Message 97090 - Posted: 1 Jun 2020, 0:41:10 UTC - in response to Message 97082.

[snip]

The building I'm in has 5 powerful air conditioners, not under my control. My computer room also has a window air conditioner, under my control. I keep that one turned on for the full year, using a setting that keeps its fan running at all times but only cools when needed.

Why keep the fan running if it's not needed to cool the room? The unit I just bought does that for no reason. When the room has reached temperature, turn off and be quiet! I've since modified it to make it more sensible.

I'm more sensitive to CHANGES in noise than to steady unchanging noise. My computer room is also my bedroom.

As in my last previous entry, I still feel that the Boinc software gents
need to update Boinc, ASAP, because of Baker Lab's importance. Yes, I'm griping, but -- as a retired hardware engineer (mini-computers, to date myself) -- I know how fast the gents in the corner office want Eco's/Rev's generated. Out the door. . .

So, I still can get antsie, at times, when an important Boinc rev. is concerned.

Again, hat-tips to you/us all. Let's get a vaccine!

BOINC is now offering some new versions with an updated ca-bundle.crt - only for testing so far, but with plans to release the new versions if the tests don't uncover any new problems.

Download BOINC client software

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Email from the boinc_dev mailing list is not working yet, but the web version is working and so is email to the list.

I used to be a hardware engineer also, with heavy use of mini-computers but not working to design them.

I'm about to install one of the new test versions.

I like the relief when a noise stops. And I cannot sleep with any noise whatsoever. I actually boarded up and very insulated my bedroom window so I cannot hear a dog barking, a car passing etc.

Thanks for the update. I have installed it on my machines.

My newer/faster computer which does NOTHING but Rosetta ran out of work for about a day with uploads/downloads pending. Somehow it was resolved without action on my part.

My other computer which is shared between me and Rosetta still has uploads and downloads supposedly in flight. I got a notice suggesting to remove the project and re-add it with the corrected (HTTPS) URL. I removed it, but now attach fails.

Install the new 7.16.7 version of BOINC, even though it is still marked as for testing,

It includes a fix for this problem, and the only other change since 7.16.5 is the version number.

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Scroll down if you also want the new Android version, also marked as for testing.

Hmmmm, OK. Any idea why it recovered on the one without doing that?

I finally connected the old computer to BOINCstatBAM!, but I couldn't re-attach the project through there, either. But here's where it gets really weird: I COULD then attach the project through BOINC Manager. BUT: Once again, things are just "downloading," never downloaded. Maybe I'll try 7.16.7 tomorrow.

again, for the people who for some reason do not want to re-install BOINC yet:

the file "ca-bundle.crt" contained in this link https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21AAVyh7jontFKASg&id=B0BF9B80B38343C5%21665&cid=B0BF9B80B38343C5 can be used for replacing the existing file in the BOINC folder (usually in C:/Program files/BOINC).
This is a very simple procedure, it's done within half a minute, and the BOINC manager does not even be closed when doing the file replacement.
It worked well on all of my computers.

My phone has not been updated (yet), and it can contact Rosetta, but not LHC. I assume a server end fix has also been implemented at Rosetta but not LHC.

My Boincstats statistics have been out of date for a while, I assume they couldn't connect to Rosetta either. Their stats for Rosetta are now correct, but LHC is still out of date. I assume they haven't done an update at LHC or Boincstats.

I could not install the Android one on my phone, it said "App not installed, the package appears to be corrupt".

I had to uninstall the (newer) existing version first. It was running 7.16.5 already, so it was rejecting the downgrade, but not stating that!

I wonder why they've given it a lower version number than a previous one?

And it refuses to attach to LHC now (all other projects attached fine). I tried from the project list, and also manually entering the URL https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/
I can get to LHC fine with my Windows 10 PC.
My older phone (which did the upgrade ok as it had the ancient version) still has LHC in its project list, but when I try to update the project, it defers me for 24 hours. Something not quite right there.

I wonder why Boinc didn't just include it in the Project files and force the download to every user instead of coming out with a whole new version?
The Developers are smart enough to figure out where on our system the current file is and replace it, sure some systems are soooo locked down it wouldn't work but a clear error message would address that and give enough info to get it fixed.

Are you sure the phone previously running 7.16.5 was running the Android operating system? If it was previously running 7.16.5, it had to be running some other operating system for which that version exists, and is therefore unable to install any software meant for Android.

One possible exception - you might be involved in BOINC alpha testing, and therefore have access to versions so new I haven't read about them yet. However, if that were true, you would already know enough about BOINC that you wouldn't be asking me much of anything.

As for LHC, I haven't participated in that project, so you'll need someone else to answer,

Probably because they didn't think they needed the ability to do that, and therefore didn't give previous versions the capability to allow doing that.

I went there for Android and the latest beta version is showing 7.16.3 from Oct 2019
I grabbed it but I'm not sure the new certificate has been applied yet - files not yet uploading

Blimey, minimum spare storage space default is 215Gb - I thought it read 215Mb at first. A setting of 1 = 1.1Gb
A WCG task came down, but 2 Rosetta tasks still waiting to upload.
Not sure if that's due to continuing pressure on the server or the security cert still not being right.
I finally got 1 task to upload on my PC, getting past the server timeout

Yes, Android 7.0, nothing special, not even rooted. That version I believe is a Beta, somebody mentioned you can get it from "APKPure" which I've never heard of. Not sure where I got it from.

I might have ticked or signed up to something. But I don't think I'm signed up for anything like that.

Rosettas do, LHCs don't. But Rosetta did something at their end since people who've not changed anything locally are getting through.

The Android Boinc has some weird defaults. The first thing I did was to go through all the preferences. Like I don't want to be thanked for participating every time I turn on the screen. And I don't want it to stop computing when I turn on the screen or unplug the charger. It can run Boinc for 10 hours on battery (it's not one of those slim Iphones that makes a 30 minute call and goes flat!), I just set it to leave 30% battery free.

My Android phone still can't upload results. Someone posted a workaround for PC, download first and then upload, I tried, it doesn't apply to Android. Can't download new WU either. Anyone has any solution? Does the administator know about this?

Working seamlessly for me, even before changing anything at my end. What version of Boinc is on your Android device? Are you attached to Rosetta with http or https?
