You also said very new hardware which is a complete lie.Depends on your point of view. I call my car new because it has a reg plate from this century. Some people need one from this year to impress the neighbours. It’s nothing to do with point of view, it’s nothing to do with mine’s bigger than yours, it’s all to do with the deliberate misrepresentation of a technical issue - end of. |

It’s nothing to do with point of view, it’s nothing to do with mine’s bigger than yours, it’s all to do with the deliberate misrepresentation of a technical issueIf you really believe that you're not very bright (but assuming you're Welsh that's not actually your fault). It's to do with how new you consider a new or old computer to be. Which is everything to do with mine's bigger than yours. Your viewpoint that most Boinc users have fancy new computers is false, in fact we're quite likely to collect old stuff more than say someone who plays games. - end of..... your keyboard? This sentence is incomplete. You'll be saying "bovvered!" next. You're Lauren aren't you? https://youtu.be/zV1zK8zRCPo |

dumb ass server booted me awhile back and I didn't notice. no idea what errors I generated this time. maybe it is time to leave and go search for a real project that doesn't have this kind of stupidiness involved and has no interest in its volunteers. I'm going on vacation soon, so maybe when I come back I just remove this project. I can't be monitoring this project all the time to see if I am removed from python or not, I have a life that does not involve me sitting here watching every night to see if I am removed or not. This project has gone so far downhill I think they just keep it around for the funding. There is obviously no interest in this project from the team. |

dumb ass server booted me awhile back and I didn't notice.I'm gonna try WCG when they get their act together. It seems the problems are them moving to completely different software on completely different servers and trying to transfer all the data and settings across. Having read up on "IBM Mainframes", I'm gonna blame IBM: https://dfarq.homeip.net/what-does-ibm-do-now/ "Migrating off an IBM mainframe is like building a new airplane while you’re flying on another one and then trying to change planes in flight." P.S. I love the domain name in that link and how you would pronounce it. |

I don't expect WCG to come up alive very soon. I believe that the Krembil Research Insttitute has bitten more than it can chew, Tullio rosetta python completed and validated. Six Rosetta 4.20 tasks running OK. |

Just not enough of the right kind, or too much else for them to do. |

The whole system is offline, what else are they doing, making coffee?I don't expect WCG to come up alive very soon. I believe that the Krembil Research Insttitute has bitten more than it can chew,It's a multi billion dollar organisation, how can they not afford some IT guys? Anyway, they have the money to hire some short term. As for right kind, WTF? that would be like my garage saying "Sorry mate we only got the mechanics that do brakes today, we can't fit a clutch, they don't know how to do that". |

I believe that the Krembil Research Insttitute has bitten more than it can chew,It's a multi billion dollar organisation, how can they not afford some IT guys? They are engaged in cancer research. As for the right kind, few if any of the IT people know all of the 2000 or so computer languages. |

Why would they need to know a computer language? They're just copying from one server to another! |

Research by IT guys? So Krembil bought something they don't have the manpower to make work. FFS. If they were copying to the same model of server, with the same operating system, it would probably be simple. They probably aren't, so they'll need to make a lot of changes in the programs that run on the server. That requires knowledge of whatever computer languages those programs are written in. |

If they were copying to the same model of server, with the same operating system, it would probably be simple. When I copy my photos and Photoshop to a new computer with Windows instead of Linux, I don't have to know how it's written. All they need to do is configure stuff. At the moment they can't even get the web server to work. What IT guy can't get a web server running?! |

All they need to do is configure stuff. For you, the program (Photoshop) already has a version available for your new operating system. The server programs aren't popular enough to make versions available for every operating system. I've worked with moving programs from one operating system to another. It was NOT easy for the more complex programs. I worked as an IT person for years. I would still be quite slow at learning enough about web servers to get one working |

[snip]Boinc is already written for all server OS they might use. If their own stuff needs to be rewritten, why not just change the OS? You don't rewrite loads of research programs instead of just having another OS. They must have countless servers there. Anyway, what they're saying isn't working is just the interface between the server and us, not the research. It's just a webserver! |

Doesn't Linux run on any server? If they were using proprietary shit from IBM, there's no wonder they can't get it working. IBM does that on purpose to stop you from leaving.[snip]Boinc is already written for all server OS they might use. If their own stuff needs to be rewritten, why not just change the OS? If they were using proprietary shit from IBM, there's no wonder they can't get it working. IBM does that on purpose to stop you from leaving. Only if someone has written the changes to Linux to make it able to run in those servers. It's not automatically able to run on any server you can find. Since the previous server or servers were owned and run by IBM, I'd expect them to use an IBM operating system. |

[snip]I can take a Dell server and install Windows or Linux on it, just like a desktop. What's magical about IBM servers? |

What's magical about IBM servers? Nothing magical. Just different hardware, possibly with a different instruction set. The Dell server and most of the other low-end servers use Intel or AMD CPU chips and therefore have nearly the same instructions sets. That means that if the compilers know what CPU chip is used, they can automatically make most of the adjustments needed. Knowing how to use one operating system does not make it easy to use another one instead. I was always rather slow at switching from one operating system to another one I had not learned about yet. I've lost count of how many operating systems I've used, probably about six, learned one at a time. |

Nothing magical. Just different hardware, possibly with a different instruction set.Completely different instruction set. I'm pretty sure WCG was actually running on an IBM mainframe. They've had to move it over to x86 based systems. Not a trivial task. Grant Darwin NT |
