There was just a posting at Slashdot concerning the use of GPUs for number crunching applications. Here's the URL: http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/11/09/2056233 I am curious if this is anything that has been looked at for Rosetta@home Sean |

It's been discussed quite a lot and I believe the project staff are looking into it. I know Rom Walton is keen to get BOINC compatible with using GPUs (it might be already in one of the alpha versions now?). I saw an interview with a guy from ATI yesterday who said they were keen to pursue more DC projects too. David Baker has mentioned the xbox 360 before as well... |

But keep in mind the amount of time that F@H has been working on a GPU client (around 2 years) and the fact that we GPU beta testers are still running into truly annoying bugs with the GPU client after a month - and it's not a simple recompile of a client. After another GPU generation or two is out, the current GPU chips should be easily affordable and mainstream. Others will have paved the way to making GPU clients work, and documented the major problems with the current device drivers. And I sure hope that by then, Rosetta will have a graphics programming guru on staff to give us a GPU client. |

Yes and all of F@H and ATI debugging will make it much quicker for them to get other projects running, since ATI-AMD offered to help BOINC with the development. Team mauisun.org |
