...could be an internet problem. So, might try a reboot first. Odd it doesn't show a message about attempting to access reference site.

Would be interesting to take a wireshark trace and see where it's going and what result it's getting back. The scheduler list is incorporated into the project homepage so that is the URL you should see being hit by the BOINC client.

I've never understood why, but the client backs off for 1min and tries again and the server again says your last request was too recent. But eventually your client will back off longer and then it's next request will go through fine.

BOINC takes care of itself.

There is a bug in the BOINC-client you're running, there the deferral-time from server isn't being used. This bug is fixed in v5.10.23 and later, so upgrading will help.

...and please keep it that way... i.e. not changing anything on your end. BOINC will keep checking, and get work when the server problem is resolved.

Probs here since maintenance on server done:

1/12/2007 7:40:10 AM|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Requesting 1771200 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
1/12/2007 7:40:20 AM|rosetta@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks

Ok, now it has changed its mind:

1/12/2007 7:51:15 AM|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Requesting 1771200 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
1/12/2007 7:51:20 AM|rosetta@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
1/12/2007 7:51:20 AM|rosetta@home|Message from server: Your computer has only 534753280 bytes of memory; workunit requires 265246720 more bytes
1/12/2007 7:51:20 AM|rosetta@home|Message from server: No work sent
1/12/2007 7:51:20 AM|rosetta@home|Message from server: (there was work but your computer doesn't have enough memory)

So, the PC has 534753280. The WU needs 265246720

534753280 - 265246720 = 269506560

So what gives?

I think the word you may have missed is "More". I guess the WU needs 534753280 + 265246720 = 800000000

I would guess that once everything settles down, your computer will find work to do.

Drizzt.

First it won't report finished work or get new work. Then it reports but still won't get work, says "project encountered internal error, feeder not running". And this is after the web site reports the project is up and running again. Then it starts to download work and gives the following message."11/30/2007 4:56:55 PM|rosetta@home|Message from server:
Your computer has only 536334336 bytes of memory;
workunit requires 263665664 more bytes"

Well, it has never had more than 512mb of ram, and it never will.

In spite of all that, it finally downloaded a workunit, along with a ton of other files I didn't recognize.

So why are WUs all of a sudden needing 800000000 ?

Tis a bit harsh!

a few days ago I noticed that Pete Leman was successfully crunching with win98 so I decided to install boinc on an old win98 machine just as Rosetta went down for the couple of days! I've just been bashing my head to get it running, I had to keep clearing disk till I had well over 1.5GB despite 200MB supposedly being the minimum. Finally I got the same memory shortage error as everyone else - I thought it was just me:

|30/11/07 23:42:33|rosetta@home|Message from server: (there was work but your computer doesn't have enough memory)

what do we do next? it's not some virtual memory thing is it?
if one app. is heavy duty, I don't think you can switch on and off each application (5.82 & 5.85 etc.) separately on Rosetta can you?

b.t.w. the PC is a 600MHz athlon with 384MB.
on the main pc I do long wu's like cpdn and einstein but projects with short wu's are best for the old banger.
my hope was to use Rosetta on any other host I set up to keep the CPIDs in line and all tied together.

cheers / another Pete :-)

ps: oh, windows task manager on v.5.85 running on the other pc says it's using 185-210k fluctuating a bit (and cpdn coupled model is using half that).

well after forcing 'retry comms' a couple of times and like Ed found, it also finally downloaded a WU - even if it was a 'second hand' one:

cut&paste between pcs is a fiddle - lol!
|01-Dec-2007 00:55:50 [rosetta@home] Fetching scheduler list

and it's happily started crunching despite the warning, that's the m/ch's very first WU, wey hey! (even if the box is more like 75% winter heater and 25% number cruncher)

one slight mistake, after a minute I pushed the 'Show Graphics' button - big mistake :(
total freeze up needing the reset button so it restarted from scratch.
won't try that one again!

the time to completion prediction won't mean much yet and we'll see how the cpu handles things as it gets near the end of the WU before fully celebrating.

good luck to everyone else //pg

Good Luck getting Rosetta to run on you old Win98 Athlon. I thought BOINC checked RAM, not Virtual Memory, but I could be wrong about that.

I ran a few Rosetta WU's on a Win98 Pentium II 233MHz with 512MB RAM last winter. the host id is here https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_host_detail.php?hostid=455894.

That machine is definitly a space heater when crunching @ 100% processor use. It is currently offline, but I may get it back online running Linux in the next few weeks.

I have an even older Win98 box with only 128MB RAM that runs SETI, SETI Beta, LHC and Leiden, but I dont think I will try attaching that one to Rosetta!

I noticed that your computers are hidden, what is the host id of your Win 98 box?

an hour or so ago the smaller memory units finally came pouring in.
so i think rosie is back to normal now.

I thought boinc did both as well, thats what i read somewhere a long time ago.
