sorry if I sounded a bit fierce before...

I don't know of any problems specific to win2k that would cause this (win2k is the win os I still use most, and I have not experienced this problem).

A couple of elementary points - you have still got No next to "run while computer in use" in your settings?

And you didn't accidentally change venue by mistake?

And is it actually slowing down the computer visibly? (Some people can';t tell when BOINC is running, as it has such a low priority, other users find that the keyboard has noticeable delays, etc)

Instead of killing the Roseta task, you may like to stop BOINC (open the manager and click file->exit) and see if this solves the problem for now. If so you have a work-around that will preserve more of your work than your current response.

See if restarting BOINC brings the problem back immediately, or only when the s/s has run again?

Finally: did this problem arise immediately after installing a win update? If so it might be that the win malicious software removal kit has decided to hide your keyboard from BOINC. Some anti virus software does do this already, as intercepting keystrokes is an indicator of some kinds of malice (eg password stealing).

I have seen a fix for this whe it occurs with a virus checker, but can't remember where - anyone else remember?

R~~

using "exit" from the menu seems to clean up nicely - at least now there's no need to terminate the process.
After restarting the boinc application activity is suspended and it doesnt use CPU.

I haven't changed anything since the initial installation many many months ago

its not slowing down the computer at all - but i suspect this to be because of the dual core cpu i have - boinc keeps one core busy while the other works for me. I notice its behaviour though the task-manager which shows 50% usage.
But it never was this way - it always suspended after i touched the mouse.

I dont know if the virusscanner is to blame but boinc clearly logs "Suspending network activity - user is active" so it receives the interrupt.

then why isn't it suspending the process?

sorry - i didn't mean for you guys to get all worked up, there i made my computer visible, please don't shoot me

and no, i didnt think of doing a search for screensaver because the screensaver itself behaves just fine (and terminates as its supposed to) - its the number-crunching-process which keeps on going.

i'm behind a company firewall of which i have no idea what it is.
i dont have any firewall software on my machine installed, the only security-related program locally running is Symantec Antivirus.

I have weeks to install anything new, or make any system-wide changes to my OS.
This problem is new - started this week afaik

I'm running Win2K SP4
[Edit] Boinc is 5.4.9 - libcurl/7.15.3 OpenSSL/0.9.8a zlib/1.2.3[/edit]

again, my apologies for not being more precise

hi all,

everything used to work fine, but now since a few days rosetta (or boinc) does not always suspend when the screen saver is interrupted (by moving the mouse).

Looking in the logs, it actually says "Suspending network activity - user is active" (as it should) but the CPU keeps burning 100% on the "rosetta_5.32_wi" process with no end in sight.

It didnt used to do this, but its doing it now
I need to terminate the process in order for the CPU to stop working.
It does not always do this, i estimate this to happen about 50% of the cases

Has anybody else seen this happen?
Any suggestions?

Is killing the process doing damage to the workload?

Indirectly Rosetta made the local news here in Cleveland, OH. In there little tech segment on Fox 8 they were talking about something and had the CNN.COM page on the screen. On the CNN page was the picture of Dr. Baker & a computer running Rosetta. The image was large enough to see the graphics and the news people told the views to go to CNN to read more about whatever they were talking about.

Your probably talking about Your dusty old PC may hold the cure for cancer

Immediately after publication a massive 3500 hosts were added to the R@H project within a single day (as oppose to ~500 a day) so i guess it reached the masses.
Have a look at this very impressive chart.

maybe this should be added to the list of 'News & Articles about Rosetta' on the main page..

It must be having some great impact....over 3,000 hosts added this past day. Incredible!

Yes, i was hoping it would spark interest
And it is a major and well visited site.

Were did you find the +3000 number?
