Only positive out of this is that Rosetta@ home is losing participants and does not seem to care. Bye It's not so positive (from a scientific point of view). |

Hi, it's great to hear about it. Is your work for the Corona Virus finished in boinc? If yes I could help other project. |

I've been seeing a lot of tasks lately with names stating with vegf_site. This article gives a strong hint that these tasks could be related to COVID-19. even if David Baker is too busy to answer your question: Pandemic Provides New Target for Pain Relief Research https://uahs.arizona.edu/tomorrow/pandemic-provides-new-target-pain-relief-research |

I am F89479uierfij pissed. This video has shown up as a new page in my browser since yesterday every 30 minutes or so. I am not clicking on anything to get it. Yes that means a lot of new tabs, I am sick of it. I don't know how you are doing it, but it keeps showing up as a new tab. I want it to stop. NOW. Or I am going to be really f489-43y8794try pissed off. If I have to deal with this crap any longer this will escalate to whom ever will listen, and I will demand retribution. This is not what I asked for. Once is enough. STOP IT. And If you think I am mad now, just keep sending them. PS - YouTube is who is streaming it. And as I write this, I got another one. This is shit. STOP IT. Is he still alive? Life is limited. Death is a surety. |

yes he is ;o) take a look here ;) https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85609 Ugh, a climate change believer. Still, looks like the SETI work will be coming back shortly? Is his new approach involving volunteers or is it just a small amount of computing done at their end? |

I've been seeing a lot of tasks lately with names stating with vegf_site. There's usually a good side to everything. For me, it made me quit my shitty job. |

I'm sorry that I partially caused this from pushing the PR subject over and over on the posts. Is it? Results in last 24 hours is now over 600,000. I usually see it at 500,000 and something. |

This is shit. STOP IT. You mean for people with one simple computer and not doing GPU work. Folk like us with many machines and many projects need the fiddly bits to work sensibly! All I ask is every chip I own runs 100% of the time and doesn't sit idle. To make that happen required a lot of time on my part, which should have been automated. |

You can always write your own version of the Boinc client To be perfectly honest you are NOT the basic user Boinc is aiming for when they want people to crunch, they want cpu users mostly with some gpu users thrown in for good measure if they aren't doing other things with their gpu's. MOST gaming gpu owners....wait for it...GAME, they do NOT crunch for Boinc with them!! Those of us that do are not the norm, there are a few who do both but they are even rarer in the big scheme of Boinc. Sure there's been lots of time ot change things but until we become the 'norm' there is little reason to change everything for the minority. Oh and those cpu users that they envison using Boinc attach to one project and never leave it or attach to a 2nd or 3rd project but that's it, none of this attaching to 200 projects and crunching for each one every day stuff. Boinc was simply a proof of concept idea Dr A had saying that he could get a group of people to donate their resources on something and he could do it on a large scale, that's it nothing more and he achieved that with tremendous success with Seti being the Project almost everyone started with. If you look at Boinc Stats numbers you will see that Seti has had Users 1,808,938 over the years but only Hosts 112,630 remain today. That does include the latest 'break' they are taking but they have both the highest number of users signing up and leaving of any Project in Boinc. If you add in that some users have multiple pc's that's even worse of a stat. |

