Hi, I have a couple of Linux boxes sitting around that don't do all that much most of the time, but when they do things, almost all system resources are required. Does the Rosetta@Home project have plans to support the removal of the project from memory when another project is fired up, or a user logs on anytime soon? Unfortunately because of this issue, I have three Linux boxes that are unable to participate in Rosetta@home because of continual crashes during project switching or when a user logs on.

When I read the FAQ, it said that support was planned, but hadn't been implemented yet. That was dated in February 2006, and I was wondering if any progress had been made on this front or if you guys where still planning on supporting this feature. I do feel that this is a worthy cause to donate my spare CPU cycles to and would like to contribute. Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work!

hi Lance

I'm not sure what the official status on this is, but as a temporary workaround in Windows I would run boinc.exe as a scheduled task to start when the computer is idle and stop when the computer is in use. My Linux knowledge is limited, but I'm sure something similar is possible in Linux as it usually is!

Would this work?

Good idea to run boinc as a scheduled task! I'll look into it next week when I have a little free time. Thanks for the advice!

The new Boinc 5.8.x betas are trying to get care of it. They will differentiate how much RAM/swap is application allowed to consume when computer is in use (otherwise it will be preempted or possibly fully discarded from memory (= stopped)).

But the removal of the project from memory, when another project is fired up, should work already now, using the web site preferences - off course as far as the application checkpoints, but the Rosettas do.
