It's a good a reason as any....I just like the idea that we all can participate in some way in helping to find cures for diseases that have affected most of us in some way. I believe cancer will still be eradicated , along with aids and alzheimers within the next 10-15 years.

Hellol from Portland Oregon.... I'm here becasue I have full blown AIDS. I have had AIDS for 29 years since I was a young EMT in the field. I grew up in San Francisco where I watched friends, lovers and people in general die by the thousands. it was truly an halocaust. Nothing less. The tragic thing is the government didn't say a word about it for 7 years so no one believed it was happeniing. It was Ronald Regan at the time. It is what I call murder through omission. Every friend I have ever known..gone. To date very little has been done to figure this virus out. I am placing my bets on Rosetta@home. This is a graet way to participate in research simply by letting Rosetta reside on my computer. It will make a difference someday.
I hope I live long enough to see some real help for this disease. Oh by the way. I have been with my Gay partner for 16 years. We have no way to protect our assets from the government should one of us die unless we can marry. 65% of all hereto marriges end in divorce. How many of you heteros can honsetly say you have been in a monogomous relationship for 16 glorious years? Because of Rosetta they will find a cure, and I will live long enough to someday marry the person I love and hopefully grow to be an old man.
Cheers, Bill

Please forgive the spelling errors, it is late at night. will fix later. Smile!

its really hard to come up with a list of "the ten top reasons" so im not going to but some reasons i crunch are

1) i have been deployed at sea for 1 month now. my computers are all running fine and crunching without me.
2) this seems to me to be the best of the help find a cure site.
3) it gives me something to talk about aboard ship with other people and try to convince them (next time we get inport) to run it on there computers
4) I want to make sure there is a cure for whatever will try to kill me before it gets a chance to try to kill me.

Well time to head off to watch. good luck all

I don't have ten reasons, only one. I had a cancer three years ago and I received a very hard treatment, very difficult to endure. I’m alive, alive. If CPU time can help to find new drugs, to understand the actions of proteins, to save lives, it’s my duty;

1. Being an egyptophile, I couldn't ignore the rosetta stone reference.
2. The graphics are awesome and sometimes even artistically pretty. I also like being able to turn them around and play with them on screen.
3. It runs faster than seti ever could on my machine.
4. Users who find the lowest energy level are actually given. This feature is tops IMO, it makes the project personal!

You guys rock, keep up the great work.

Da!

Spasibo.

We'll find someone to translate.

-- Edit --

BTW, I don't really speak Russian. You've just seen two thirds of all I know. :)

Dropped SETI for the attitude and switched to Rosetta for the science.

Everything I have is on Rosetta hope it helps someone.
My ten reasons for running Rosetta are,

The first ten people that can be helped from this science.

Then the next ten and the next ten and.........

I don't have ten reasons. I only have one.

A couple of weeks ago, my beloved mother passed away at 56 years young from a very lethal and devastating disease that we all have heard of or are familiar with. What was this disease you ask?

Cancer.

Ovarian cancer to be exact.

It is said that 80% of women who discover they have this horrible condition will not survive. This is much too high a percentage. Wouldn't you agree?

But this is what I do to help and this is where we all can help: donate some CPU time.

By simply donating your CPU-resources overnight, you can definately help physicians and scientists and chemists come up with treatments and possibly even vaccines and cures for this horrible condition. But not only this one, but to others as well.

AIDS, Parkinsons Disease, Leukemea (sp?), and all sorts of other cancers can be abolished or at least more easily treatable if more of us donate CPU time from our computers.

Kudos R@H. Thank you for letting me help.

I have my 10 reasons here... (i didn't come in here wiht 10 reasons but hopefully by the time i'm done righting the ones i already have i'll think of enough)

1. to save peoples lives in general.

2. to possiblely save my life if i am at one point in my life diagnosed with some horrible disease like ecoli. (btw does rosetta research ecoli? and did i spell ecoli correctly? plz send answer to checkmate9@mchsi.com cus i'm not gonna end up coming back to this topic)

3. I know a person that was diagnosed with a brain cancer. and have thus been told how horrible it is and i know how highly crippling it is.

4. this is one of the most effeceint ways of charity, only a minute amount on the energy bill and my computer gets to crunch numbers for hours.

