can we volonteer to be beta testers? DK tells me that he first batches of graphics work units are coming back okay, so I think it won't be too long before everybody (with Windows) has the graphics version. |

Yes, very good graphics. Thanks for clarification on application version changes via homepage news :-) |

will we get the updated graphics stuff automatically with a wu? or will we have to download something? sorry for the stupid question. Kathryn :o) The BOINC FAQ Service The Unofficial BOINC Wiki The Trac System More BOINC information than you can shake a stick of RAM at. |

will we get the updated graphics stuff automatically with a wu? or will we have to download something? Getting a new application (hence graphics) is a server-driven process; no need to do anything from users [other than crunching]. Once WUs on Work tab are finished, need will be downloaded. You may notice version change on Work tab...now it's Rosetta 4.79 |

WOW! I didn't know that this forum would generate this much traffic. What you guys are doing is truly amazing! I love this project, there is a real community feel to it. But hey here is anouther thought to the whole graphics idea. We do live in a world where there are millions programmer and you guys are really busy doing Rosetta, I wouldn't want the project to fall behind to the production of graphics. Why not post a few a contest of who can develop with the most streamlined and optimized graphics system, Post the API's and a test WU specifically for them and give it a few months. Do what SETI did, make known on the Discovery channel and make it a contest, You want to genereate interest, I am certain that this would do it. Any takers on this idea ????????? |

Considering that the graphics are almost done.. It would be rather silly to start a contest. |

will we get the updated graphics stuff automatically with a wu? or will we have to download something? Kathryn, I think they'll send out the WU's with the graphic, when it's implemented, so you can have an eye on your BOINC manager, and when it's running a Rosetta WU, just click on it, and see if the "Show graphics" button will be active. If it's not, then the button will be greyish, and when it is, WOWWWW! I can't wait! :-D "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

I just downloaded my 100 max que and hoped the best for the screensaver units, I did get all 4.79 units, named 1hz6A_abrelaxmode_random_length20_jitter02_omega_sim_aneal_#####_# and so forth but these are not the screensaver units, has anyone downloaded one yet??? or am I confusfused and they are not out there yet, cuz I thought there were few beta's floating around???? If you get one, let us know. |

I just sent out 200 graphics work units. If anyone gets a workunit with "graphics" in the name (Windows only), try out the graphics by either setting BOINC as your screensaver or clicking the "Show graphics" button, and then post comments here please. I have it running right now on my laptop. Very cool. I will send out 200 more at 5pm PST. |

I just got the rosetta_graphics_beta 4.79 application with a WU. It looks good and seems to work well. I saw little decrease in the calculation speed while I ran it. Of course I only ran it a few minutes, twice. I didn't want to press my luck :-) |

Boinc allows us to set the maximum fraction of the cpu that the graphics routines are allowed to use. We've set it to 10%, but I suspect on most machines the graphics won't even take this much. Most modern desktop Windows machines have hardware accelerated graphics, and your graphics card will actually be doing most of the graphics computation. |

I'm glad to hear that somebody besides us has officially seen the screen saver running! Worked OK for me too (I was lucky enough to get one on the laptop). Interesting to see the protein jiggle around. Didn't seem to take much longer (although it's hard to tell given completion times vary a lot) One odd thing is that this WU has gone into PENDING status in stats and hasn't come out of it after 10 minutes. All others tend to sit in pending for maybe half a minute. But perhaps the validator is down and it's just coincidence. EDIT: I returned a regular WU on one of my other machines since, which went straight through while this one is still pending. *** Join BOINC@Australia today *** |

I'll look into this. I need to make sure that the graphics threads are exiting so that the work unit completes. It seemed that things were okay our tests, but let me know if this persists. |

The assimilator and validator for the graphics app was not running. I started them up so credits should start to be granted and work units shouldn't sit pending for that long. The workunits are completing okay. |

The workunits are completing okay. I confirm the work unit in question has now been granted credit. Thanks. *** Join BOINC@Australia today *** |
