1. I'm writing this after spending an hour trying to find a link via MS to someone at MS. 2. My beef, however small (but probably relevant to OS problems in general). . I'm trying to play hi def videos from MS's site (see below). Most videos don't play because of DRM software they have (see a company called nine systems). . btw, I may have watched the demo months ago, but seriously, the file is a demo. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx Anyway, any info would be appreciated. -Ethan |

well you know ethan, i went there clicked on the trailer for "alexander" and of course it downloaded and played right away. doncha just hate that!? my system is a dual opteron with a gig of memory, win xp pro. quicktime is my default media player (i changed to it as it will buffer and stream audio files quicker than anything) however this sample wanted to use realplayer instead. it might have to do with the internal battle raging between the 2 for dominance, but that's a different story. i don't have win media player installed <insert gasping, horror sound here> did you unzip it? what error message do you get? it won't work in quicktime, do you have win media 9 installed? i know that didn't help too much, so please go to my team's site XPC post under general technical discussion and i'm sure one of the genius's there can help you more than i can. |

No, Microsoft doesn't. Using Windows IE, have you been to Windows Update lately? Windows DRM is a requirement for viewing some of the clips and it is availble at the update site. I don't have a state of the art computer like VaVega, but three clips played well using Windows Media Player 10 on my four year old Dell Dimension 8200 with an Intel P4 at 2.0 GHz (while running Rosetta). One of the clips I viewed was Ray. Advice: Get Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB902344) Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB902344) |

I reread the page. Sample clips marked with an asterisk (*) are copy protected and may require you to update your digital rights management software if you do not have the latest version. The update will take less than one minute to download and install on most systems and happens automatically through Windows Media Player when the file is played. |

Thanks for the suggestions all. . I did have one optional update, we'll try that out after work. Videos I hadn't watched before played fine, it was ones I had watched over the summer, and had downloaded again, that didn't want to play (and it took me to the drm company's website). |

Ethan, rather than creating a new thread and moving everything to it, as the thread originator, you can edit the thread's title... That also avoids confusing the heck out of people who try to reply to your posting talking about the new thread and get the edited posting to reply to instead! :-P |

Ethan, rather than creating a new thread and moving everything to it, as the thread originator, you can edit the thread's title... Why do things the easy way :) I only saw the option to lock or delete the thread. . looking again, I can see where I'd change the subject by editing the original post. |

Whelp. . I downloaded all available updates in the optional section that had to do with WMP. I tried the file, and WMP says "You must acquire a digital license to play this file, would you like to do this". . hitting yes and another window pops up that says "your license to play this file has expired" with a link to "www.ninesystems.com". This is to watch a movie preview (Robots). . I could understand if it was the actual movie or something. *shrug* . . it seems that's how the thing is intended. . hopefully I don't have a rootkit a la sony :) -E |

Thank you for being more specific. Although I watched Ray again, I cannot view Robots. Security upgrade required |

I could understand if it was the actual movie or something. *shudder* I have one of those Sony infected CD's... luckily, my daughter's laptop is an iBook, so it wasn't infected. I need to remember to take that thing back to the store this week... If you have QuickTime, see if the trailer is available at Apple's site. Or heck, download QT anyway. Even on Windows, it's a lot better than Media Player. |
