Just in case you looked at WCG also due to my mentioning it earlier in this thread, as a "backup" project which applies Rosetta sw, I should point out that WCG is more "abusive" of donor's resources, e.g. right now my WinXP BOINC is uploading a 2.3MByte results file, which -just being curious- I copied aside and compressed it to 524KByte with RAR. WCG also sends the same WU to 4 different people afaik, another practice which looks wasteful to me. No I've been there for several months. The size isn't really an issue for me but I don't have 30 machines trying to connect either. |

On the blackmail issue - it was pointed out that the owners of the 3 largest computer pharms/farms on the FadBeens team have had tremendous problems with the No Work issue. You'll note that NightOwl is trying to find the source of the errors. Others have had to switch to other projects to keep their systems doing something useful. Given that they like to focus on one project at a time, and don't want their pharms/farms idling - then their issues (No Work, excessive bandwidth usage) need to be cured for them to crunch for this project. That's not blackmail. It's a simple statement of fact. On Distributed Folding and FaD (probably present in the other 2 projects I've taken part in as well), I've seen a number of people offering large collections of computers if changes were made to the client that made it easy/easier to run on those large collections of computers. (20, 100, more system in some cases.) If Rosetta wants the large pharmers/farmers, then the stumbling blocks of No Work and excessive bandwidth usage need to be rectified. And if the issues being brought up have been discussed before - feel free to point them to the previous discussions so they can ask for the current progress on finding the solution - in the appropriate spot. Look at it as an offer of a few large pharms/farms if the problems are eliminated. And opening up the project to more large pharms in the future when the project gets even larger. |

Snake Doctor I offered to help find a solution if he ever came to the UK. Where was the violent intent ? I`ll have a lawyer take a look if you so wish, there are a few around ! So what you said was" hhhh David Stites AKA Lord of the Rings So you were proposing what to do what with this fellow .... a Chess match... a foot race? ... golf? What exactly? While over there these words may not constitute an offer of combat they do carry that meaning here. As to singling you out, you were the first to cross the threshold of a threat, no matter how you vieled it. Nobody, least of all me, is prejudiced against you, or picking on you in particular. But you yourself have said that you tend to be, lets say, more direct. All I or anyone else has suggested to you is to try to be a little less short fused in your approach others. I am presuming that you are adult enough to just blow these guys off. You are obviously the leader of a team of crunchers, put your leadership role ahead of your temper, and just ignore them. I would agree with your comment that you have on occasion been the target of some abusive commentary from others. I am not one of them. I have tried to be civil with you and make the suggestion that there is no need for all the name calling and personal snipping. In particular there was no need to slam the project folks or the moderators. As to your opinion that I have ambushed you in some way, these are public forums, I have as much right to speak here as you. If I think your tone is abusive I will try to point that out. I have done it with others, and I will continue to do so. I think if you re-read a few of my posts with an open mind you will find that my comments are first of all not all targeted at you, but more important they are not laced with personal attacks against you. I have made suggestions for a more civil tone. That is all. If you choose to take that as an attack, that is your choice, not my intent I am not alone in my opinion, a point which I tried to make in my last post. It takes two to tango, and clearly your attackers should back off too. But not one of them threatened you or used language that implied a physical threat. As to rules of public discourse, you seem to have a good handle on what pushes your buttons. I would suggest that if someone might upset you by saying it to you, then you should avoid saying it to someone else. As for me I do not plan to continue this dance. Regards Phil |

Snake Doc , I have not become upset at any point, quite the reverse I seem to have upset you and others. Whilst you may feel there is no venom in your post`s, I see it, others see it. Now you again are dragging this all up so you can have the last word presumably because of self importance, I can see no other reasons. I have attempted on numerous accounts to stop this. I`ll say again.... I reiterate..as far as I`m concerned the issues were discussed with David Kim to a satisfactory outcome. If you would like to post something please post a link to the forum rules you are quoted as stating existed as I asked previously. Other than that put it to bed will you please ? Not all Czech`s bounce but I`d like to try with Barbar ;-) Make no mistake This IS the TEDDIES TEAM. |

While I do not care about last words, I do feel some obligation to you to answer your question. So here it is. Actually, It does not require posting a link. As you are replying to this post, just look at the text to the left of the text box. it says - "Don't use obscene language or images, and don't threaten other participants; otherwise we may delete your messages." While not a long or expansive set of rules, that are widely available and fairly clear. Regards Phil We Must look for intelligent life on other planets as, it is becoming increasingly apparent we will not find any on our own. |

I agree that previous discussions have addressed both of these issues, with the resolution that the Rosetta folks are aware of and are working on addressing these issues (among others). :) Regards, Bob P. |

If Rosetta wants the large pharmers/farmers, then the stumbling blocks of No Work and excessive bandwidth usage need to be rectified. Unfortunately, many DC projects are not considerate enough of donors' resources. I mentioned today that WCG doesn't even compress the big plaintext files of results (2.3MB text file was compressible to 500KB, if they bothered). Just right now, SIMAP has flooded one of my BOINC computers with 50+ jobs for a total download size of 65MBytes (just 1 PC with 15% BOINC resource share, in just an hour). No wonder that most people stick with techie-type projects, as they are using donor bandwidth resources sparingly... Dimitris, What have you set your cache to (the connect to every x days in your general settings)? I would suspect that you have this set to a figure greater than 1 day. If so, reduce this setting, and the next time your PC requests work from SIMAP it will request less. |

