Status update?

I just finished installing Suse 10.2 64 bit, and searched for a 64 bit Boinc client. Tried to attach, and got the same tired message about:

I've made a couple posts about bandwidth usage when downloading new work units.

I sat down in front of my 2400+ a couple minutes ago, and saw that it had a work unit waiting to be reported. So, I updated, interested in my current RAC.

Boinc asked for more work units at the same time, so I resigned myself to waiting several minutes for my 56k to download a few megabytes.

SURPRISE!!!!

It took less than a minute.

Now, that is cool.

Thanks everyone. Whatever you have done to decrease bandwidth usage is highly appreciated.

What to do about upload errors? This isn't the first one I've seen - but this is the first 600 point upload error, lol

After this post, I'm going to abort this one. It seems to have run for two days
before I caught it, and restarted BOINC to see what would happen. It just hung at
1.something percent, and the remaining time climbed past 30 hours.

I SHOULD have copied the messages concerning this WU before resetting BOINC - all were gone when it restarte - sorry about that.

Well, it seems to be working.

There was a glitch, at first. The WU didn't want to be worked, it seemed, when the time went from 2 hours up to 24. I set the time back to 8 hours, it seemed to help - but I eventually had to reset two of the machines. They would just hang, but it didn't seem like that dreaded 1% hangup - one WU got to 12% and hung, another got to 78% and hung.

Restarting the machine would set that particular WU back to 0% - resulting in wasted time, and lost results.

It seems all the machines are finally settled in, doing one WU each 8 hours. And, the family is off my butt, complaining about hogging all the bandwidth.

I may try 24 hours again - but not for a little while.

Thanks guys - I've gained a lot of knowlege from this thread.

Thanks Scribe.

I read the links you supplies, as well as doing some browsing before I found your post. ;)

I have gone into preferences, and set my target runtime to the highest - 1 day.

Probably won't see any difference for a day or two, maybe Monday or Tuesday I can report that I'm using less bandwidth to do as much or more work.

I certainly hope that David and crew are considering a change to compression methods - Gzip looks like it is probably the best solution to that specific problem.

It's still not clear to me how that CPU runtime thing will reduce bandwidth - I'm off to read some more, lol

It is designed to allow you to run any particular WU for a longer time. So instead of downloading say 10 WUs to get 4 days work, you could download a single WU and run it for 4 days. The bandwidth of any single WU is the same, you just have to download fewer of them.

OK, first thing I thought was, that will kill my RAC. But, that's not true, as credit = computer time x bench, roughly speaking.

Second thought, what's the purpose in crunching the same unit longer? I'd have to go back and read to get it exactly right - but I'm giving the computer more time to build more models - sort of double and triple checking the work. I'll read more, but that's the idea I get from it.

So, pushing the runtime up actually helps the science, and costs me nothing in credits, right?

I like it. ;)

When I created this thread, I was only thinking of myself, and other crunchers.

http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=1287

But, the subject, better compression of the files you send out, would help to relieve some of the stress on your servers when "crap happens". As well as decreasing your bandwidth during normal times...

I followed the link(s) to find that dude. They talk funny on that forum. I think they are all yankees, or something like that. Can't understand a word they say....

But, his RAC is pretty awesome - his 1700+ is outperforming my Opteron 1800 AS WELL AS the wife's 3400 AMD64. Awesome. Hope he's got his app optimized accurately.....

I have 4 computers running, with a combined RAC of 850 (ATM). I'm downloading a heckuva lot of bits and bytes - on a dial up connection.

I realize that most people these days are on broadband, and they don't realize how BIG a 2 MB file is. But, it takes minutes to download each file on 56k. In fact, most of my connection hours seem to be Boinc Rosetta downloads. :(

Would it be possible to compress the download files, so they download faster?

Even the really fast broadband users might benefit, considering that some have bandwidth restrictions in thier contracts. (Exceed "x" gig download limit, pay a premium type of thing.)

I opened one of the 2 MB .gz files at random, using Winrar. It extracted a 6 MB file, which I compressed again using Winrar, at best compression.

hom001_aa1ten_09_05.200_v1_3.gz starts out at 2,152,755 bytes

hom001_aa1ten_09_05.200_v1_3 extracted is 6,581,169 bytes.

hom001_aa1ten_09_05.200_v1_3.rar is 918,056 bytes.

In other words, I can compress those files down to ~ 43% of the size they are being shipped at. Meaning, my computers would only be using ~ 43% of the time they are now using on the dial-up.

Not to mention, some of the big league crunchers might save a couple dollars a month on their broadband connections.

Anyone can run the same test - just grab a file or six at random from your Rosetta project folder, and see what you can do with them. (copy them somewhere else to play with them - don't mess up your Rosetta folder. ;) )

What do ya say, folks? Can we get better compression on those .gz files, please????

Note that if my RAC goes up much more, the dial-up connection won't keep up with the crunching. :(

Einstein has FreeBSD stats ............

http://www.boincstats.com/stats/host_os_stats.php?pr=einstein&st=0&to=100

I can only think that it doesn't like the FreeBSD OS, as this computer has done 0 succesfull results.

I looked on Boincstats here and there are no FreeBDS OS stats for rosetta@home.

And unfortunatly with the trouble of possible cheating, they aren't going to release the code for sometime, so you won't be able to compile a specific app for you setup :(

Crunch somthing else with this machine :) or complain bitterly on the Number Crunching thread, that way they may compile it for you.

If someone has got this going under FreeBSD post a how to will ya ?

Well, glad I stopped in to look around.

After the upgrade to 4.81, it seemed that none of my previously downloaded WU wanted to run. Which was odd, as I'd already returned a number of similar WU from the same batch.

I put those all on hold, and ran some of the newer WU, which said they were for 4.81. I got the 1% glitch on about 4 of them.

Hit reset. Everything goes away, and BOINC downloads some new WU. Same thing. 1% lasts about 2 1/2 eternities.

Was about to hit reset again, but decided to come here.....

Thanks guys. I'll let the little monster run.

FYI, I've just aborted a WU () stuck at 1% after 175K seconds

Name: PRODUCTION_ABINITIO_RANDOMFRAG_1vcc__309_441
WU: 9337995
ResultID: 11582797

Some of the PRODUCTION_ABINITIO work units take a long time to pass 1%. In some cases over 4 1/2 hours on a reasonably fast machine. Before aborting them and loosing ALL the time spent, you should check the graphic display and make certain it is not actually running. In many cases these work units take well over 700,000 steps to complete a single model. The work unit will look hung until between model completions. IF it is hung you can usually preserve some of the time spent on running it by restarting boinc. This will in most cases cause the work unit to run successfully to completion.

The project team is aware of this and they are making an adjustment in the WUs to fix the problem. But it will take a few days to two weeks for the old work units to run through the system.
