I find it funny that this is the week I decided to start running Rosseta again. I haven't been doing this for a while, but spun a server up only to find out it cannot get work! lol. I just added another project, but still find it funny...

Nite Owl, Morphy375, Scribe, et al., could it be, that you did not notice a "Foundership Takeover Request" for your Teddies team sometimes around mid December 2007? The waiting period is 2 months:
The current founder will be sent an email detailing your request, and will be able to transfer foundership to you or to decline your request. If the founder does not respond in 60 days, you will be allowed to become the founder.
...
The current founder has been notified of your request by email and private message.

If your notification was switched off and (with your own words) you were quite inactive back then...

Peter

Wow.. What a scam if this is what it turns out to be. Troll sites looking for teams with a lot of points but mostly inactive members, send a request for transfer of ownership, and if no one responds, inherit a few million points you didn't earn.

I think they need to be looked at across BOINC......

Although I am not as angry as you seem to be, this was one of the reasons Poem is getting more work from me recently.

This is getting stupid

Combined total of 9 compute or validate errors in 3 days. Some within hours of each other.

I thought you guys would do a better job of filtering out bad tasks. I hate wasting cpu time/power on projects that will not validate or go down in flames at the end of their run.

I am tempted until CASP8 is over to set my run time to 2 hrs instead of 4 so I don't waste time on 'junk'

It is still another 6 hours before I get home and see what errors showed up this time.

You guys know that you are losing good computing power due to alot of hung tasks and validate/compute errors. The lack of anyone saying anything about these problems is not a good track record for RAH.

Since I run all my servers/pcs headless and run the software as a service that does not interact with the desktop, I forget the screen savers are there! lol. I know how to make them work, but why bother bogging down the PC if it is crunching! :-)

There's a bug in the current minirosetta screensaver that should hopefully be fixed in the next update. It is currently being tested on ralph.

Reviewing the tasks, it looks like they all failed upon startup under Rosetta mini 1.25, and failed with:
ERROR: in::file::zip minirosetta_database_rev21566.zip does not exist!
ERROR:: Exit from: ....srcappspublicboincminirosetta.cc line: 91
running on Win Vista with BOINC 6.1.0.

This looks like the same problem that others have seen under Rosetta mini. See the
mini 1.25 thread

One other thing you should consider, depending on where you live.

Summer is coming up quick in the US. If you live on the Top side of the world, there will be a lot of waste heat generated by an array of computer systems, which will need to be taken care of.

When talking electric bill, just don't forget about cooling all those PCs running at Max.

I have read several threads on this, so I know it has been talked about over and over. This is why I am not posting in the Crunching section.

I purchased my wife a PS3 for Mothers Day. While I was setting up folding@home on it, I sure was wishing it was a rosetta app instead.

In the Folding app, they have lights on a globe that shows where PS3s are in the world and how many are online. I highly doubt it is very accurate, but I still enjoyed seeing all the gamers that are running a useful app while they were not playing. Again, just wish Rosetta was a choice.

10) Message boards : Number crunching : Treating Cores as Processors, RAM, and headaches (Message 49482)
Posted 7 Dec 2007 by Profile jaxom1
Post:
I keep reading about memory issues. Most, if you look closely, turn out to be RAM x CORE issues. So, you have 2 GB of RAM. Great!. You get large WUs that need a lot of RAM. Oh Wait, you have a quad core.... hmm. 2048/4= not enough ram per core for the large WU that you were just given.

I think this will be straightend out, but I think the program should start thinking in "how many processors with how many cores with how much ram" terms instead of "How many processors (Yea, a core is a processor to the program) with how much ram.

This is of course fixed by telling the current program to use less processors, but then, that quad core super cruncher doesn't work as hard.

So, on a real server that has 4 quad core processors, the current setup would need 8 GB of RAM to just have 512 MB per core, if crunching is all it knows.

I guess I will quit rambling now, as everyone already knows this, but I felt like posting it since I keep seeing so many "Why does Rosetta think I don't have enough RAM" posts.

Hasn't there been a lot of linux issues lately? I know they are with stopping, starting and changing between projects, so I figure there would be more issues on a laptop.

Nothing against Linux, love it, but I think it is something to think about in THIS project.

To semi-quote a MAC commercial I just watched.

"The fastest Vista computer tested by (fill in the blank) this year was a MAC".

:-)

Should work fine.

BTW, I am a PC, not MAC user, but if I had the money, I think I would be part of the converted masses at home. At work, I am a Microsloth Sys Admin, so that is where I am coming from.

Thanks all for the input shared. I'm either going to run it on XP or possibly Linux. Not in it for the points but for the crunch, the more you do the more results for the project. I shake my head when I see a little Sony DC laptop I have crunching twice the amount of my G5 2.5 dualie. We'll see how the new one does in a few days.

then ill suggest using linux, takes less use of your cpu then MS dous, so more cpu+memory to crunch (l)

I think the word you may have missed is "More". I guess the WU needs 534753280 + 265246720 = 800000000

I would guess that once everything settles down, your computer will find work to do.

Drizzt.

Your computer has only 534753280 bytes of memory; workunit requires 265246720 more bytes
1/12/2007 7:51:20 AM|rosetta@home|Message from server: No work sent
1/12/2007 7:51:20 AM|rosetta@home|Message from server: (there was work but your computer doesn't have enough memory)

So, the PC has 534753280. The WU needs 265246720

534753280 - 265246720 = 269506560

So what gives?

let's see, F@H calculates 20 gflops per PS/3 @ $399 (40gb hdd version).

So, 5 PS/3's ($2k) should equal one core of the sx-9 (102 gflops).

$2k * 16 cpu's = $32k = a single node of the sx-9 (1.6 tflops).

$32k * ~500 (approx # of nodes in a full sx-9 cluster) = $16m (~800 tflops).

Wonder if Sony would give us a price break on an order of 40,000 PS/3's...

<checking for loose change under the sofa cushions>

well if any of you guys has the money for it, to rent it 1 month will cost you 1,8 million dollar i thought, or euro, so both ways a lot of money ;)

Rosetta currently has 160,000+ users, if only 25% of them own (were to purchase) a PS/3, we'd be near the petaflop barrier.

Although, given that Micro$oft has "donated" $$$ to Rosetta, I wonder if there's some quid pro quo that Rosetta not code for Sony's PS/3, a M$ competitor in the gaming console wars...

of course, the app would have to be written to support it.

Microsoft did not donate. The Gates Foundation Did. Get your Tax Right Offs Straight Mister!...

:-)

Seriously though, They are two distinct pools of money. Bill's Left or Right pants pockets.. ;-)

It's fixed in the code currently in SVN (the code repository). Rosetta needs to do a server upgrade before you'll be able to choose the correct country. When that will happen, only the admins here know.

i hate fighting and bickering on message boards

it frustrates me to no end.

i have enough issues in my life, don't need it in my few minutes here and there to goof around on the internet.

so, i quit my team for a while. i will be back after everyone chills. i was going to quit crunching completly for a while, but i reloaded three of my computers and pointed them at rosetta with seti as a backup.

i don't think i will post for a month or so, but the machines should crunch with out me.
