sounds like you need to turn off Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology (EIST) or make it register low priority tasks as valid for full speed... let us know when you've got it sorted ;)

"low priority tasks as valid for full speed", you mean the ones in windows task manager?,

ive got it semi sorted, but its still running at 50+ degrees, complaired to the 36-46ish range last week, stumpted

I think that EIST (although i'm not sure - i've turned EIST off on all my machines) steps the core down for idle priority tasks, although i might be getting mixed up with speedstep/linux/combination of both???

Either way, if the core is being stepped down to 6x while rosetta is running then it sounds like EIST is kicking in...

50° is fine - wasn't EIST running before and therefore causing it to produce less heat???

You are fine at 50C on the CPU. I use CoreTemp to measure the temp on my Q6600 and I seldom see anything under 65C and at least 1 core is almost always at 70C. I have been running this system for months now. It is a 2.4Ghz chip and I have it running at 3.2GHz so it is very hot. This is with a very large Zalman cooling fan.

Best of luck and thanks for crunching Rosetta!
Thx!

Paul

Paul 70C on any core would have me running my speeds back down PDQ. Gonna put stress on the CPU if done for long periods. If you have a good CPU cooler and still get crazy temps like that than you need to look into the case as thats insanely hot for a stock processor. A crap case like my stock speed Q6600 is in can add and easy 15-20C to your temps over buying a decent Tower or Mid tower case with more than a few fans around.
If you can afford it look into an Antec or Coolmaster Gaming case. A lot more than a generic case but your CPU temps will love you for it. I have a Q6600 in my Antec 900 running cooler at 3.43Ghz than my stock Q6600 in a cheap generic case using exactly the same Zlaman CPU fan. Its all about getting the hot air away from the CPU and preferably out of the case.

Hi, just a follow up for everyone that has posted and helpped my with the above issues with the bios and esit and the heating issue, i have just physically pulled pc apart, reseated the heatsink on the cpu, and woohoo temp has dropped to 34-40 degrees C. big difference to the 55+ degrees, and boinc is running harder (cpu usage etc) than before

so thanks everyone.
