There have been recent reports from WCG and f@h that they are entering a new phase of computational work which might be of value. I am therefore increasing the amount of work I am doing.

Indeed. I feel that we are moving out of the computational phase concerning covid 19. Vaccines are now having in vivo trials. I have heard that a simple 20 minute test is soon to be available. Also, more is known about how to treat people with the affliction. I am not saying that there is nothing left to be done, but the urgency of the number crunching seems to have abated.

Keeping all my machines on day and night does consume electricity, for which I have to pay. Also electricity does have an environmental impact.

Unless someone persuades me otherwise, I shall therefore between now and early August be winding things down a bit. Some devices will be switched off completely, while others might not run 168 hours a week.

It seems that things are finally working again. I'm now running my first android rosetta job for some time.

Indeed. My android phone is now doing 100% open pandemics work. It has been that way for a while.

But more recently rosetta work for my other computers has dried up.

I guess that we can celebrate the fact that we have got through all the rosetta stuff for the time being and hope that our work has been useful.

Are we running out of work?

If so, I might start switching my computers off at night.

I should also mention that my android is now working without incident on universe@home.

It seems to me that there is a problem with the rosetta server.

When I do try to connect I get these messages in my event log:

Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

You are not alone. I cannot connect with my smartphone but my non-android computers are working normally.

I'm now attempting to run Junior Halfroid design 5 jobs, but I am getting very long run times - often over 24 hours.

I have more memory on order - upgrade my laptop from 4 to 16 GB, and an SD card for my smartphone - and this might help a bit.

It was the partition that contained /var which filled up. I deleted the offending file without making a note of its name and reinstalled boinc, which has got things running again. At the moment one processor is idle and I have not worked out why. Perhaps it is just waiting for more work.

Junior halfroid is a cuckoo's egg

I've had a number of work units labelled 'junior halfroid ...'.

They look innocent enough to begin with, just like any other job. But when they get to the 90%+ complete, they seem to want more and more time. (Sounds like IT projects I used to work on.) Then this morning I found that a whole partition had been filled up with boinc/rosetta stuff.

I am now aborting any junior halfroid work as soon as I see it.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?