Sure there's been lots of time ot change things but until we become the 'norm' there is little reason to change everything for the minority. If you look at the number of people running the likes of Einstein and Milkyway and Collatz on GPUs, I'd say it was a pretty big proportion of people using GPUs. WCG is (still!) working on a GPU version of the coronavirus program, although not sure why since that research is presumably drawing to a close. Even with just CPUs I find problems if you run anything that does multicore programs (LHC and Milkyway at least). It can't work out how to fill the CPU. Oh and those cpu users that they envison using Boinc attach to one project and never leave it or attach to a 2nd or 3rd project but that's it, none of this attaching to 200 projects and crunching for each one every day stuff. Boinc was simply a proof of concept idea Dr A had saying that he could get a group of people to donate their resources on something and he could do it on a large scale,Yeah it does pretty well, I just get irritated with the basic flaws (not programming flaws but common sense flaws). that's it nothing more and he achieved that with tremendous success with Seti being the Project almost everyone started with.I started with United Devices (which I've just found out David Anderson was involved in aswell - he was the CEO or something), then when I installed it on all 150 PCs in the office, one of my colleagues told me about SETI (non-Boinc at the time). That was back when his more powerful desktop had two cores! He kept SETI on one and let me put UD on the other. When UD closed down I found Boinc. I had that running on 500 machines at another workplace, which did piss some folk off with the heat and fan noise. I saw them continue to run for about a year after I left, then when they finally found a permanent replacement for me, the bastard uninstalled them all. He's one of those power hungry admin types, everyone must have the same desktop picture, same control panel settings, etc. They asked me to return several times :-) IT support should support, not control. If you look at Boinc Stats numbers you will see that Seti has had Users 1,808,938 over the years but only Hosts 112,630 remain today. That does include the latest 'break' they are taking but they have both the highest number of users signing up and leaving of any Project in Boinc. If you add in that some users have multiple pc's that's even worse of a stat.Probably people like you and me with many PCs are the sort interested in searching for ET. |

Sure there's been lots of time ot change things but until we become the 'norm' there is little reason to change everything for the minority. That's because you don't like the defaults and those were put in afterwards and then supported overtime, meaning it was designed to do that stuff from the ground up. Hopefully the new 64bit version will have some of those things fixed. Oh and those cpu users that they envison using Boinc attach to one project and never leave it or attach to a 2nd or 3rd project but that's it, none of this attaching to 200 projects and crunching for each one every day stuff. Boinc was simply a proof of concept idea Dr A had saying that he could get a group of people to donate their resources on something and he could do it on a large scale, As I said alot of those are holdovers now from the original 32 bit program. that's it nothing more and he achieved that with tremendous success with Seti being the Project almost everyone started with. Yes he was involved in UD because they wanted to do something similar to and involving Boinc, it's like an Account Manager, and helped them develop it. Maybe but I think it hit a core feeling that we CAN'T be alone. I saw a story the other day that said major religions are losing follwers because of their resistance to acknowledging that "aliens" exist or existed at some point, and have been to Earth. As far back as pictures were drawn on caves ther have been htings drawn that people couldn't wrap their heads around so they depicted them in the best way they could, some of those things bear more than a passing resembelence to todays space craft and the protective suits people wear. Now even if it is because Scientists saw the cave drawings and said hmmm it doesn't explain what the cave painters were trying to depict. |

You don't need to change the defaults to make it screw up, you don't need to touch the app_config. Consider a user with a 12 core CPU. He attaches to LHC and asks for Atlas tasks. He attaches to Rosetta. LHC hands out 8 core tasks, Rosetta hands out 1 core tasks. He sets the weighting to 10 LHC, 1 Rosetta. The only sensible thing for Boinc to do here is to run LHC on 8 cores and Rosetta on the other 4. But Boinc won't do that, because that would give a weighting of 2 to 1, when the user wants 10 to 1. Haven't they considered that Rosetta is more important than no science at all to this user?Even with just CPUs I find problems if you run anything that does multicore programs (LHC and Milkyway at least). It can't work out how to fill the CPU.That's because you don't like the defaults and those were put in afterwards and then supported overtime, meaning it was designed to do that stuff from the ground up. Hopefully the new 64bit version will have some of those things fixed. I could understand programming mistakes, but common sense was the same back then surely?Yeah it does pretty well, I just get irritated with the basic flaws (not programming flaws but common sense flaws). As I said a lot of those are holdovers now from the original 32 bit program. Yes he was involved in UD because they wanted to do something similar to and involving Boinc, it's like an Account Manager, and helped them develop it.I only saw UD running a single core of one project. Agreed. And because the chances of life only existing on one of how many trillion planets is absurdly low.Probably people like you and me with many PCs are the sort interested in searching for ET.Maybe but I think it hit a core feeling that we CAN'T be alone.
