Message 56418 - Posted: 19 Oct 2008, 7:18:10 UTC

since my computer always goes on strikes,I often use task manager to stop those programs that cause jam.Everytime after i quit bonic, the projects of rosetta still run,so i have to stop the project from task manager manually. But i noticed a phenomenon, everytime I quit project from TM,the next time I start Boinc, the status of the project which I quit previously is computing error, and the computing I had done before got useless. Is there any relation between computing error and manually shut down?

thanks for answering ~~

if you abort tasks through task manager then they'll error out. Why are you killing boinc.exe in task manager? I doubt that is causing you a problem - in my experience it's usually anti-virus programs that are the first port of call if XP is not being responsive.

Godfather, there have been some issues lately where the BOINC Manager doesn't seem to be in control of the tasks the way it should be. The manager has told the task to suspend and it does not respond. The result is that you can end up with more tasks then you have CPUs that are running at the same time. And if your suspend on idle or switch to another project's tasks, the tasks that were running at the time don't seem to suspend properly.

Which BOINC version are you using? And which operating system on your machine?

From looking at your tasks page, it looks like all of your machines are Windows XP and BOINC 6.2.19.

Hopefully the cause of the tasks continuing to run after they've been told to suspend will be resolved soon.

I quit Boinc often by using the Task Manager, and I don't have any Problems with it.In Fact you get errors by killing the Process or the Task..try out stopping the boinc-SERVICE in your task manager (its Dienste in german).

If running as a service, then stopping the service is fine. Killing the boinc exe isn't recommended and killing the rosetta exe is probably going to cause the task to error out.

I don't think snoozing will help. I'm not sure why you would terminate it anyway? If you do want to stop BOINC then you should either exit it from boinc manager (i.e. right-click the icon and 'exit'), or stop the service using Start > Run > net stop boinc.

I quit boinc from task manager because everytime I quit it from the tray of boinc, what i quitted was just boinc, some projects in boinc still runs(can be seen in task manager),like rosetta, which means I cant really stop the program,it's still occuping resources. Now,I got some new problems,I cant stop the rosetta anymore.when I click stop,it does stop, but next time i want to resume, rosetta start from zero percent again, not from where I stopped it,all the previous works are gone.why? this problem only occur to rosetta, seti and other projects are normal.

Rosetta only checkpoints at certain points and resumes from the last checkpoint when it restarts.

If you kill boinc then it will take a while for rosetta to end. If you exit boinc then rosetta will end immediately. are you running boinc as a service?

if boinc is installed as a service then it runs regardless of who's logged on to the machine. You can see if it's installed as a service if you do:

Start > Run > services.msc

if boinc is listed then it's installed as a service. In that case, to stop it you can do:

Start > Run > net stop boinc

(and 'net start boinc' to restart it)

As for the credits, multiple machines (i have four here, and then friends and family) for a long time - around three years now.

Someone posted this before (about boinc as a serice) when it comes to 5.98 graphics not being shown. So I take it I should uninstall boinc and then reinstall for my user profile specifically? then i should be able to see the 5.98 graphics. my task manager runs just fine even with boinc installed as a service. just the 5.98 graphics is a problem.

if you go into services (Start > Run > services.msc) you can set boinc to run under the local system account which allow the boinc service to interact with the desktop which should mean the graphics work.

I'm not sure if there are security issues with this setup, but if there are I don't believe they're any more serious than running BOINC under a power user or administrator account, and it should mean the graphics work.

moving the program in that manned caused a dll error. so i uninstalled and reinstalled but without the middle box, something about protected....
but the multiple restarts caused a computation error from to many restarts on the work i was doing.
