hi,

After my successful first day yesterday and my 5 credit inaugural upload, today I have attached five new computers.

This one failed to download its first WU, and a second one failed on its second WU as well, making 3 wu with a "client error downloading".

In one way this is not a problem, as all the boxes got work eventually, but is there an issue that I, or the project, need to address here? Any idea what caused it?

Operating system is Win XP on all these five new boxes

I am still using BOINC client 4.45, does this cause probs for Rosetta downloads?

Download was on an ADSL line shared between seven computers (including these five).

regards,

v4.45 has a known download-bug, there if a started download is for any reason stopped and continued later, the result will error-out.

Upgrading to v5.2.x will fix this bug...

... but, v5.2.x has another download-bug that can show-up, atleast if you're using a proxy.

So, till this last bug is fixed, it's not certain upgrading will solve anything for you...

I used V4.72 for a long time in order to get around the first download problem, and for the improved scheduler. It's not "as good" as the V5.2.x, and I'm not sure if it has the second download problem or not... you can find it here if you want to try it.

Be aware that "downgrading" from 4.72 back to 4.45 can cause problems - if you have to do that, you should run the work dry, uninstall, delete the BOINC folder, and install "fresh", reattaching, etc. Upgrading can be done in place, as long as BOINC is not running (completely stopped, not just BOINC Manager, use file/exit and then check...) without losing any work.

That does explain at least one of the three failures I reported before, but sadly I have just had another, while getting this Linux box onto Rosetta.

This is using BOINC client version 5.2.7 for i686-pc-linux-gnu
in command line mode, and got the following errors extracted from the client standard output

yet some minutes later the client automatically reported the failed download, requested another one and that worked fine. Any ideas please?

Sadly I have already stopped the win boxes for the weekend, so can't now go back and look in the message window to see if they were the same error or the one you suggested.

no, not using any proxy from where the linux box is connected. Goes thru two Linux firewalls before reaching the net, and the IP gets masq'd twice en route, but that has never given me a problem with anything else, including other projects' downloads.

On the brighter side, I am up to 9 boxes (1*Win2k + 6*WinXP + 1*LinuxCentOS + 1*LinuxDebian). 6 boxes came on perfectly, and all of them came on after one or two tries.

The download-bug introduced in v4.45 wasn't fixed before in v5.1.2, and v4.7x has also some other bugs not present in either v4.45 or v5.2.x, so wouldn't recommend to use v4.72...

The download-bug in v5.2.x has with downloads failing to connect at 1st. attempt but works later, but if there's no "Temporarily failed download" don't know of anything, and isn't running linux...

I am using 4.45 with no problems downloading. One system on mine on my wireless network was having a problem downloading, but cleared up when I moved it to another location, that was a networking problem, not a 4.45 problem.
