Are there any known issues with either Skype or Messenger? Both applications have run ok for the last day. When BOINC running Rosetta was installed, both the above programmes have shut down 4 times in the last 10 minutes.

It looks like the "error in 30 secs" WUs... I haven't heard anything about the possible involvement of Skype and messenger causing WUs to fail.

If it is the 30sec WUs, then it's a known error... but I noticed that some of your WUs are batch 202, and I didn't think there were problems with 202.

I don't run Messenger, but I run Skype, and I haven't had any problems of what you describe.

While I run Skype on a Mac, I have Messenger on the PC - no problems either place...

Just to make sure - you DO have "leave applications in memory when preempted" set to "yes"? If not, you'll get this kind of failure, randomly.

EDIT:: Are you sure that link is correct? That host isn't under your name...

Skype will get upset if any other process is taking too much network bandwidth. If you are lucky it just stutters, but it can fall over.

If Skype failed while you were uploading I would not be surprised, as upload bandwidth is usually tighter than down. If so the issue is the upload not the preceding Rosetta error message. The fix would be to set a limit to the upload speed in your BOINC prefs. Limit BOINC to maybe 1/10th or 1/3rd of your uplink bandwidth is, or even less. Rosetta won't mind if it takes several minutes to upload.

Remember to accout for 'contention' in this. If you have 256k uplink, on a 25 to 1 contention ratio, then your guranteed uplink speed is only 10k, and youd set from 1k to 3k as the limit. Usually you get a lot more, but not always. ADSL is usually on a contention ratio of 25:1, 10:1 or 5:1. SDSL is usually 1:1 and a lot more expensive! If you don't know, ask your ADSL provider for the contention ratio.

However, I am not aware of messaenger doing this, so I may be totally off track here and the preferences setting might not cure the problem. It won't do any harm tho, and it will head off that annoying stuttering!
