... and next month, a "barf" from vommit perhaps. If the developers spent all their time working on this weeks choice of daft messaging protocols we wouldn't need them, there wouldn't be any real news, only that "fart" from "anus" is now supported.

OK, I get it, you're not a twitter fan. However, your opinion is irrelevant. You're forgetting that rosetta wants to have as many contributers as possible, and weather you like it or not, twitter is immensly popular, and hence a good way to reach potential users and keep up interest among existing users.

Setting up a twitter account takes about 30 seconds and posting a tweet with a link to the baker journal, or other news stories would take at most 20 sec. Twitter may or may not be a passing trend, but I think its safe to say it will be around for another 2 years or so, so I think it would be a worthwile investment of time.

If you're worried this will take to much time, I can volunteer to run the rosetta feed myself, with the rosetta crews blessing, of course. However, I think it would be better if one of them did it, as they are in a better posistion to keep people up to date.

Twitter doesn't necessarily have to be about what you had for breakfast, this would be no different from the updates given in this forum, only that it has the potential to reach another couple of million people.

My suggestion would be for you to start an 'unofficial' one then! If you feel strongly, don't let others get in your way, 'go for it'!!!!

Did you not read my post? I thinnk I made my case quite clearly why your personal contempt for twitter is not relevant. If you think it was unclear, perhaps you will understand if I break it down in point form?

What is relevent is not anyones opinion, but the following facts:

1. Rosetta@Home depends on having contributers; the more, the better

2. The more people are aware of rosetta@home, the higher the probability that one of them will join

3. There are many potential contributers on twitter, who can be made aware of rosetta@home through twitter, as well as existing users, who will be encouraged to get regular updates.

@mikey, Yes maybe I'll do that. If anyone is interested in helping me out in keeping it up to date, or promote it, pm me, and I'll give you the account name and password. gotta run to lectures now though.

Alright guys, Rosetta@Home is now up on twitter: http://twitter.com/Rosetta_at_Home

Comments and suggestions are welcome. If you have Twitter accounts of your own, please 'follow'. If you're active in other Boinc related communities, post them a link. These things tend to grow exponetially, so help me hype it up a bit, for the greater good :P

I would also appreciate if a few more of you contacted me and were willing to contribute directly with keeping up to date.

One thing you might want to consider is that this project, any project, may not be able to physically handle a HUGE influx of new users. It may require more hardware, hence more money. Seti has run into this several times over the years and it was not pretty when the fallout led to the revelation that they were just re-issuing the same units over and over and over and over, etc, etc etc!! You may want to PM a Project Admin to ensure they can handle the hoped for influx.

I would have thought they had some kind of safeguard to ensure that they don't send out more work than they can handle? I'm not really expecting millions of new users over night though anyway, but it will surely generate some attention.

I'm in the process of composing an email asking David Baker for his blessing. Who are these project admin you speak of?

Thank you for taking the time to make it happen.

The project has over 80,000 hosts now. So, if you push >1,000 new hosts per day (shown on the homepage) for a solid week, you're starting to make a bubble. But otherwise, the project can handle the load. 500 new hosts per day is common already, so even that would only be a minor change in the overall load.

If you have any doubts about facts as you prepare material, be sure to post questions here on the boards.

I've been reposting posts from science forum (mainly the Baker journal) and from the foldit! frontpage and blog. Is there any other source of rosetta news I should be covering?

~500 new host per day... and practically 0 TFlop increase per day... yields 0 progress.

Apparently alot of people try it, think it takes too long or can't "see" how they are helping and either quit Boinc or move onto another project. We have talked before about projects tooting their own horn but few really do. It can also be a pain sometimes to figure out where to go to see how what we are doing is actually helping. If you don't take the long term view, Boinc is not for you. Some projects are better than others.
