41) Questions and Answers : Windows : Not getting any tasks (Message 62501)

Post:
I turned OFF all my 5 boxes last week when I went on vacation. when I turned them on today, I can not get work and got 0 new tasks. How long shall I wait before getting new task. Message says: project servers may be temporarily down. Cannot run 5 quad computers just waiting for work for a long time. When my 5 quad runs 14hrs/day 30days a month, I am spending $27 monthly on power usage to run rosetta@home for the last 2-3 years now.
Need help on this. If not, I will switch all computers to World Community Grid. They respond very fast. Right now I am running 2 computers on WCG.
Thanks, joseps

So I am thinking that it may take many years, 10, 20 or more before Rosetta find a cure for any human diseases.

Yes and no.

Yes, in that it will probably be a long time before you can put data straight into the Rosetta algorithm and come back with a perfect answer to cure the disease you are targeting.

No, in that Rosetta is used right now by researchers to help understand proteins and take the first steps in finding cures to diseases. One public project that makes use of the Rosetta software is the Human Proteome Folding project at World Community Grid.

I agree with you. I am also volunteering one of my computers to run projects with World Community Grid. I like the way they report back projects. RH and WCG are the 2 researchers I like very much. Because of my dc with RH, I am receiving HHMI Magazine on scientist researchers. If you don't receive this yet, check it out. You can request it for free.

Hello:)
Your question echoes what is in my mind lately. I have been searching all reports concerning the projects we are crunching. I could not find anything that points to meaningful result that relateas to disease cure or leading to it. The aim of the project is very appealing because it relates to cure for human diseases.
Right now I am thinking of SETI which has been going on for many years and it has not find what it is looking for. Correct me if I am wrong. So I am thinking that it may take many years, 10, 20 or more before Rosetta find a cure for any human diseases.
I am doing this volunteer distribted computing as part of my computer hobby. I will stop it when I give away all my 5 quad computers to my grand children.
Have patience, with luck, our project may yield great results. The key is that you are enjoying the volunteer work.

joseps, please start a new thread on the Number Crunching board, and copy in the messages you are seeing.

I am sorry I was not careful where to post this. Thank you. But I have already solved the problem by simply uninstalling the McAfee Suite which has incompatibility with Windows 7 beta. Now I am running Rosetta@home projects on 3 computers with Windows 7 beta OS. I suspect these same computers will be recognised as additional computers to my name, simply because I install new OS in new hard drives.
Thanks again. joseps

I keep getting this message: "Message from server: Server error: cannot attach shared memory"
Can someone help me what it means. I get this message in one of 3 computers that are running on Windows7 beta. The other 2 computers are running ok. All have multi processors (1 DUAL AND 2 QUADS). I just hope the cause is not my computer. And I wish I could run Windows 7. I have upgraded my Vista to Windows7. I am running Rosetta@home projects in my 5 computers 16 hrs daily.
The only way I can solve this is to switch back to another harddisk drive in same computer which runs ok. But I wish to run Windows-7 on 3 computes until it expires in 6 months.
Thanks very much for your help. joseps

Here is my 32-bit Windows 7 Beta 1 host computer. Let's hope everything will work well.

Pretty soon I will also test 64-bit Windows 7 Beta 1 with Rosetta@home.

Henri.

Hello,
I am running Rosetta@home on 2 computers with installed Windows 7 Ultimate Beta. It is running well. I am happy with the beta OS.

How can I avoid "Client error" or what causes it? Another problem is "Validate error". Have I done something wrong to cause these 2 issues? I am just curious. I find these comments under "Tasks for user".
Hope someone can explain it to me. Thanks a lot. joseps

I reformatted my ubuntu sata hdd already including the Win XP hdd. It was an experiment I did before I upgraded my old box. I am reusing the old case, the PSU, DVD-RW, Case Fans and the two hdd for my new upgrade. I bought and installed a new P5K-E mobo and a fast Quad Q6600 :). Now my 2nd Quad Q6600 is also crunching rosetta@home work units for the second day. Funny it is running cooler with the supplied stock heatsink and cpu fan compared with my first Quad Q6600 where I installed an expensive Zalman cpu cooler. Of course I am not overclocking my boxes. I am just happy to tell you that I am now running 5 multicore computers :)

