My name is John Cooney and I am a project lead at Intel. I wanted to share with the Rosetta@home community a project that we are about to launch called Progress Thru Processors. Intel is sponsoring Progress Thru Processors which is a Facebook application developed in association with GridRepublic and BOINC. Progress Thru Processors will feature Rosetta@home, Climateprediction.net and Africa@home (malariacontrol.net), but participants can add any BOINC project once the application is added to their profile. Intel has been a supporter of volunteer computing for many years, dating back to SETI@home. We felt that by combining the networking power of Facebook with the promise of volunteer computing we could attract large numbers of new participants many of whom may never have even heard about volunteer computing. Our plan is to launch a public beta version on Monday, but I would like to share early access to the application with people in this forum. We hope you'll enjoy it; please let us know what you think. http://apps.facebook.com/processors/new.php Thanks, John Cooney Intel Corporation |

Interesting. It will be instructive to watch the flops count over the next weeks and months. One idea that might be wise, given the following comment on the reviews page:
is to aim Linux users directly at boinc.berkeley.edu and inform them a Linux client for BOINC can be found there. Depending on the support provided by PTP for Mac OS, the same strategy may be necessary for those users. |

This is just a public beta meaning things still need work. There is a Linux work around and that is to {1} Go to GridRepublic and sign up. specify Linux as platform. Follow the instructions. {2} When done, go back to Facebook and add the app: http://apps.facebook.com/processors/new.php {3} In the first question on the registration page, check "No, I am a GridRepublic user", enter the email + password you used in step #1 above, and then follow the on-screen instructions.... Theres something weird about this program. I adjusted the program to the same settings as I had with boinc manager. I maintain a 5 day extra buffer of work for both einstein and rosetta. Shortly after install the program downloaded a ton of work on Einstein and NOTHING for rosettta. I am down to 2 tasks and the program is telling the scheduler that it does not need any more work for rosetta. As far as I know there is no debt issue with Einstein as there have been no problems on that project. So why is it holding a buffer of work for Einstein and not for my preferred program Rosetta? |

Grid republic is biased. Even when you add RAH it shows a box with a red symbol whereas Einstein has a green symbol. 8/6/2009 1:51:25 PM Einstein@Home Scheduler request completed: got 12 new tasks Total in my queue is now over 35 / Resource share allocated to Einstein 100 8/6/2009 1:51:36 PM rosetta@home Scheduler request completed: got 8 new tasks Total in my queue is 8 / Resource share allocated to RAH 200 I will keep the progress program going for a bit and see if the scheduling returns to normal. But I am done with Grid. |

Grid republic is biased. There are different colors for every project which is displayed by Progress Thru Processors. The Red for Rosetta@home, Orange for Climate Predication.net, and Purple for Africa@home (aka malariacontrol.net). The remaining projects not currently displayed by Progress Thru Processors are all the same color which is more of a blue-green on my screen. There is no intended bias behind this. from an email from grid the special color for rosetta indicates that it has been submitted to a security review, which einstein has not. (having said this, einstien has a large userbase and very long history of safe and reliable service) but then again, as I will point out, resource settings are 200 for RAH and 100 for Einstein. Why is it I have a TON of einstein and it keeps wanting to download einstein even though the queue is not empty for einstein. But for RAH it wants to empty the queue and then only give me 8 tasks? Something is not right. I left Grid, sorry guys but when your program does not follow my settings then I am done with it until you figure out why. And a security review for RAH? What's that all about? Age of Einstein vs age of Rosetta? Safe and reliable? what's that? |

From casual viewing, this looks somewhat like Intel's version of IBM's World Community Grid. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |
