10) Runs on Mac and Linux too. Everyone can help.

9) Winning CASP team, I like being a part of a winning team.

8) If your in to credits and on a team, the project is new enough it's not as hard to climb to the top spots.

7) Work always ready for download from top notch servers, no lost crunch time waiting for work.

6) Helpful message board community

5) Dr. Baker gives science updates personally.

4) Active and responsive project team.

3) Graphics help you understand how it works.

2) *I* control how long I want each work unit to run.

1) Compelling mission, technology that could basically wipe out disease as we know it!

Humm i dont have a top 10 but here is a thouhgt. My main reason for doing this is to help increase our understanding of protiens and how they can be used to make the human condistion better for all of us. Would be super to see a cure or a drug that would help the suffering that is going on throught the world. But thna agian even if we never find any of those great things just the work that we do here will help out some where else in the future

There are a lot of very good reasons for anyone to install BOINC and run Rosetta@home. Besides simply being the best project in the current group of BOINC distributed computing projects, My list would include (in no particular order)-

1) Possibility of understanding how and why proteins can cause disease
2) The possibility of discovering new ways to treat serious illness
3) Advance the general level of human knowledge
4) Assist in the development of distributed computing and new computing tools applicable to a broad range of research
5) Increase my own personal knowledge and understanding of biological science
6) The communication and information flow between the project team and the user community is better at Rosetta than any other project
7) The project is "alive", and new information is posted all the time to keep people informed about how their computers are being used and where the project is going.
8) The projects willingness to incorporate user ideas into the project and their responsiveness to users requesting help in the forums
9) The opportunity to participate in creating the next version of the software by running RALPH@home along side of Rosetta@home.
10) The project site and Forums are not so different form other BOINC projects that users can't find what they need

This project stands out among other BOINC projects because of the information flow from the project to the users. Many other projects provide no information updates of any kind, but at Rosetta it is actually difficult to keep up with all the new information updates.

On many BOINC projects pleas for help from users are actually ignored. That never happens at Rosetta. When users ask for help on the Forums, it is rarely longer than 30 minutes before a project team member, Moderator, or System Administrator responds to help.

I am a long term sufferer of ME/CFS

Anything that can help lead to a cure is a necessity for millions wordwide.

My 10 reasons for number crunchin' for R@H, in no particular order...

10) It can help with finding cures for various health issues (ie. AIDS,
Alzheimers, etc.).
9) It's a full time job.
8) The computer does all the work for you.
7) You can compete for the highest score (if that's your thing. If not,
then you can see where you stand with the rest of the world).
6) Deadlines are easy to meet.
5) There are no bosses looking over your shoulder.
4) There is potential for expansion (ie. could look for four or five
specific things).
3) The graphics are spiffy.
2) Encourages for an individual to learn (got me curious as to how proteins
actually works).
1) If your a Biologist, it'll look good on a resume.

Unfortunately, I could go on and on for another 10345724590237456234 bazzilion reasons for Rosetta, but that would take forever. That, and it only calls for ten.

1) Protein structure prediction, as well as protein design and docking, offer potential for breakthroughs in medicine and treatments for myriad diseases
2) The Rosetta approach seems very promising, as shown in previous biannual CASP experiments it's one of the most successful prediction pipelines available today
3) International (scientists from all over the world) project team
4) The research, i.e. the Rosetta software itself, is being made freely available to the academic community. And it's already used by others (like HPF/WCG) so there is a multiplier effect.
5) Project team is very transparent and responsive, with very little effort one can monitor daily progress and actually understand what it's all about, what his own PC is doing and benchmark results in Top Prediction.
6) No wasting of crunchers' CPU time (initial replication=1, quorum=1), even if it affects accurate crediting for the time being
7) Variable run-time work-units, allowing one to drastically reduce Internet traffic
8) Friendly and active community
9) Nice graphics screensaver
10) Gave me incentive to learn more about computational biology

Here are some reasons why I am contributing.

1. My Dad recently sufferred a bout with cancer. He was lucky and got over it. My grandfather, on the other hand, lost. That was over 5 years ago. In a way, I do it to honor his memory as I was never particular close with him.

2. I am an engineer and always too screamish of blood to have become a doctor to help others. This is my way of helping.

1. A friend of mine died of cancer at 37. He was a former NIH scholarship holder in the research on cures and vaccines for HIV and was a brilliant scientist (which is why he got that sholarship). So I partly do it for him, he would have loved the project.

2. I am a chemist who has himself been in a very mathematical part of science (crystal structure determination). In the neighbouring lab, there were two guys which most of us thought to be a little odd and cracked up. They were trying to predict the structures of short metal complexes that were designed to look like the active centers of enzymes and wanted to emulate those enzymes' functionality. Weird with that PC power we had back then (486s) and often it took weeks just to do one calculation and just to find out something had gone "ploink". Looks like these things are not so weird anymore, and maybe I'd like to work off a little of the time I'll spend in purgatory by already now acknowledging that, maybe, those guys weren't so weird at all.

Further reasons are more or less equal to everybody elses.

Apart from all the other (obvious) reasons stated above (cure for human diseases, benefit for humanity, etc), I have to confess to a rather deep green, anti-waste streak to my thinking. Crunching Rosetta saves wasting idle computer time.
