Just curious as you did have a previous announced bonus program just not on a daily basis....

I was thinking most people would be against this, but lets hear some opinons. Yes/no, how much, how often?

personally i'm not really bothered either way, but I think most of the people that are in it for the competition would be against it, and I can't see it attracting any new users so I think it'd be detremental if it had any effect...

I've been known to be wrong though ;)

I'd go for something more tangible.. a printable award, or linkable proof that someone's system(s) have managed to get the best prediction for a certain day. Make it something with bragging rights beyond just points..

1st thing is I don't care either way...just a question.... 2nd is this ought to be a poll then by your response Dr. Dave ...not a random reply to a post yeah or nay...Curious how you handle these posts and some of the other "Hard" questions I have asked of your project....TY

I don't think a poll would give much credible data as only a small and biased proportion of crunchers would poll.

I would be against it. Let's keep credit awarded tied only to crunching effort. A certificate, name mentioned on Rosetta home page, and perhaps a mention on one's 'your account' page and next to one;s account information in forums posting is more than enough.

No. Extra credits at a project is not better than cheating clients. Send a nice certificat to the user.

If "extra credits" means extra cobblestones, no.

Cobblestones are defined in terms of direct contribs to the number crunching and nothing else. This matters to some people.

However, in my opinion it is also important to credit people for other contributions. Great (indirect) contributions to the science are made by regular contributors to the forums and so on.

The protein of the day idea is not so much a reward for contribution, but a reward for being the lucky one to get issued the right WU - this is more like a lottery than a reward for contribution. Yet we know that lotteries attract different people than linear rewards, so some form of reward like this can also be expected to keep participants enrolled.

These three kinds of reward should be kept separate - they will attract different people, and will attract nobody if mixed, in my opinion.

My suggestion for a suitable reward for protein of the day would be to include a little graphic in the author line next to the name of the author of their forum postings. A little star perhaps (following SETI's star user award) or suchlike.

Ever since school we all like being awarded a star - and McDonalds even use it to motivate junior staff. Whatever we think of McD they would not use them if they did not work.

It should not last forever - my suggestion would be you get the star on the day the protein of the day is identified, and keep it for 100 days. Make the star clickable, taking you to a page that shows the user's protein and some info on protein of the day. Make it clear that it is partly a matter of luck, but that the more WU you crunch the more luck you are likely to have.

SETI may be able to help out with the patch to include merit icons in the forum pages.

You could have saved a step and simply agreed with what I said.....

The mention of the user with the best prediction both in the journal and on the predictions page and maybe also the chance of being citied in an ensuing paper should be reward enough. I know it would be for me.

If someone wants more points add a dual core amd to thier arsenal you will be glad you did.

No extra cobblestones, but how about a sequence of colored protein strands (or some symbol), one for each time up to something like four, next to the person's name in the forums? I would differ with River in that this would persist. I suspect this might be easier to manage from a project standpoint instead of deleting "extra credit points" every so often.

If not that, then it's only worth an "atta boy". This "award" is really the luck of the draw and doesn't reflect anyone's true efforts.

I'm not sure that a footnote citing "Purple Rabbit" would be academically acceptable :-)

I can see where that might take some explaining at a peer review.

A footnote would not be acceptable mostly because you're not quoting Purple Rabbit... a special thanks in the acknowledgements section on the other hand is perfectly acceptable!

I really like his approach here! This is a good idea. Also, the more things that are done that encourage people to visit these forums is tied to how persistent user participation is.....For some it is Cafe Rosetta, for others it is the computer hardware info in the number crunching threads.

As stated by some, the best predictions are utterly random, so no "special" efforts are required.

And as for starting to grant special "credit" badges, well, look at the "green star for the money donors" discussion over at Seti! A badge for e.g. participation on the boards, again, some pump up their postcounts in threads like this, and for the content of some people's posts, no I won't even go there.

So a booming "NO" from me.

One gets a bit of recognition, and bragging rights, for getting lucky. That's enough. No extra points, please. Badges are maybe cool - but if someone wants a badge badly enough, he can put a link in his sig to the appropriate page.
