Downloaded and completed some tasks. I hope you will continue to send tasks to Android devices :P (and it would be good to have some work also for x86 Android devices such as the ASUS ZenFone)

The 2 Android devices I built specifically for rosetta now sit idle. The server says new WUs are being generated but I'm not receiving any. Can someone explain?

Do we have a defined timeframe for how far in the future we're looking? This same reply was given back on the 29th of July to an inquiry I made. I would love to see Rosetta@Home running on my Android devices again because it seems to be one of the only projects where Android devices do a reasonable amount of work as it runs (at least if one goes by credits given)

For the time being, my three Android devices are working away at Skynet POGS and Universe@Home. I just really liked the fact that my two Samsung Galaxy S3's (running BOINC 24/7) plus an HTC One M8 (running BOINC approximately 4.5/7 days of the week) were able to match (more or less) the output of two cores on my 4770k, which had me looking into the purchase of a few ODroid C2's and XU4's. Sure, that's 8 ARM cores (running at whatever their stock speeds are) to match two Haswell cores (running at a stock 3.9GHz), but it's still enough to catch my attention and make me contemplate the purchase of additional devices.

Credit isn't the be-all end all for me (otherwise I'd just be running Collatz and PrimeGrid, instead of the mixmash of astrophysics/astronomy and biochemistry projects I focus on), but having your ARM CPU/SoC vs desktop CPU results compare somewhat favourably against desktop products is always a nice bonus. By such I'm meaning where running Android devices feels worthwhile in comparison (Rosetta@Home, where sure it may take 3-4x devices that are a few years old to match a desktop processor, but that sure beats out say Einstein@Home where my three phones on their best days put out a whopping 750 credit total - and my 4770k's IGP put out over ten times that. If you compare the 4770k with six cores (and Gravitational Waves WU's), that 15x more work done based upon credit. Ratio seems slightly more favourable if you use the same comparison I did for Rosetta@Home (8 ARM cores vs 2 Haswell cores) where it's only 5x the difference)

Still miss my Rosetta@Home work on the Android devices though.

Definitely. I upgraded from a 4-core Samsung S4 to an 8-core Samsung S6 earlier this month. Not a single Rosetta task has run on it yet. Not even one.

What I've been searching for and not finding in the conversation is evidence that the Android client is producing enough results even to be worth running in the first (or last) place. The entire optimization of Android devices is directly away from the unused-cycles model that created the opportunity of BOINC (and s@h before it). If they aren't getting a meaningful number of results from Android, then they shouldn't waste any resources supporting it (but I obviously have an axe to grind since the Mac client has been broken for a long time, and there are quite a number of Macs out there and I'm sure they could do useful work).

Now that I've composed this query, maybe I can figure out what key words to search for. I've also realized that "justify" and "justification" are key ideas of this comment, even though I didn't mention them here... So now let's see if this has been discussed before and if they have revealed anything in public about relative contributions of the various platforms?

Closest match I could find to my topic... So do you know if there are a significant number of results from Android that have been contributed to the project?

By the way, that reminds me of my own experiments with an Android tablet. I concluded that the tablet seemed to be harmed by the continuous processing, and I stopped running BOINC there. The tablet has never been the same since then, but it's still alive, if a bit sickly. I think I managed to finish two or three work units, but I think that was before I switched to Rosetta.

One of the admins said that android client is 11 times slower than cpu client.
I continue to think that cpu optimization (native 64 bit, SSEx/Avx, etc) is a better use of resources.


By the way, that reminds me of my own experiments with an Android tablet.

Astronomical boinc projects, for example, run very well on tablets/smartphones

Interesting question, that I don't know the answer to and can't recall being discussed. But if credits reflect usefulness I've always been surprised by how much they return - about 80% per task of my laptop, when I'd have assumed 10-20%. That on a Samsung S4. With my current S6 I've never had a task arrive so I don't know how it performs.

For your current purposes, the fact there hasn't been a single Android task for 3-4 months might be seen as a tacit acknowledgement of your point. No resources are currently being "wasted" or otherwise on Android.

Yeph! But, what cost? 700 euros/dollars? 800?
With this money i can buy a pc (with Intel I5/Amd A10) that literally outclasses S7 phone.

No, I mean that I don't buy a Galaxy S7 just to run Rosetta, but if I have one I could do the same results of a Windows PC.

It is true that the android devices are typically 10x slower than the std desktop cpus and there is a high rate of error likely due to memory issues and preemption. But I hope things will improve in the future. We already have over 200,000 registered android devices which is almost greater than linux and mac combined. We definitely plan on running more android jobs in the near future.
