You can force BOINC to use 4 processors and see if that is acceptable.

BINGO!! That's exactly what I wanted:

I set 25% of the processors === two === and Task Manager tells me three are in use; two for Rosetta and one for GPUGRID. And there's no delay in normal work.

Perfect solution! Many thanks, Tom

I stopped running Rosetta many months ago when I bought an i7. Problem was that he grabbed all eight CPUs and the fan noise was unacceptable. I did try Tthrottle but that affected all CPUs and my normal work was downgraded significantly.

Is there a way to assign n CPUs to Rosetta where n = Fan Noise OK?

Thanks, Tom

The settings in the BOINC manager should be enough...

You're right. I'm now running with all cores active, and in BOINC I've set 75% of the processors and 70% of CPU time. So I have six Rosetta threads running and the fan noise is acceptable.

I also run GPUGRID, which seems to need pretty much constant access to a CPU thread. He now has two all to himself!

Many thanks everybody!

I am curious - where are you specifying the number of CPUs to utilize - on the computing preferences web page on the Rosetta site or on the "preferences -> processor usage" frame which is a part of the BOINC manager running locally on your system?

Ah! Bingo!! I did not know about preferences in the local BOINC manager. I played there and it obeyed my settings. Thank you.

I also went looking for hyper-threading in the BIOS. No mention, but I found I could specify how many cores to use: All, 1 or 2. I tried 2. Sure enough, Rosetta came up using only four threads.

So - I have a choice: Run only 2 of the 4 cores, or restrict BOINC to 4 threads via preferences. I chose the 1st option only because the cooling fan noise was acceptable. With the 2nd option the fan noise was unacceptable without Tthrottling.

Many thanks for your help.

Thanks Chris & Chilean for answering. I had no idea that an i7 only had four real cores!!

I played with preferences and they are currently set a "use at most 1 processor" and "use at most 0.01% of CPU time". All eight threads are churning away, oblivious of my settings!!

Now I'll see if I can turn off hyper-threading in the BIOS...

I have eight processors. If I don't control them, the cooling fan noise is unacceptable since my PC is in our living space.

I control them with Tthrottle. It works, but I would rather not have Tthrottle running when I can control the fan noise by limiting the number of processors running Rosetta.

For the past five days I've been running with the preference set for five processors active. No difference. All eight processors continue active.

How do I activate this processor limit option?

Thanks, Tom

05/12/2009 10:09:24 rosetta@home Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.

05/12/2009 10:09:29 rosetta@home Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

"GPU"????

Call off the dogs. Nine WUs just downloaded.

Unfortunately, you can only change the blink rate, and set it to activate at boot time or not.

Some time ago I ditched Zonealarm because its tray icon blinked continually when BOINC was active. Seems there's some communication between BOINC components, local to a PC, that looks like outside network activity.

I just installed Windows 7. Its network access tray icon has no animation as in previous versions. I found this.

It behaves just like Zonealarm. If BOINC is active it flashes continually. If I exit BOINC it only responds to real network traffic.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

Thanks, Tom

There's your problem. The capacitors on the motherboard are old and the CPU is generating errors under heavy power load (computation). Time to throw away the system. Get a 2nd opinion if you want, but 'fraid that's what's going on.

Well, not wishing to throw it away without trying something, I focused on the RAM. I removed three 1 gig sticks and ran Rosetta with 1 gig for two days without a hiccough. Then I added a second stick and ran for two days; no problems. Then I removed the two sticks and inserted the other two of four; four days sweetness and light. Then I bit the bullet and took it to 4 gigs. All is well!

Funny...

Pentium D, is it? How old is that machine?

3-1/4 years. It's a Dell Dimension 9100. It's been running BOINC 24/7 since new.

Last june, a month before the warrantee expired, it died. Dell fitted a refurbished MB and PS.

For a year it's been running with 4 gigs of Crucial Ballistix RAM.

While the Rosetta chaos below unfolds, GPUGRID merrily rolls along.

Getting lots 'n' lots of these:

My results can be seen here.

I migrated to BOINC 6.10.17. No change. I detached/attached Rosetta. The first two WUs failed within a minute; computation error. Two more WUs are running right now and are at 15%, but I know they aren't gunna complete.

I've no idea what else to try.

Well - gave up on Rosetta and attached to Einstein. Guess what? Immediate computation errors! I attached to Climate Prediction and that is running fine.

With a million credits, you are probably already aware of it...

Aware of what?? No comprendo...

The other area to check would be the amount of memory you are allowing BOINC to use. As a task gets started running it will initialize everything and allocate memory required to really get started on the study of the protein. During that first few minutes of running is when you are most likely to hit BOINC's memory limit if it is set too low. The task ends up suspended with a status of "waiting for memory". The advanced view of BOINC let's you easily see the task status and message.

Sorry, but that's so much gobbledegook to me. I'm a simple soul. I know how to get BOINC running and attach projects, but that's it.

Right now I have two WUs running on the duo. I tried doing an update to get more. Nothing. I guess by morning I'll be out of work, again.

XP Home:

This morning every queued WU was suspended (not by me!). I detached, uninstalled, installed 6.10.17. Could not get WUs.

Just tried again, four hours later. Got 13 WUs. As each finished download it was marked "suspended".

Help!

Tomba,

<snip>

Then there is one last area to check. Check the menu bar, click on activity and check that the status checked there is not "suspend".

That was it! I set it to "run always" and away she went!! Many thanks.

How it got set to "suspend" is a mystery.

Tom
