I just got notified by BOINC in my messages that "Project is Down" when reporting completed unit. however the server/website says it is up? |

See this this thread. The database server was/is overburdened and I am currently working on a fix. Click the update button on the BOINC manager for this project and see if it still gives a "Project is Down" message. |

I'm currently purging/archiving the database of old work units and results. This will continue to run overnight. Hopefully as the number of records in the database and the load on the server get reduced, this issue will be resolved. |

Better get the server/servers up to snuff!! With FAD getting ready to shut down, I think you're going to have a lot of people switching to Rosetta. You think they're overloaded now? You haven't seen anything yet!!! |

seti was down for a few days to purge the database. They do scheduled shut down to avoid general panic. An overnight purge once a month would not be a problem for most crunchers. |

... With FAD getting ready to shut down ... Excuse my ignorance, but what is FAD? BOINC.BE: For Belgians who love the smell of glowing red cpu's in the morning Tutta55's Lair |

Better get the server/servers up to snuff!! With FAD getting ready to shut down, I think you're going to have a lot of people switching to Rosetta. You think they're overloaded now? You haven't seen anything yet!!! Believe me--we will! I'd like to welcome all former FAD participants to our project. We've been able to accomplish far more in the past two months with BOINC than would ever have been possible with our internal computing resources, but it is clear that we are still limited by total computing power. The landscapes on which we are searching for the global minimum are very large--we are trying to find a small needle in a very large haystack. My guess is that if we could increase our computational throughput by a factor of ten, many of the search problems would be solved. Hang in there everybody--we will have the server problems ironed out very soon. We are still pretty new at this. Things should be very stable quite soon--we can get all the hardware necessary to handle increased data flow, and David K. is a real pro. |

David, I am not sure the 'needle in a haystack' example describes very well what we are up against. Haystacks tend to be three-dimensional whereas our problem has several hundred dimensions. Let's assume we are searching a 500 dimensional space and the rmsd value is something like a distance in that space. So if we want to improve our search result from rmsd=2 to rmsd less than 1 we need to find the rmsd<1 volume (the needle) within the rmsd<2 volume (the haystack). Now, since the search space is 500 dimensional the rmsd<1 volume is just 1/2^500 = 1/3e150 the size of the rmsd<2 volume. So assuming the volume of a needle is 1 mm^3 that makes our figurative haystack much larger than the size of the Universe, or to put this differently, we are trying to find a volume smaller than one cubic Angstrom within the size of the Universe. I guess the point I want to make is that there does not seem to be any hope to find the rmsd<1 volume by randomly searching the rmds<2 volume with any kind of computing power (I hope I don't sound pessimistic ;-) ). The only option I can think of seems to be an algorithm that is able to estimate the direction towards the minimum energy point by evaluating the local properties of the search volume. To transform this back into your earth explorers example, it seems to me that it is not enough to randomly send more explorers into an area which previous explorers already found to be at a relatively low elevation (this would be similar to randomly searching the rmsd<2 volume in the hope to find the rmsd<1 volume) but the explorers somehow need to be able to at least estimate the direction towards the lowest elevation from observations which they can make at their current location. Simply following the local downward slope may not necessarily be the best strategy (this just gets us into local minima). Perhaps there are other more useful local properties of the search volume like taking local averages of the elevation/energy landscape, looking at higher derivatives, something other than energy altogether ... Well, sorry David, time to shut up. I guess there is't much we lay people can suggest which the experts haven't already thought of. Anyway, I am really looking forward to see how this project gets along and I definitely appreciate your occasional updates in the forum. -Hermann |

dear mr. baker, i am one of the hordes of Fad members searching for a new distributed computing project to run once Fad shuts down dec. 16th. so far i have installed rosetta on 2 machines and haven't been able to download any work. i understand you're having problems with your server, but to those of us searching for a new project to support, this doesn't come off too well. to that end i would like to extend an invitation to you to come over to our home bulletin board and talk about your project. would you be willing? if so our address is http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/index.php? if so please us this thread for your reply's. http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21274 we are anxious to know if you can support a mass influx of new people and machines without the stoppages that we see right now. thank you, Di vavega |

David K. is a real pro. He sure is! :) Einstein@home had a similar purge/downtime issue when they first started, so this learning curve is not surprising. Regards, Bob P. |

To everyone visiting from FAD, please recognize you're seeing the project for the first time on its first public outage (that I'm aware of). It's a great project, one that I keep hearing praised for their communication and feedback on results. . If you're interested, check out their statistics on the site below, you can see the project has been growing steadily and this is the first wu hiccup since the project went public: http://www.boincstats.com/stats/project_graph.php?pr=rosetta -Ethan |

It's a great project, one that I keep hearing praised for their communication and feedback on results. Yes, I agree totally. The communication and feedback of Rosetta@home make it a real hands-on science project with close communication between us and the Rosetta science team, in contrast with some of the other BOINC projects that seem more impersonal and distant. Our suggestions are given serious consideration! So bottom line it's a heck of a lot of fun! This is a great place to be, just give it a little more time, I would expect less than 24 hours to resolve the server issue from what I have gathered! :) Regards, Bob P. |

Been looking around and I'm from the Fad program an like n7vxj said you ain't seen nothin yet.I'm having problems with connecting to the server for the message board.(too many connections!)It'd be nice to see a sticky with how this program is basicly setup on windows and linux without jumping all over to figure how things run. |
