanks all for the specific details. Even firefox hangs trying to download the file. I have shared the details with the Project Team and they were able to recreate the hang problem. So, hopefully they are on their way to tracking down the issue.