5. if we find a cure for everything, there will be less threat of biological warfare due to it's ineffectiveness. this would allow some casualties in wars to die more quickly and with less pain than before.

6. if you can think of 5 reasons for something, that in itself is a good reason.

7. each reason is a very powerful reason, so this to should count for a reason

8. i'm running out of ideas for reasons.

9. no really i'm not sure if i can think of anything else.

10. (insert un-listed reason here)

The rest of my BOINC projects presently say "no new work"... here's some reasons,

Why Rosetta gets my crunch time:

10) Runs on Mac and Linux too. Everyone can help.

9) Winning CASP team, I like being a part of a winning team.

8) If your in to credits and on a team, the project is new enough it's not as hard to climb to the top spots.

7) Work always ready for download from top notch servers, no lost crunch time waiting for work.

6) Helpful message board community

5) Dr. Baker gives science updates personally.

4) Active and responsive project team.

3) Graphics help you understand how it works.

2) *I* control how long I want each work unit to run.

1) Compelling mission, technology that could basically wipe out disease as we know it!

Let's see if I get it splitted in 10 reasons:

7 It was one of the first BOINC projects, so I started it
6 It's a reliable supplier of WUs
5 The target runtime is a great asset
4 The "prediction of the day" on the main page
3 They have (nearly) solved the credit problem
2 Finding cures is more fun then finding aliens
1 They do great science and talk about it here

That's just 7, but I don't want to split some of them, just to reach the number of 10.

The top TEN reasons to run Rosetta@Home:

#10 - Teach your new core duo processors some teamwork!
#9 - Liven up your activity monitor
#8 - Help justify the $$ you spent on that new iMac
#7 - Provide some karmic balance for your thousand hours of WoW
#6 - The file names are really, really cool
#5 - Make your cell phone jealous
#4 - Increase your nerd street cred
#3 - Keep your computer occupied while you're engaged in unecessary activities, like sleeping
#2 - All that folding is like some kind of biological origami

and, the #1 reason to run Rosetta@Home -

The next time you're told to do your homework, you can say "What, shut down Rosetta@home and prolong human suffering for the sake of a term paper on the digestive system of an earthworm?!? No Way!"

The Top Ten Reasons To Run Rosetta@Home:

10) Sound more intelligent when I throw around phrases like ‘Linear Polymer Molecules.’
9) Keeps my computer busy so it won’t have time to plot against me, like my evil microwave does when I’m asleep.
8) Allocated credit can be used to pay off holiday Visa bills in some areas!
7) Become millionaire after I discover amino acid sequence for Cheese Whiz.
6) Protein folding? I thought it was Playboy center-folding.
5) Thought this would be best way to avoid the common cold and flu season.
4) A Mariachi band, a bottle of tequila and some incriminating photos. Enough said…
3) Already filled up 100 Gigabyte disk with porn.
2) Pretty screensaver’s got those flying toasters beat hands down.

… And the number one reason to run Rosetta@Home...

1) Cheap way to meet hot computer babes!

10 More reasons:

10) Number crunching is inevidable.
9) Learn how to manipulate proteins.
8) Message boards is a cool social ground.
7) If on a laptop, you could BOINC anywhere in the home (including the
bathroom).
6) Learn how to be a geek in three easy steps.
5) Drinking and BOINC'ing is not a crime in most countries.
4) Encourages geeks like me to upgrade my computer system.
3) Rosetta@home can be a spectator sport, only without the sport.
2) People are more impressed when you're doing a biochemistry project.

And the #1 reason to do Rosetta@home:

1) Cranking numbers is a bit of a turn-on.
There are 10 types of people in the world:
Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Here are the 10 reasons I run this project:

1. One of my machines predicted the lowest energy structure for a work unit (I was once known as Electrolyte), so I know my CPUs are not being wasted.
2. Can change the times of how long you want work units to go on for.
3. Fantastic contact between the project team and it's users.
4. The research is very important.
5. The client software is highly stable.
6. When help is needed, you get it from many different people.
7. Very friendly community.
8. Multiple operating system capability, good for a wide-range of computers.
9. Dr. Baker personally giving updates about how the project is going.
10. Screen saver is very useful at understanding what is happening in the work unit.

..and because of these 10 reasons, I will be taking part in Rosetta@Home for as long as it's running.
