I know this is a secondary consideration at best, but it would be nice to have something restful to switch on and look at for a few minutes every 30-50 hours or so. Also as more and more BOINC projects come on line it would make Rosetta more competitive. |

We will look into it for the future. This requires a bit of development time and resources that we just don't have right now but hopefully will. We are thinking of ways to provide users feedback to keep interest strong, and this is definitely one of them. |

It wouldn't need to be a sophisticated graphics just a plain cmd line that would say what it's doing. You would have my vote for this. |

There is a default BOINC screensaver which just reports the project and the percentage with the BOINC logo |

When we began this project our largest initial client was to be Housing and Food Services on campus and they requested that the app not use graphics so as to avoid confusing the staff. They felt that having something pop up would result in a rush of support calls asking about possible cracks.... |

The graphics don't show up unless you hit the Show Graphics button in BOINC anyway. |

We are working on a screensaver. The heck with a screen saver, tell me that you and Predictor@Home are cooking up a connection ... :) |

We are working on a screensaver. I never saw the usefulness of a screensaver myself. They slow the crunching down and cause more headaches for many of the projects than they are worth in trying to get them working on everyone's completely different system. |

We are working on a screensaver. Yes, they slow down the crunching but since you have the choice to run it... And OpenGl (not bound to a specific architecture - cpu or Os) is more universal than D3D. |

They felt that having something pop up would result in a rush of support calls asking about possible cracks.... {You clearly give the typical 'user' of the UW Housing and Food Services computers more credit than their support staff.} In my exprience with non-technical staff, any variation in the day to day operation of their computer results in confusion. While there are likely many users who would be able to adapt to a such a change in their routine, these are not the folks that take the majority of the support staff's time....as I'm sure you can imagine. |

To David Kim -- As nice as a screensaver is, I have to register my support on the side of the project rather than the "fluff". Obviously, the final decision lies with those who direct and control the project, but this is how I feel about it ... |

First get the science code right. That way you will be ready for the users. Then work on the screensaver. Screensavers in the correct location can be a useful advertisement for the projects and possibly generate more crunchers. BOINC WIKI |

In my personal opinion, the usual push by some to get graphics and screensavers for new projects I beleive is putting their personal wants and desires ahead of the science of the project. Screensavers and graphics should be the last thing done. The science application needs to be fully tested, working properly and proven to be stable before worrying about graphics and screensavers. I still won't use it so no matter to me how long it takes but as was stated, it can be a useful advertisement to get additional crunchers down the line. |
