my gut feeling is still the PSU not providing sufficient power for both cores, or maybe a problem with the BIOS flash. You could try creating a linux or windows live CD and booting from that to eliminate the OS from being the problem (assuming live CDs support SMP?) |

Microsoft charges by socket, so dual core (and upcomming quad core) procs will work with XP Home. However, XP-H came out years ago at a time dual core procs didn't exist. XP-H does only support 1 socket, so it could be that the system files that allow a system to support multiple processors weren't included in the version he has. |

Agreed. Don't think it should have been necessary, but when things weren't working, I did install this anyway. No noticable effect. How about this driver? |

Flashed the BIOS twice. Once before installing the X2, and once afterwards when problems became apparent. No noticable effect. How to rule out psu? As per, everything was fine with Sempron. Added X2, which I "thought" was more power effecient, and should use "less" power. So, tending to think not, but won't rule out just yet. my gut feeling is still the PSU not providing sufficient power for both cores, or maybe a problem with the BIOS flash. |

Perhaps, but M/S XP-H DOES recognize that I have a single cpu with two cores. At least on the surface, ie Device Manager, Task Manager, etc. Microsoft charges by socket, so dual core (and upcomming quad core) procs will work with XP Home. |

Perhaps it thinks you just have a hyperthreaded cpu rather than two seperate ones? Does the XP treat a logical processor any differently than a physical one? |

Using Device Manager, expanding Processors, shows two: "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+" Perhaps it thinks you just have a hyperthreaded cpu rather than two seperate ones? Does the XP treat a logical processor any differently than a physical one? |

On the off chance I'm willing to NewEgg it for a few $$ for a new psu to replace the 250 watt stock psu, how many watts should I be looking for? Bearing in mind, 89 watts for X2, ??? watts for Arctic Cooler Freezer 64 Pro, and nothing else crazy (no graphics cards, stock combo cd/dvd, 9-in-1 card reader). I really think the stock 250 should be enough, but... Good idea or bad idea: $20 - $30 after rebates, and free shipping, no tax. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817171007 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817159052 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817154013 |

Some of the HP and Compaq machines have non standard sized power supplies. Instead of 3 3/8" tall, 6 inches wide, and up to 6 1/2" deep, there's a HP here that has a power supply that's around 2.5" tall, 5" wide, and 4" deep. Before buying a new PSU, make sure it'll fit. Do you have a 300 or 350 watt power supply from your other computer(s) that has the right connectors? i.e. can you test another PSU to see if it cures the problem before buying a PSU to test? |

Yes. OK, I was online with tech support to ask and they wanted to confirm it was a SR1717CL, but when I saw your earlier post I saw you wrote SR1710NX, so I hung up on them(accidently by going back with the browser). I see the latest bios update is SP26763.exe(bios 3.13 11/15/2005). I tried asking if that bios update would handle the cpu upgrade, and about the memory location useage. |

I know the HP A1350N uses same mobo, and has X2's for the cpu. Yes. |

Here's a snippet of what she continued to type after we were disconnected: Heather R Maximum HP approv ed processor: Up to AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+ Up to AMD Athlon64 4000+ Up to AMD Sempron 3200+ Heather R If you wish you can install the BIOS update for your computer from the link provided below however, it is nothing to do with the processor upgrade. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&os=228&product=1822601&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&softwareitem=pv-39981-1 |

So, an AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ is "approved" for the mobo, and that was the BIOS update I did, even if it has "nothing to do with the processor upgrade". Really then, I "should" not be having the problems I am having. Thinking bad core on the cpu. Here's a snippet of what she continued to type after we were disconnected: |

Thinking bad core on the cpu. Sorry if i have missed it but have you run 2 instances of prime95 set the effinity to 0 on 1 and set other to 1. Let it run for awhile. |
