As my normal user, I can't run boincmgr because those aren't my processes.

Is this the standard way of running boinc on Linux? Sometimes I get a little frustrated with how ubuntu blindly follows debian practices, though I don't know if this is the case now.

I am getting Compute errors quite regularly since changing from Debian 64 to Ubuntu 32

guess I have a question about Ubuntu. I have a 64 bit dual core system and the newest greatest Ubuntu. Boinc Mgr is version 5.10.8.

I have it set to use 2 processors and to switch between Rosetta and Einstein at 60 minute intervals.

I don't see where it is doing what I tell it (at all). Rosetta has a deadline of x, Einstein has a deadline of x+2days. It will run all the Rosetta before it starts Einstein unless I suspend it.

And it is only processing one work unit at a time - shouldn't it be processing two at a time (dual core and all)?

what am I missing here - I realize i am new to dual core, but been doing BOINC for a while and linux for a while.

Stan, check your General Perferences and assure you have it set to use at most "2" (or more) processors. In general, BOINC will handle things. Even if you tell it to split your resource shares 50/50, you are not telling BOINC to switch between projects each hour. You are asking it to make a decision each hour about which projects to run. It tries to wait for an application to reach a checkpoint before switching. Perhaps you are now running some of the tasks that are not able to checkpoint as frequently, and so BOINC is trying to preserve the work done by letting them run longer.

The best way is to use the synaptic package manager to install the BOINC client and BOINC manager packages. Once installed then you can use the manager to attach to whatever projects you like.

I think Joseps problem is that he's installed Ubuntu and overwritten his boot.ini... I've never really played with muliple OSs on a single box so I'll leave it to someone else to tell you how to fix this.

I had a dual boot box once, this one, but eventually decided not to go that way.

This is my experience with dual boot: Once you go dual boot, the G.R.U.B. owns your boot sector. You must always boot through the G.R.U.B. Supposedly, it is possible to change the default OS (i.e. WinXp instead of Ubuntu), but I never succeeded at that.

As to installing BOINC on a linux box: Definitely use the Synaptic Package Manager. Trying to install BOINC the "old way" is not at all easy or intuitive for those not familiar with Linux.

To escape dual boot land, I had to reformat the hard drive... fortunately, I had a spare activation on my WinXp license.

GRUB (a bootloader program that Ubuntu installed to allow you to choose which OS to boot) has got your boot record. You can get rid of it by doing a 'repair' install with WinXP. I'd back up your documents first just in case, I've had the "my documents" folder gobbled before.

What failed running BOINC in linux? If you just go to "add/remove programs", select all open source apps, then search for/choose BOINC, it should just install itself easily and properly... even the Synaptic alternative is similarly easy.

The grub bootloader reads the file /boot/grub/menu.lst from the Linux partition when booting. That makes it very easy to reconfigure grub, since all you need to do is to edit that file. However, it sounds like you have grub itself on your main hard disk, and the Linux partition with the menu.lst file on the sata drive, so both drives are needed for grub to work.

Some people make a tiny Linux partition on their main hard drive, even when their main Linux partition is on another drive. This partition contains the files in /boot and it is mounted on /boot when they boot Linux. That way the grub bootloader and the menu.lst file are on the same drive.

Ironically I just posted a help file on Ebuyers forums.... Basically the gist of it was....

Why are you trying to remove GRUB ?

If its because you want the machine to default boot windows then edit menu.lst

f you dont know how to edit menu.lst it lives.....



Dont navigate to that directory and click on the link and try and edit it that way though as you wont have ROOT permissions.

Install Kate, either with Add/Remove, Synaptic or sudo apt-get install kate

You dont have to use kate but I much prefer it.

When its installed...

press left Alt & F2

Type kdesu kate

It will ask for your password. ALL actions within kate will now have ROOT permissions.

Now use the open req and navigate to boot/grub and load menu.lst

Immediately save out as BAKmenu.lst so you still have your original version if something goes wrong.

Just edit menu.lst by copy & pasting the vista entry at the bottom of all this text above the Ubuntu entry at the top.

Dont cut out ( delete) the lower option though as when Ubuntu does a linux Kernal update it will wipe the top entry (vista)

Remember to use your own menu.lst and not just copy & paste mine.

The reason is that my hard drive setup will most probably be different from yours. ( I have five hard drives)

I reformatted my ubuntu sata hdd already including the Win XP hdd. It was an experiment I did before I upgraded my old box. I am reusing the old case, the PSU, DVD-RW, Case Fans and the two hdd for my new upgrade. I bought and installed a new P5K-E mobo and a fast Quad Q6600 :). Now my 2nd Quad Q6600 is also crunching rosetta@home work units for the second day. Funny it is running cooler with the supplied stock heatsink and cpu fan compared with my first Quad Q6600 where I installed an expensive Zalman cpu cooler. Of course I am not overclocking my boxes. I am just happy to tell you that I am now running 5 multicore computers :)
