Message 2756 - Posted: 9 Nov 2005, 21:31:42 UTC - in response to Message 2755.

I would vote for a graphics button so I could pop into the graphics then close them when I had my 'fix'. I am in the camp that wouldn't use a screensaver unless it's the only way to see the graphics, then turn it off to maximize crunch time.

I agree, this would be great. I just about always never view graphics because I want to concentrate my resources on doing the science. But if there was an easy way to turn them on and off "at the touch of a button", this would suit me just fine! :)

This feature is included in BOINC Manager already. Simply click on the WU in the "Work" tab. Then on the left side there will appear a button "Show Graphics" or something similar (don't know, because having a German install). Just click there and a graphics window will pop up.

It doesn't seem to work yet for Rosetta wu's. My graphics button is greyed out. Tried several wu's. Hopefully this is what the Baker team is working on...or something like it. I remember the button from cpdn wu's. Very nice - for a few minutes ;=)

the show graphics button only works when the application supports graphics, which is not the case yet for rosetta. the button really works, using it myself quite often for climateprediction, only screen going black here as screensaver too :)

The beta version of graphics for Rosetta@home should be coming soon.
We will probably be releasing it slowly with work units to make sure there are no bugs.

Here is a screen shot:

More details to follow when it's actually out there!

I suspect that the reason this button is greyed out for Rosetta is that we don't yet have a working graphic setup. BTW, replying to Jack Schonbrun's last in the thread, those graphics look amazing.

Now, if I may put on my 3D graphic engineer's hat for a seond, I'm going to comment on the CPU overhead of 3D rendering on a modern system.

It's really really low.

I mean that. With just about all modern systems, the graphics card does 99.99% of the grunt work.

Throw the model at the card as either a display list or a vertex buffer. Figure the appropriate matrices, maybe 100 of them - say 100 flops total per matrix, means about 10 kflops all up. Fire the matrices at the card, and tell it to get on with it, job done.

On the machine I'm posting from, a Dell 4700, the Boinc benchmark shows ~1600 MIPS for floating point ops.

11/10/2005 12:29:06||Running CPU benchmarks
11/10/2005 12:30:05||Benchmark results:
11/10/2005 12:30:05|| Number of CPUs: 1
11/10/2005 12:30:05|| 1601 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
11/10/2005 12:30:05|| 2536 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
11/10/2005 12:30:05||Finished CPU benchmarks

Matrix setup is EXTREMELY amenable to SSE optimization (trust me on this), so we're looking at maybe 3,000 floating instructions all told. With 1.6 billion available per second, you just won't notice 3,000 going astray.

dgnuff,

Yes. In our trial runs we can have very fast frame rates with very little impact on the actual scientific computation. One neat thing about Rosetta is that (in some stages of the algorithm) the structure of the protein changes lot per second. It is fun to watch it jiggle around on the screen in real time.

Jack,

Can I have two? :)

It does look interesting ... maybe you will get me back into looking at the graphics ...

Very nice looking!

One request, can you change 'step: x' to 'step: x of y' or add a percent complete bar. Don't let that hold up the release though.

you might want to add user stats values in the lower third where you have the text in a later release once everything runs smooth, think most projects include it in their screensafer.
but yes, have to agree with all the others, looks really nice and interesting

Thanks for the input. Expect the screen saver to evolve based on your feedback. First we have to worry about distributing this version, and making sure it works!

Yeah, looks cool! But a progress bar of a kind would be nice! And personal info and stats!

Is it only Linux that there is a screen saver?
I can't see graphics in Windows.
Does it start at the time of what percentage?

Only a few people or WU can receive BetaTestVer?

Sorry to interrupt.

I am also not able to see the screensaver. The button is still grayed out. Im running windows XP and am running the latest rosetta client, and the recommended BOINC client. Thanks for helping out.

Currently we are only sending out a small fraction of work units that use the graphics beta version. We will see how they run and then if everything looks okay, we will send out larger batches. We will post some information about the screen saver up soon. There is currently only a windows version, but we are working on versions for linux and mac also.

Just realized that Rosetta 4.79 (4.7MB) application is deployed; used to be version 4.78 (4.5MB). Also, memory usage is a bit higher than before. Is 4.79 the one with the built-in graphics? Some other features has been added/changed?
