Hello!
I'm part of Rosette@home for a year or something. Since yesterday Boinc asks for VirtualBox and I don't get any more workunits. Why do I suddenly need VirtualBox?
Greetings from Germany

We're not sure if they have just run out of Rosetta 4.20 work for now, or if there is Rosetta 4.20 work available but there's a server issue that's stopping it from being sent out.

Rosetta also has Python Tasks for processing, but they require VirtualBox in order to be processed (hence the messages about VirtualBox, and come with their own issues- mostly huge RAM requirements (roughly 7.5GB per Task) along with Tasks that start but don't actually get any processing done and as a result block any other Tasks from being processed.

I've just had it confirmed that there's no server issue - it's just that we're out of normal Rosetta tasks atm, but that will only be temporary as they're preparing a lot to issue.
Not sure precisely when, but it sounds like it'll be "soon"

As you know, I've tried running these Python tasks for the first time and it's turned into a disaster for me, but I'm a complete novice.
My advice is <do not> be tempted to install Virtual Box to run them unless you've run it successfully on other projects already (and even then, be very wary)

This is happening to me as well. Seems to have started over the last two weeks.

It went away briefly when I reinstalled but now its back.

Will probably give up on this unless its fixed soon

I suggest you re-read the post before the one you made.
Summary- They were out of Rosetta 4.20 work, with only Python work left- which requires VirtualBox. There was some more Rosetta 4.20 work released yesterday, but it's all gone again, leaving only Python work- which requires VirtualBox.

The message will already come out for my PC, even though VirtualBox is installed
Do you have any advice?

Exit BOINC, then after a bit restart it, Make sure Advanced view is selected, go to Tools, Event log and check that VirtualBox is listed there in the startup messages.
If not, re-install BOINC, making sure you have the version that includes VirtualBox.

Thank you for your reply.
If you reference the log, the manager seems to be aware of VB.
However, error messages are displayed indefinitely.
I also tried reinstallation, but it is similar.
I will check out because my PC may be a cause.

If the system has produced errors when trying to run VBox tasks, there is a good chance it ha been blocked by the project from getting further Python work to avoid those problems reoccurring.
As to when the project will fix the issue, and how people will be able to un-black list their systems for Python work when it is fixed, no one knows.

'Rosetta@home: Notice from server
"VirtualBox jobs require hardware acceleration support. Your processor does not support the required instruction set."'

This is on a Zen1 Threadripper machine that already has a vbox VM running in the background. I am not sure if I'm using hardware acceleration in it or not, but that said, which instruction set, precisely, am I supposedly missing?

Someone posted about the same error over at Reddit.
One of the proposed solutions was this link.
The user tried it and replied with:

Thanks for the link.I've followed the steps mentioned there and I do not get any problems now with R@H anymore! That's the final solution, I think.

Edit: Not, I still get the error.... Too bad, I was too quick with replying...
But it will process the Rosetta at Home jobs even with this error extisting...

Do you have Hyper-V turned on on the machine?

Depending on your BIOS you may have to enable h/w virtualization there first. You may also have to select UEFI boot too.

I run VMWare workstation and I can't run VirtualBox so I guess I'll run some other project instead.

Directly on the Win10 host. The VM is an ubuntu bionic guest.

OK, thanks for confirming. VT-x/AMD-V are quite old at this point, and are in fact enabled on this machine.

Depending on your BIOS you may have to enable h/w virtualization there first. You may also have to select UEFI boot too.

Other virtualization features, including Hyper-V, are on, and of course this is a GPT/UEFI install with Secure Boot enabled (though neither of those things is necessary for Virtualbox to work; I am running it on an older Win7 box that uses Legacy/CSM/'BIOS' boot with an MBR-partitioned main disk without issue). Everything was working smoothly until the several weeks in November when I got no work. As it happens, Vbox 6.1.28 did not work with Hyper-V enabled on Windows 10, and they temporarily had people downgrading to 6.1.26 until 6.1.30 came out. That said, it's not clear why that should be relevant to me. The BOINC install should not be aware of the separate Vbox install, right? I have not granted any projects rights to use spawn VMs on my host.

Any case, right now I appear to have been assigned work again, for what it's worth. Hopefully that trend continues...

Message 104180 - Posted: 11 Jan 2022, 15:53:22 UTC

I have one unit running RaH w/VitualBox that has stopped receiving work. Event log mentions VB at startup - is there a way to determine if it's actually running?

It has 'happily' run the Rosetta Python Project work up until fairly recently so I figure it's capable ... but apparently something got bumped. My other units are doing well processing rpp's so I assume there's work.

I did see this in the Projects / Properties page under Scheduling:
Don't request tasks for NVIDIA GPU Project has no apps for NVIDIA GPU
Is this a setting I can change?

Please, I want to help. Thx - jc

If you go to the "Details" page for the machine in question (assuming you're logged in to the bakerlab.org website), then at the bottom of the page there is either an Allow or Skip button. You might need to hit that to re-allow Python tasks. It gets disabled after a few tasks have errored out.

E.g. here: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_host_detail.php?hostid=5090189

I have killed Rosetta in BOINC. I'm not willing to install another software layer on my Win 11 machine (which I probably won't be able to throttle with eFMer Throttle ).
Moving on to other projects where I won't have to jump through time consuming hoops to donate my CPU cycles.

Trouble getting Python set up under Win 10 with VBox.

I seem to have Vbox installed and "attached" to Rosetta. Rosetta is set to recognize Python and has d/l a couple of files but is still processing v4.2 files.

However VBox seems to want Python installed.

Where do I find explicit instructions to do this *including* links to any necessary files that do not require "compiling" or anything like that?

Thanks.