May I post here? I need help. I installed ubuntu in one of my computers as a dual boot with my Win XP PRO. My intention is to see if I could run Boinc w/ rosetta@home in ubuntu. Unfortunately I failed. Can not install boinc. So I unplug the sata drive where I installed ubuntu. Now I can not boot my Win XP. I am not knowlegeable with linux. I hope someone can help. The only way I can boot on my Win XP os is to reconnect the ubuntu sata drive and select from thew dual booting menu Microsft Windows XP. Thank you very much. joseps

May I post my "need help" in this thread. I installed Vista Ultimate 64bit in a separate sata drive in my Quad core box. It is running fine. I install the Boinc Manager. It is running and showing a screen without projects. I try to attach a project. It is telling I am not currently connected to a boinc client.
How can I attach a rosetta project? I need help. Thank you, joseps

I did paste at the back of my van a large print out of Rosetta@home (11x8) with an appeal: "DONATE YOUR UNUSED COMPUTER TIME TO CRUNCH MEDICAL RESEARCH"
I thought it was Eye Catching. But soon I realised cars drive close behind me to read it. It becomes dangerous I have to remove the printout.

I agree, the Duo Core Cpus are much better. I have 4 computers running in Rosetta. 2 AMD dual cores, 1 intel core duo 2 and 1 intel quad core (q6600 after the price dropped to $300). I am having fun running them in rosetta 14hrs/da. Before I just enjoy building and playing with the computers. When I discovered the Rosetta@home, I found something noble and very usefull for my computers to run. I am very happy now. My wish list is to convert amd dual cores to quad q6600. I am saving for it. :)

I would like to see a regular report on a list of successful accomplishment achieved by the Rosetta@home volunteers. Just to show that the group have done something worthwhile in their effort to help. We have been volunteering for more than a year now. Did we have accomplish something during that period? I hope I am not behind keeping with the news. joseps

Actually quad core cpu's can handle those temperatures.

I have a q6600 myself and when Idle my cpu temp of all my cores is about 56 degrees celcius and when crunching the temperatures are stable at 65-70 degrees celcius. I also noticed that the temperatures really are different between some users, I have seen users claiming to have a temperature of 50 degrees celcius while having 100 % cpu usage.

Higher temperatures (esp at max cpu usage) is normale with quad core cpu's. It varries wich stepping you got thou. The new G0 steppings have a much lower temperature but quad cores in general use alot more power in general, more power is more heat.

Trying to find a website to prove my statement but I only troll dutch forums wich isn't handy for you guys =)

Also it might be handy to use several programs to measure your cpu temperatures

I feel relief reading your post. It means my quad box is ok. BUt I have replaced my heatsink/fan. The load temp is lower now and I reduce my cpu run to 65%. Maybe I can run it again at 90% later.

I'd suggest instead that you go to the projects tab and select "no new work" for each project. Do this in advance of your vacation so that you have time to complete all the work you already have downloaded and get it reported back. Then when you turn the machine back on, just allow new work again and BOINC will download new work and continue on.

No reset is needed.

Thanks, I'l just do that.

I haven't worried about my cpu temps but I looked at them after reading your post. Running 100% on both computers highest core temp I see is 144 or 62 c and lower. I don't have the cover on mine so it is open to room which is air conditioned.

It is nice to have airconditioned room. My computer room is always at between 28C and 31C. One of my older Box (Asus A8S-X wirh Opteron 165) is now booting up abnormally longer, 6 to 9 minute, rebooting 2 or 3 times before running normally. It's core temp : core#0=50C, core#1=50C at 60% cpu time crunching rosetta. I am just waiting until it conkout on me.

Hello:)
May I post to this thread regarding my newly built Quad Q6600 box in asus P5K-E MB. Tried to run it full load with Rosetta work units. My cores temp is high at core#0=63C, core#1=62C, core#2=60C, core#3=62C. I run rosetta 14hrs daily. Got scared of high temp reading using CoreTemp0.95.
I replaced stock fan with Zalman CNPS9700.Now at 50% cpu usage, it's temp goes downt to:core#0=56,core#1=55C, core#2=54C, core#3=56C.I feel comfortable. But I am afraid to run it at full load. I researched intel document. It say you must have a inside chassis case temp at 38C for Quad Q6600. My case temp reading is 29C using thermostat placed inside the chassis case with cover on.
Any thoughts from you guys about this? THANKS
joseps :)

Thanks Danny:)
I am happy with your comment. And I feel good that my concern is gone. I will let my box run as is for now. I feel scared retampering with the Zalman HS/F at this time. It is running good and wish to relaxfor a while. Again, many thanks for all your comments.
