I can imagine the US side lawsuits now...
Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

Yea mosquitoes could become the next Spotted Owl!! ENDANGERED!! What a dilemma, sue to protect an animal just because it could go extinct or let it go extinct and save lives! My answer is...the mosquitoes headstone will read "the mosquito was a real killer and World is better off without it"! Personally I think there are better animals that need protection from extinction than the lowly mosquito! I don't personally know of any redeeming factor that it provides, other than sharpening our reflexes as we try to swat it. Now if that Japanese guy can do his thing, maybe the mosquito could make a comeback. Although how he would target his subjects is beyond me.

Provided it is even possible to drive the mosquito into extinction this way, I don't think it is a good idea. You're bound to find the one useful function of a mosquito right after you've killed the last one. :)

We could always freeze them and then revive them later on, like we do people. Mickey Mantle's head is frozen, other celebrities too, just so they can come back to life one day. http://www.firstscience.com/home/articles/humans/suspending-life-the-science-of-cryonics_14148.html
