All the news / updates about the projects, stuff that you wish you'd see on twitter, etc can be found in the news section here of the Institute for Protein Design. Sorry Timo I can't agree with you as all the material evidence points in another direction. We "the crunchers" are doing the "grunt work" and not any science. Basically, you're the labourer on a building site, clearing the rubble, humping bricks or sweeping up. Soon as you've done that, they'll use their own computing clusters. Believe me when I say scientists have NOT embraced or have any confidence in BOINC other than the "grunt" work. When it comes down to the real stuff they'll run it on their own clusters in which they have confidence and control. Don't despair, you doing the "grunt work" saves them a lot of money and by keeping you away from the science they get full credit when publishing, which is what most scientists are interested in being the "ego" driven gang that most are. BOINC looks likely to go down in history as a huge failure and for the most part not because of the crunchers but because of the scientists. I'm guessing most of you won't be able to swallow this so let the flaming begin. |

OK...So I checked out your link to IPD...Randomly selected 2 articles...Saw a few researchers happy with the results they have found...Not one mention of your contribution, my contribution, or the tens of thousands of other contributors by way of their computer. |

The very first / top article on the IPD news page (ie. the newest) just for random example, does indeed have an explicate acknowledgement of the contributions of R@H volunteers: The new proteins are designed with the help of volunteers around the world participating in the Rosetta@Home distributed computing project. |

OK, I'll bite. Cite one article where a researcher in the BakerLab published results and did not cite R@h as a critical resource in their research. They do have a cluster of machines, and therefore should use it for something. I'd guess some of what they use it for is testing code that may not be ready to send to 10s of thousands of public heterogeneous runtime environments. Some of what they run there may not be directly related to the research they have told R@h participants they will use the compute resource for. But please, cite one shred of evidence that they select specific things to run on the cluster so they can "get full credit when publishing". Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

I'm more agree with BettingSlip than with Timo or ModSense. The lack of communication is embarassing: see, for example, all discussions about server update or code optimization. Do a comparison: Seti@Home Beta forum and Ralph@Home forum. In the first, admins are VERY present and interact with volunteers to do a good debug, in Ralph.... :-( |

I agree that the baker-lab is a little under-staffed, if anything. Are you kidding? BakerLab is one of the bigger team in boinc's world. The large part of projects has two or three admins/developers.... |

I agree IPD has relevant information that does mention R@H as a driver for science. Also I see thay IPD has pretty nice design as well as pictures in articles, why not to use the artist to do some little job for us. I'm fanatic myself but in order to engage more people in computing we need to have some "action" around the project. Have you ever thought why stupid farming games are so popular in social networks? Why we can't use some basic ideas within a project to make illusion of interaction. There are still a lot of idle computing power, all methods are good. |

I agree that the baker-lab is a little under-staffed, if anything. Most of those folks are researchers not admins. I believe they are the people DEK is referring to when, after a bad batch of tasks has come though upsetting the commentariat, he writes "I will speak to the person who submitted those tasks" (cue Jaws theme music). It's the admin/researcher ratio that's relevant and I share Timo's impression that admin staff is stretched a bit, especially considering the amount and the variety of work the lab conducts. edited to add: It should be someone's assigned task to take the relevant items from the IPD's news feed and post them in the news forum here (which I believe is automatically added to rosetta@home's front page). |

I agree that the baker-lab is a little under-staffed, if anything. IMO, I think that staffing resources, their skill sets and project management activities are below what I would expect from a project as big and as important as Rosetta. The Rosetta project is entrusted with the computing cycles donated by <many> people and can therefore really spend those resources any way they want. That is perfectly fine with me and my donation will continue. Those who have a problem with it can move their compute cycles to another project. IMO, not a big deal. It is unclear from the outside what the staffing level and skill sets are since much of that effort is invisible. Some simple, low cost things that Rosetta could implement and likely make a difference come to mind from other projects I participate in. 1. Post NEWS on the ROSETTA NOTICES feed that goes to all crunchers rather than just on the Rosetta FORUM. The current NOTICES just tell of a new Rosetta version that does not affect the cruncher. Actively push news out to the crunchers. You know .... that BOINC notification that pops up on each machine ... 8-) There is more to Rosetta than "version N+1" is available which has a higher version number. How many knew that October 6, 2015 was "officially" the 10th anniversary of Rosetta project release (according to Wikipedia)? 2. Offer a couple of Graduate level Independent Studies project courses to members of the UoWash computer science or business schools to upgrade the Ralph plumbing to the 21st century and then migrate Rosetta. There is likely a competent Computer Science post-grad who would even oversee the project work. 3. PrimeGrid and several others hold a "crunch off" just for fun/entertainment when they total the work started/completed and post a list of top contributors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta@home Development history and branches More than seven years after Rosetta's first appearance, the Rosetta@home project was released (i.e. announced as no longer beta) on October 6, 2005 |

Any update on the badges? No news about badges. No news about server update/upgrade. No news about code optimizations (sse/avx). No news about gpu (it's a dream). |

We plan on upgrading the hardware and software sometime this summer to coincide with a new systems administrator who will be engineering our new filesystem and backend. |

Are the badge icons not showing? I see them. We are running the badge_assign.php script each day to update badge assignments. |