It's my usual 0.1 day. I know about that, but just checked with their site (just in case) and it's the correct setting 0.1 (general defaults "propagate"). And looking at my "Messages" tab, my BOINC requested 17280 seconds of new work and it got about 50 jobs of est. 45min each... I've set SIMAP to "no new work", until I/they find out what happened. Paul, I think this is one of the first things I said, who is official ? Just to clarify for the LAST time... A) I did not write that FAQ, I copied it from an obscure and heavily modified thread into a new place, and properly credited the person who DID write it (hugothehermit) B) I do not recommend moving BOINC around, have never tried it, and would recommend it as a last resort only C) I am not a moderator or official at this time, under any id, although I was when I created that thread. And when I did so, my tag said "forum moderator"; when I had them remove it, it removed it from prior postings as well. D) BOINC isn't designed and will not work well as a single-project system. You may want to run only one project, but if so, then you will simply have to accept that you will have idle CPUs at times. Just pick something, anything, give it a .01% share, and when Rosetta doesn't have work, _they_ suffer, but at least you're doing _something_. E) Adding additional forums is possible but don't look to WCG or CPDN for examples, they had something in place _before_ BOINC and BOINC is 'shoehorned in'. Look instead at Einstein, where the BOINC code has actually been improved/expanded. This is a very old topic. I'm sorry, I'm not in a position where I give a shit what's said about me right now, but it's not fair to hugo that I get credit for his hard work. Goodbye all, and good luck. |

Angus said- ....A standard forum package IS distributed as part of the BOINC server package. Perhaps YOU should go browse through the open source code before you tell me I'm wrong. I did NOT mention anything about Boinc not distributing, you did. I mentioned USE! Windoze also distribute a standard browser with their software........a lot do not use it... ....If some of the more mature or well-funded and well-staffed projects that existed before BOINC came along want to expend their efforts to make a new forum, that's fine. PHP BB which is very widely used is FREE, and there are plenty of others...and WCG did not exist before Boinc, Boinc started early 2003 and WCG late 2004! |

Angus said- The BOINC package that is distributed includes a forum. That makes it the 'standard'. Anything else is a deviation from that standard. See this message by Paul D. Buck in the other forum thread for more details. ....If some of the more mature or well-funded and well-staffed projects that existed before BOINC came along want to expend their efforts to make a new forum, that's fine. The standard BOINC forum is tightly integrated with the database, eliminating need for separate sign-ons, easy stats retreival, and so forth. A third party forum is not going to be able to do that. Things like phpBB are also massive targets for hackers, adding an extra concern and maintenance load to small projects. Again, see this message by Paul D. Buck in the other forum thread for more details. <edited to add links to Paul's more complete post in the forum topics thread, which I had not seen yet> Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. To make it short: Whether it is standard forum or not, I don't like it. So please improve this one as suggested or take another one. And I have no problems to register twice.... And I'm wondering why some people here try to speak for the staff but not from the staff.... Teddies.... |

To make it short: Whether it is standard forum or not, I don't like it. Well, I like it, and would like it to stay the same, and not have the project scientists waste their time remaking it to something you want. And you don't get to demand that it gets changed..... Maybe you should take your campaign to have the forums re-written to the BOINC forum, or for that matter to ALL the BOINC project forums. See how far you can get. Oh I see of course it`s Angus from FreeDC... The one who complained loudly and bitterly about Bill and demanded he be changed, well why didn`t you say...I think before we asked that Rosetta run everything through you first...blimey aint they done it mate...shame... Now David Kim has asked for suggestions as he doesn`t appear satisfied with the forum...so that`s him....er us....Nah sorry mate no Angus in the list..what a cow ! Not all Czech`s bounce but I`d like to try with Barbar ;-) Make no mistake This IS the TEDDIES TEAM. |

I'm glad You're not from the staff Angus. So please let the staff decide what to do.... Would that be the 14 "Teddies" or the other 36,800+ customers? Here's an idea - why don't YOU contribute by writing a better forum, fully integrated with the BOINC software, and submit it to the dev mailing list for consideration as the standard? If your idea has the merit, it should be considered, yes? Do you need the links to the open-source repository? Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. I also don't like the BOINC-forum software very much, but it's an integral part of the whole system. Would the project rather have 40.000 (in a few months it could be 200.000) users register TWICE, once in R@H and once in the forum sw? As if each one of doesn't have enough passwords / PINs /etc to remember! (and looking at this from user's perspective: multiply times 3-10 different projects one may have joined). The best bet for the future would be to offer a "bridge" between the BOINC server software and one of the fine BBS sw like phpBB or vBulletin, so that account data is shared between them. Anyway, I think these issues are best discussed with BOINC developers. Personally, I wouldn't want Rosetta team losing time over technical issues which aren't directly related with the science part of the project. My 2cents. PS: I see in Morphy's sig, that some of you fellows have created an independent, user-supported phpBB forum for Rosetta. Maybe this is a reasonable compromise for the heavy R crunchers to hang out there, until BOINC's forum sw gets better. Often these "unofficial" user-supported resources can be much more lively than the official ones. Best UFO Resources Wikipedia R@h How-To: Join Distributed Computing projects that benefit humanity |
