1) Message boards : Cafe Rosetta : "Is Distributed Computing being Distributed Badly?" (Message 19448)

I am floored at the apathy towards these real health projects as well. When I bring it up to people I get blank stares ... or remarks about how they would never loan their machine to anyone -- security issues. I am as anal retentive as the next person when it comes to security in general ... but they just don't get it. If the trust were violated it would become known over time and then they would lose all that free computing power ...
I keep thinking ... just wait until they or someone they love gets cancer ... but then even my step-father ... God bless him ... a cancer survivor, wouldn't let me put the united devices program on his machine and it was doing cancer research. My step-father eventually did die of cancer. I am at loss to understand. I guess some require more time to think it over.

I'd like to back that up. I started on SETI years ago and then moved to United Devices for the cancer/anthrax/genome projects. I stayed there for several years because I love the idea of being able to aid in a direct application of science for disease research. I found that the United Devices web page got to where it wasn't even updated at all with project information (except for active user counts). I went to the web site in England for info but they seemed to stop updating about the project as well though they had static information on the science. I stayed with it because I want to help contribute but when I discovered Rossetta and saw how active it was I just thought "Yes!!!!". I personally don't care about credits .... but I LOVE to see the constant updates about how much power is being generated, etc ... I love just knowing you guys aren't ignoring us. It does make a difference. I don't anything about the science ... but I love that you guys are all excited about it and about how this computing power is allowing to look at more cases, and that you do inform us about it.

in spite of the increase of users? Although I personally LOVE BOINC and all the options it offers ... I wonder if a number of people find it too confusing and abandon quickly after they join ....

So tip your hat, and say thanks Seti for allowing Rosetta to exist.

Thanks SETI !!! (:

I am just satisfied that my spare cycles are going towards research for a cure. It's nice to see some sort of measurement of what you have contributed .. but I am just elated something like this even exists. Credits are just too abstract. Knowing I am part of 40 Teraflops is where it's at !!! (:

Thanks guys ... I appreciate it. I am getting the picture now! (:

I am new ... but I follow the links and I don't see the new BOINC v5.22 anywhere .... what am I missing?

You guys need to write a client for the XBox 360 !! Three processors. Just think of the idle CPU time there! (:

It has been posted elsewhere, but thanks for pointing it out. And welcome! Glad you took action to help Rosetta.

Thanks. I am glad to be here. I love these projects. I hate to think of all the idle CPU time out there. I was with SETI at home and then United Devices for several years ... but I really like the way this BOINC thing works. I love ALL the options and controls ... Neat !!! Now may it actually point to a cure for something .... ! (:

Didn't see it posted on this site so wanted to let everyone know that it was on CNN now for at least a day ...

CNN has a recent article on this project here:
