Rosetta can now abort expired or unnecessary WUs on client machines from their server.

I wonder if it would have any usefulness for this project. Quorum is not used here.

I don't know specifics but the thread states "project" and being that is SETI speaking not RAH there may be different things going on. Might be nice if RAH used that ability in their project so there are no more hung up or invalid results due to whatever reasons.

nice one - i've been asking for that for a while now!:

Purge Function

but didn't know it had been implemented? It looks like it might have been though because this machine has been off for a while but it looks like the jobs it had queued that were past their deadlines are no longer there!

If it is implemented i think its a great addition and will reduce the redundancy greatly.

I upgraded and now PROXY support seems dead. The HTTP or SOCKS proxy no longer works for me on more than one machine. Is proxy support working for anyone in this release?

There are a few of the developer/helpers posting to this thread, KSMarksPsych and me for instance. Though we do not directly develop we do suggest and iron out bugs (KSMarksPsych far moe than myself).

The purge function has actualy been in it for some time and iirc is also in the 5.8.x release and maybe before that... (but more advanced now)
It up to the project (rosetta) to turn it on in their end and actually use it.

There are no big benefit I know of in 5.10 over 5.8 other than than Boinc Managers Advanced GUI's improved local preferences setting.

But if it's working for you now with 5.8 then there is no rush to upgrade unless a project requires it.

Not sure what's happening with the official release log part posted, it maybe they are moving to the new trak release log and are altering that and forgot to update.... maybe not, lol.

As for the person using NT4, well I would certainly suggest not updating that since it's not NT4 and supprt has dropped since 5.8 for that platform. (same as the drop for Win95).

I wonder if it would have any usefulness for this project. Quorum is not used here.

Auto-abortion is useful, for the next time a serie of "bad" wu's is sent-out, and project cancels these...
Client-side, needs v5.5.1 or later.

For abortion of unstarted wu's then quorum has been met, like used by SETI@home, due to a bug this wasn't working before in v5.8.17.

As for upgrading, v5.10.8 currently in alpha-testing, is expected released early next week, with fixes for General Preferences and high CPU load with large project log files.

I think the purge is working with rosetta now - i've had a couple of machines come back after being off for a while and the expired jobs have disappeared from their queues! :D

LOL.

Please don't take what I say too seriously. I just bumble around on the alpha list :)

I'm not sure why the Trac log isn't being updated. I do know Rom is one busy man. Jord and I are keeping a running log of changes over on the BOINC forums in this thread as complied from the release emails that go to the alpha list.

If you find bugs with the core client, don't hesitate to check out the tickets over at Trac and post if it's a new one. Trac does require registration. If you don't want to do that or if you're not sure, you can always post over at the BOINC forums (also requires separate registration). Someone will take a look at it and open a ticket if necessary.

BOINC 5.10.7 is available. Please, update immediately!

5.10.7 is NOT the last recommended any longer.
There must be some kind of bug in it as last recommended now is 5.8.16 again.

i'm trying 5.10.8 for the heck of it
they keep talking about this grid view, but i can't seem to get that to work
had it once with 5.10.7 but then it disappeared on me and i can't seem to find how to get it back. ((found the problem with the assistance of a volunteer, if you click on accessible view in the view menu, if there is a check next to it you will lose the new features like I did, if you leave it unchecked you get the new "grid" view that they talk about in the new 5.10.x versions))

heres a note on 5.10.8

June 26, 2007
There are reports that version 5.10.8 of the BOINC client software causes a problem on Windows XP Pro in which the desktop becomes empty. If you see this, please uninstall 5.10.8 and install version 5.8.16.

There is a possible issue with 5.10.7 causing expoler.exe to crash. It looks like most everyone effected had a boincmanager.vbs script at some point though, so it may not effect anyone going straight from 5.8.x.

5.10.8 is still in testing they say, but you would think that it would have some of the solution to the problem that 5.10.7 was creating. I don't know about these issues since I am running XP SP2.

From the SVN checkin notes it looks like 5.10.9 is coming soon (when soon is really is anyone's guess). Rom does have a working theory. So we'll see.

Rom called me today to have me try some things with different computers. The desktop crashing hasn't been frequent so it could take days per version to see which one it starts in. (starting with 5.9.3 there are 18 newer versions in windows 32b). I've had 3 affected machines and he had me revert to 5.9.3 on one, 5.9.12 on another, and 5.10.9 on the third. 5.10.0 - 5.10.6 use the vbs script, 5.10.7 and newer don't, 5.10.9 was built with special code to extract extra data in the event of failure and to spit out callstack data. For some reason when upgrading three computers(of 9) through those versions both the vbs script and the boinc manager got placed in the startup folder at the same time. Given the length of time it would run before failing Rom took the cautious route and removed it from the site. I've only recently told Rom about the dual start up items, and haven't heard back yet.

I haven't heard of one "non alpha tester" being affected (persons moving from recommended to recommended). There is one/two who like to use alpha version and have seen this happen, but I suspect those who go from recommended to recommended will be fine KOW (knock on wood). 5.8.16 and 5.10.7 don't have the vbs script, so IMO you're safe. However, perhaps in a few days we'll start seeing more reports of it.

Here's what the desktop looks like on affected machines:
3700 desktop and 5200 desktop

Note: later in the day, the manager on the 3700 closed itself, so it then was the same as the 5200. Boinc.exe continued to run, switch tasks, return work, report work and function normally.

The only funky thing that has happened so far, was the desktop manager closing on me when I clicked on it and the graphics window opened. So I just shut everything down and rebooted and came back to BOINC 5.10.8 and its back to puttering away. See if it does this again in a few days or not.

I'm one of those persons who move from recommended to recommended. And I encountered this situation. I moved from 5.8.15 or 16 to 5.10.7. I don't use Vista, I have XP. I searched for a vbs script in my startup folder, didn't find one. It happened to me a week ago, I also initially blamed XP, before I read these threads. It hasn't happened to me since then (I haven't downgraded). Anyway I don't think this is a vbs script or Vista problem.

I'm seeing one other report of this as well. Will keep Rom up to date on both of these reports. Thanks for your input.

This morning on the machine using experimental 5.10.9, the manager closed itself. the B remained in the systray until I hovered the cursor over it and it disappeared. Boinc.exe and the applications remain running. I've taken screenshots and sent logs/txt files to Rom. It was 3 AM west coast time, so I'm waiting for him on that machine at this point. boinc is still running and I don't need that machine for anything, so I'll let it sit until I hear from him.

None of the machines has had the desktop crash since starting these tests.

Transient, or anyone else seeing this issue.

Did you run Proteins at home when you saw this? I'm currently attached to 10 projects, do we have any in common?

Proteinsathome
boincsimap
Riesel Sieve
Rectilinear Crossing Numbers
QMC
Spinhenge
Chess960
malaria control
primegrid
ufluids

When a certain Proteins app/wu run on my 4800, the application stops/starts/stops/starts over and over and over. The CPU time display goes from ----- to 00:00:01 and back and forth. Process Explorer shows boinc xplor app going from light blue to red to green. Rinse, lather, repeat. Then something crashes the desktop. I've seen it crash the desktop and take everything with it, and I've seen it just close the boinc manager, and then later crash the desktop.

I've witnessed it happen when running Proteins with Riesel Sieve (twice), Primegrid, QMC and Malaria control. Proteins was the common denominator on the X2 4800.
