Message 18110 - Posted: 8 Jun 2006, 11:50:29 UTC - in response to Message 18071.

Hi,
I don't think it's a good idea to translate what I've done.
The .po file is not complete and translators will have to do their work again.
As I said previously, it's a first draft and lot of features are missing (I just noticed this morning that the footer part is missing also)
So first, I need help to improve the draft and when I think (or an administrator thinks) that the file is complete, everybody will translate it.

I am well aware of that, it is just that I am doing the translations now as I have some spare time between two jobs. The translation I have done so far will not change, it will just have to be inserted into that .po file properly. Presenting it was rather thought as a kind of spark for some brain storming for other people with abilities I do not have.

And, as I think these will be the parts most interesting to "Joe Average" trying to understand the project he is supposed to join, I have translated the Science FAQs into German. So, if anybody else has finished building a .po file and it is approved by the project authorities, the text can be inserted into that file, either by me or by whoever will take over the task. I just offer the texts her for everybody to copy.

In the long run I rather think we will have to coordinate it across different groups and languages, for now I just wanted to "get the ball rolling" (too lazy to look up the respective expression in English yet).

Let's work on the en.po version first on this thread so we don't have to filter through and coordinate other translations.

Can volunteers always post a "draft version" and any new additions and edits can be done on that draft version to create the updated draft and so forth?

Once we have a final en.po version that covers the important information and that we all like, I can integrate it with the site and then request translators to translate the file.

Thanks!

Ok, I've looked a little at the Seti home page .po file.

If you want a underlined link you have to put a % sign : %your underlined link%
To do a black dot it's <ul><li>first</li><li>second</li></ul> like html

So for Rosetta it should be (I just give an exemple)

msgid "YOUR_ACCOUNT"
msgstr "<ul><li>%Your account% - view stats, modify preferences</li></ul>"

msgid "TEAMS"
msgstr "<ul><li>%Teams% - create or join a team</li></ul>"

There is a lot of <ul><li> </li></ul> tags IMHO: is there a more simple way to do black dots.
Can someone confirm before I modify the draft ?

For these, don't worry about the dots. Just the text. If a complete list is in the msgstr, then adding the html for the dots (as it is in the html source for the web page) would be helpful.

Just had a look at the SETI en.po file: I think you need to write "%s" instead of just "%" to obtain a link. Also, I don't think it is necessary to have a separte msgid and msgstr for each line of text as in your example. You would save yourself and David K. a lot of work by placing whole blocks of text in one msgstr:

msgid "RETURNING_LIST"
msgstr "<ul><li>%sYour accound%s - view stats, modify preferences"
"<li>%sTeams%s - create or join team"
"<li>%sApplications%s"
"<li>%sServer Status%s"
"<li>%sAdd-ons%s</ul>"

Well, in the Seti .po file, they've done that, so I've done the same thing with the Rosetta draft.
Perhaps your method is better, I don't know...Let the administrators decide what's easier for them

Perhaps your method is better, I don't know...Let the administrators decide what's easier for them

See this example from SETI:

msgid "ACTIVATE_OR_CREATE"
msgstr "Special instructions: <ul><li> %s For SETI@home Classic participants %s "
"<li> %s For users of command-line, Mac Menubar, and pre-5.0 clients %s .</ul>"

or this one:

msgid "PART_REQ"
msgstr "<ul> "
"<li> There is an initial download of about 10 MB. "
"<li> You'll need about 20 MB of free disk space and 64 MB of RAM. "
"<li> with a typical computer (such as a 2 GHz Pentium 4), "
"you'll need to let SETI@home run for at least 2 hours per week "
"(slower computers are fine but they'll have to run proportionally more). "
"</ul> "

and I think David Kim also suggested to include the whole list in on msgstr.

There are indeed different ways to do this to be more efficient (Hoelder1in's is an example). Do what you can and the hope is that it should improve as volunteers start to edit the draft whether it is their own work or others.

Well, I think my draft is easier for translators because there is no html in the strings: if possible, all the html is done in the php page.(it's more difficult to translate a text full of html than little english strings).

Just my personnal opinion, as I don't like to translate text full of %s <li>, etc:
I always make mistakes !!

As I don't know if administrators want to use my version or Hoelder1in version,
I've put my draft here
I'll continue to work on it next week, but feel free to improve/correct it

...well, I just wanted to make a suggestion, I have no intentions to provide a full en.po file myself. There are certainly different ways to do this... ;-)

Hi,

Thank you Arnaud for your en.po.

I'll translate to Spanish soon, (and keep in English the "msgid")

The address you sent in message 17935 will help to improve the Spanish translation

Great work!

I would now like to wait until David gives his o.k. for using that .op file.

The file itself suits me well as I have now translated the:

Front Page
Welcome from David Baker
Disease Related Research
and Rosetta@home Science FAQ

pages and have the texts ready to be inserted into the .po and have begun with the other two. I'll continue with that as soon as I have the time.

If you can, donwload the Rosetta en.po file here.
I have corrected some typos and mistakes and try to resolve a problem I had with the Angstrom sign that didn't display correctly.
Unfortunately, I can't edit my messages after 1 hour on this forum.

When I have time this week, I will work on integrating the en.po file into our site and when that is done, I'll give the okay for translations. Thanks everyone!

Just to give everyone an update,

I set up a test web site identical to R@h so I can integrate the en.po file and test it before using it for the actual project. So far I have integrated the home page, welcome page, science faq and disease related research starting with Arnaud's en.po file. I should have a final version that volunteers can start translating early next week.

Thanks again!

Well, thanks to you and your good work.
I hope you haven't had too many problems with the en.po file.
