41) Message boards : Number crunching : Francais: Windows VS Linux (Message 43745)

43) Message boards : Rosetta@home Science : FAQ on diseases being explored by RAH is out of date (Message 43582)

as of yet, i have yet to figure out what RAH is working on at the moment.
there is no clear information given about what disease or protein related to a specific disease we are working on now.

i should also express that it just seems to me that we are crunching stuff to crunch stuff but there is no information in the WU text that tells us what that protein is related to or for that matter anywhere on the messages boards that tells us what is being sent out and what disease or specific part of a protein/gene/disease is being sent out.

I agree, there should at least be a sentence of explanation on the screensaver, the current doesn't help at all. There used to be some better explanations.

I see the problem that we don't really know what we're working on, I already tried to ask, push people to post the current goals, with no luck yet.
That's also the reason why I made a suggestion in another thread about a "Status Page", please see this post: [url=http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=3296&nowrap=true#42375]Link[/link]

As I said before, the lack of info about the current projects is the only downside of Rosetta.

When you don't click "show graphics" and the screensaver isn't running, it doesn't use any CPU cycles. The 10% in your preferences refers to the usage when the screensaver is running.

To completely disable the graphics function, you have to install boinc as a service.

Boinc security on Windows
Vista has many security layers and a regular user is not an administrator. Furthermore you have UAC with which you can control any admin operations and system changes. So Vista runs Boinc in a kind of "sandbox" too.

@Tom

GPGPU would be general processing GPUs - ie they can do what CPUs do now, just a whole lot faster. We're not quite there yet, but from what I've been reading we're getting there. That'd definitely make CPUs obsolete.

thanks for the info!

where did you read about that at? I don't think they can tap into your machine directly. It sounds more like sending out a command to kill bad WU's on peoples machines when they communicate their results back to the server.

Rosetta can now abort expired or unnecessary WUs on client machines from their server.

Yes, it's more like a kill command, sorry for the confusion.
I read about this new feature in these threads:

Post:
It can never be the end of DC as we know it now, since GPUs are only good at a limited amount of fields (like graphics) so are PS3s.

The CPU is the only component able to do "nearly" everything. GPUs and PS3s have advantages in some fields, but disadvantages in a lot of others.

The guys at folding@home said that they can only run one type of simulations on GPUs, another one on PS3s, but majority of tasks still need CPUs.

Wow, I'm impressed, this is the best post I read on the forums since Dr. Baker's last journal entry.

This has to be put on a subpage of the frontpage as soon as possible before it submerges.

I like the narrative, it only needs to be spiced up by a proper, clear form (like numbering the different steps, using symbols like => to show a consequence...)

The 2 questions you focused on seem clear to me, ready for a FAQ.

4. I would love help with this project! If you would be interested in helping, what would you like to contribute? Should there be a R@H wiki (like Wikipedia) or just submit contributions by email?

First of all I'd be glad to help you. I thought about the idea of a wiki (I contributed in one before), however I think it will be hard for new members to get the information they want in such a complex organisation. For instance if they type "rosetta error" in the search engine, they don't necessarily find the information they're looking for due to the very simplified language. (Encyclopedia: the reader knows a complex word and wants and explanation/more info).

In this case it's the opposite. That's why I found this way of putting it more basic: http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php

This thread seems to be quickly turning in to a "suggestions on how to improve Rosetta@home" (especially the website). That subject is too broad, and doesn't sound like what Ian took on.

I hope this doesn't imply that there won't be any improvements to the website :D

As feet1st said in the post before, there's confusion with the diseases studied. Here are a few points I'd like you to focus on ( in order of importance, 1. being the most important):

1. Is the disease related research terminated or still going on? That question should be covered in the first place. A subpage, with a list of the diseases covered and a short progress message (1 sentence is enough) on the current stage of the research (planned, ongoing, terminated, results published, ...)
This type of progress report encourages many people to keep on supporting the project at WorldCommunityGrid and Einstein.

2. The WU description should be updated more frequently (at least once a month, once every second week is ok too)

3. A newsletter could be sent to all the accounts (as SETI did) to wake up old participants and to encourage others to restart crunching rosetta. This newsletter has often been discussed among the active forumers, it should include a brief summary (otherwise nobody will read it) of the science done so far, like the HIV research.

I greatly appreciate your initiative Ian Davis, I hope some of my points can become reality :).
57) Message boards : Rosetta@home Science : Are the results of SIMAP interesting for Rosetta? (Message 42288)
Posted 18 Jun 2007 by Tom Philippart
Post:
I asked about it at the SIMAP forums some time ago:

Original answer: 23 Oct 2006:

Beste Gruesse
Thomas

http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/forum/viewtopic.php?t=567

My translation (I try to keep it as accurate as possible):

Yes, we discussed the possibilities of a collaboration. At this point it is still unsure whether the SIMAP results are useful for Rosetta. Till now this wasn't the case, because they only needed a comparison with a small protein database (PDB), which was easier to do by computing on their own than by taking data from SIMAP. Right now we're discussing whether we could widen the search for a comparison of proteins. I'm still waiting for an answer from the Rosetta team.

Greetings
Thomas

Please try if closing boinc manually before restarting solves the problem. (this could give us some clues what happened)
