Hi all, I am following your Intel core i7 thread. I am interested in assembling a box with i7 860 and Win 7 prof to replace my q6600 box which I just shipped to my granddaughter. I think i7 860 is the cheapest for my planned project. I have read Anandtech good review on this chip. I will run R@H in it. I hope you have no more problem running R@H.

I turned off my 5computers when I went on vacation. When I return today, I can not upload work. Need work units to run computers.

My core I7 with 3gigs of ram and up to date vista. Running 24/7 365 days a year. Did 920,000 points from jan 26 2009 through december 5 2009.
Rosseta was the only project on the computer the entire time.

Hi bruce:)
I just bought all parts today for my new built: cpu=i7 860, mb=msi p55-gd65 intel 1156, ram=kingston 4gb 1600mhz dual hyperx, hsf=zalman cnps10x qiet cpu cooler, psu=coolmax 700watx and video card= oem radeon 4650 ati ddr2 1gb.
This will keep me busy assembling it tommorow. I am very excited and nervous.
This for my Rosetta@home wu. Question: Do you think this will run as an 8 core processor while running rosetta? I hope it will, because I read from anandtech review that it can run as a virtual 8 core machine. I will reuse my old dual core box, dvd-rw and old hdds.Cost me $838. I am crossing my fingers. I am not that savvy. I always rely on forum information.
Need your comment please. Thanks a lot, joseps.

I don't have an i7 myself, but from my pentium4 hyperthreading days I remember it could be turned off/on in the BIOS. My guess is, that it will not be different for the i7

I do not have an i7 either, and am jealous!!, but yes it can be turned on and off in the bios. For a brand new machine I personally would leave it off, turning it on to make sure it works of course, but physically leave it off for the first several days. I like gently breaking in computers when they are brand new, in fact I load Boinc only after about 5 or 6 restarts and all the other stuff is loaded, anti-virus, malwarebytes, flash, adobe reader, java, etc, etc. Then I install Boinc and let her run. After a day or so I then enable the HT and let the machine get up to full speed. This is probably a way to careful way of doing it but it works for me.

Both Windows Vista and BOINC see the I7 as an 8 core machine. BOINC will run 8 R@H Work Units at a time and generally completes in 3.5 hours. I dont overclock and I use an I7 920.

The only things I did were to make sure BOINC was set to run 8 processors and that Hyperthreading was turned on. I also run only rossetta at home on this computer.

That's an error at the bakerlab end, but I don't think they're having any problems. Unfortunately it can take an hour or so to get work at first.

Attach the machine to a different project and see if it works, keep Rosetta attached but also chose a second project. If that project sends you work, you know everything else is fine and you should get Rosie work if Rosie is working fine.

Hi Mikey:)
Yes , I did just that. World Community Grid immidiately send lots of work and I know then that the machine is running 8 threads and 8 wu crunching. Rosetta starts downloading some work and both Projects are running 4 works each simultaneously. Then later only 6 works are running. I reboot and switch to Win 7 RC. Win 7 RC runs 8 threads and 8 work units consistently. I prefer running the machine on Win 7 RC. I already have the official Win7 Professional, but I will wait until the RC expire at end of May. Then I will install the official release Win 7. Thanks.

If you do some Google searching you find out how to extend the trial past May in 3 month increments.

If you Google well enough, you can find Win7 Ultimate for free.
I'm sticking it to the Man.

Does this mean your problem is solved? In that case, would you mind changing your signature? It is a bit misleading.

Hi transient:)
I am sorry if I mislead you. I have no more problem with my new i7 860, p55 gd65 box. The last effort I did is to edit the ram memory usage to 90% in the preference tab in the boinc manager. This allowed both vista ult and win 7 rc to run the i7 860 at 8 threads and 8 work units. I am quite happy.
When I save some money, I may play games by buying the ATI CrossfireX. But that's wishfull thinking right now.
