Does anyone know of a way to estimate your RAC/PPD for a particular processor based upon the Dhrystone and Whetstone figures in the CPU benchmark?

This would make choosing a new processor and overclock level much easier.

Ex: 3703 whestone per cpu x 4cpu cores / certain variable = 2,000 ppd

Unfortunately the whetstone/dhrystone benchmark is too simplistic to give much of an indication of performance. I can say with some confidence that the size of L2/L3 cache per core makes a very big difference on Rosetta.

If it's purely for crunching then I would suggest an overclocked i5-2500k would be difficult to beat if that's within your price range, and for a smaller budget I've found the PhenomII 545 or 555 can be an absolute bargain if you can re-enable one or two of the de-activated cores successfully. I've had three, one of which I could activate two cores on (i.e. to give a quad) and the other two are both perfectly good triple-core CPUs. It took a bit of testing to make sure there weren't any issues with the re-activated cores but after 24hrs of testing with the Blend test on Prime95 they proved to be completely stable and have been running for between a few months and a few years without any issues now.

If it is purely for crunching then you can save cost and electricity by running from a USB flash drive - see the diskless thread that's currently active...
