For those problems that do not map well to the architecture it is not necessarily true. It is like a comparison of a racing car to a dump truck... sure one is faster, but when you have to move a ton of dirt the other choice may be more appropriate and faster at getting the job done. I am sure that we are going to see more projects use the GPUs as time wends on ... but the wholesale replacement of the CPU computing with GPU computing won't take place... besides, even over at SaH where there are apps for both architectures many want to run tasks on both resources ... |

Like a GPU being a formula 1 racing car, even though it can very fast on a race track, it can't go off-road :P The CPU is slower, but it can go both off-road and on-road. If that makes sense. Its just amazing though, that ~90 of those GPUs would equal to the whole R@H computational power |

Continuing the racing car vs. dump truck analogy... Maybe the job involves both hauling heavy loads as well as getting small loads from point A to point B quickly? Maybe the work can be split into 2 parts: 1 part that is suited to GPU and 1 part that is suited to CPU. Or you can run Rosetta on the CPU and GPU Grid on the GPU and get the best of both worlds ... Just a different way to look at it ... |

Mod.sense probably will you tell some comments on cuda? Because here numerous people are want the cuda computing for not falling behind seti and einstein projects. So as one of top 5 boinc projects Rosetta likely have to state their future cuda involvement policy. |

So as one of top 5 boinc projects Rosetta likely have to state their future cuda involvement policy. Actually I believe that Dr. Baker has already done so. And at the moment another application development project is not in the cards as I recall the comment. This is not a race to see how many FLOPS Rosetta can do vs any other project, but an effort to find an answer to a science question ... and if CUDA does allow faster processing at SaH then if the capacity of the participants can exceed the capacity of the project to issue work will mean that some participants will start to look elsewhere for work to feed the hungry beasts ... :) Maybe they will come here ... |

You mean like these? It was a plot to cause your RAC to drop so the rest of us could pass you by. No not REALLY, but I wonder if youtube is the culprit? Have you been able to watch over youtube videos with your machine? I know you overclock and I was thinking of some incompatibility regarding timing issues. |

BUT it may also encourage people to GO to Seti in the first place just BECAUSE they have a CUDA app and most other projects do not. CUDA is hot right now, and with 9800GT video cards in the $100.00US range, it is a fairly cheap investment for a machine with capable hardware. And since the CUDA app can turn out work at the rates that they can, people will see their RAC's rise pretty fast. Meaning they feel that they are actively contributing at a faster rate too. Meaning HOPEFULLY they would stay here, if they had a CUDA app! |

Just checked Dr.Bakers comment and it is turning out an issue of algorithm. So at first place surely someone at Stanford also faced with same issue and figured out their own algorithm for better computing. So hopefully at Rosetta someone is also working on more "flexible" algorithm for mutual progress. Well more computing muscle means more genetic/DNA folding hence achieving more juicy science or future superior human body. :) 1 k.watt energy usage options: Present: (1-4 core 32-64 bit cpu) Present advantage: (64-240 core 256-800 bit gpu) |

@Mikey Better to go to GPU Grid where you would be doing like science. And why do you need to leave here? My rigs are doing GPU Grid on the various GPUs I have and the cores are working away at other projects like Rosetta... which will get a substantial boost as soon as I knock off ABC (hopefully in another 10 days or so) with me bumping up my contributions to try to push my Rosetta numbers near or over 400K ... Adding CUDA to a machine and adding a CUDA project does not mean you have to do less for your current favorite projects. You just will do additional work for other projects. Though I will admit that I too would like to see greater variety ... until that day ... |

@Mikey I tried doing GPU grid and it stopped my Boinc crunching, with one of the cpus. I am using verion 6.4.5 and i know there are newer version that address some of these issues, but I really want to crunch for Rosetta with my GPU. Einstein would be okay too but currently neither one supports video card crunching. I am back to what works for me, at least for now. I have problems downloading the mini-rosetta file, we had this discussion in the mini-rosetta 1.54 problems thread. It just will NOT download to any Windows machine of mine, although I JUST got it working on a Linux machine!!! |
