In Memory of Coleman S. Leuthy

Coleman S. Leuthy (1930-2012)

Died on February 1, 2012. He was a resident of Seattle, Washington. He was an accomplished mountaineer, mycologist, and naturalist who taught chemistry. He was the former president of the Puget Sound Mycological Society.

Leuthy was featured in a mountaineering article in the June 27, 1959 issue of the Saturday Evening Post, because he led the third successful attempt of the Ptarmigan Traverse in Washington State's North Cascade mountain range. He was a well known personality in the Pacific Northwest Alpine Garden circles.

I had pleasure of taking Chemistry I - IV and Wild Flowers and Edible Plants Class a Biology IV and worked as a Teacher's assistant for the following year. I hope every one has a teacher that they can remember as being the one that stretched their minds and made you think for the first time. I was very lucky to run across his name on the Mountaineer's Site looking for Climbing walls in the Seattle area. A quick few Google's later I able to give him a call. He had a basement to rent out. So for his last year of battling Cancer I was his traveling partner for long trips to his farm along Eagle Creek near Leavenworth, Washington.
