21) Message boards : Cafe Rosetta : Why I love Rosetta (Message 8249)

-It has the best graphics.
-It gives the most credits.
-It has the best explanations both for those with no scientific background and those with an extensive scientific background.
-It is the most responsive in the forums.
-It is a winner that is always getting better. In recent credits only SETI, Climate, and Einstein are ahead of this project.

Great responses all! Because of the potential for eventually helping with diabetes, I suggest diabetes be listed under "Disease Related Research," on the front page.
23) Message boards : Number crunching : Should I abort work unit? (Message 5866)

Normally Rosetta work units last between one and six hours, but I have one which is over 11 hours, still working, and still only shows 1% done. It does not look right, but I hate to abort a unit if there is science there. Any advice? Should I continue to 24 hours before aborting? I run 1.8 MHz computer with 496 Mb RAM.

I am glad you haven't given up. Einstein@home is also a very stable project. If you have each resource share set at 100 in your preferences then each project will get an equal amount of work averaged out over time. Because I like Rosetta I have given it a 200 and the other projects a 100 so Rosetta gets twice as much work. A nice thing about BOINC is that your computer can crunch on other projects if one is down. Over the long haul, BOINC will give each project the time share you designate.

I believe seti will come back eventually, all projects do this from time to time. With the massive transition, I believe it will be early January until things start to settle down at SETI.

If you ask a question in one of these forums, you can subscribe to it so they e-mail you when a response is posted. Connect when it is convenient for you, BOINC does not mind uploading several work units from several projects at once. Work units are also of different sizes, even from the same project, because BOINC is more flexible on taking different sized investigations.

You are doing very well, just take one problem at a time and don't be afraid to ask questions. BOINC people are generally very nice as long as you don't accuse them of evil destroyers of classic and carry on about how awful BOINC is. Thank you very much for giving BOINC a chance!

Because death and disabilities from diabetes is significant and growing, perhaps mentioning it will help Rosetta. When Rosetta was started I got this nice reply when I asked about diabetes.

"Yes, there is a chance that this may eventually help with diabetes along with other serious, high profile medical issues and diseases. For example, there may already be researchers working on diabetes that are using our freely available structure prediction server, Robetta, which uses Rosetta and will hopefully be improved by this project. Or at least there may be in the future."

Do the new work units take us any closer to finding the lowest energy protein fold? To my unscientific eye it looks from the diagrams like some do and some don't.

27) Message boards : Number crunching : screensaver (Message 3101)

Hi Ed, look at thread below, the screensaver is not ready yet. When it is I'm sure they'll announce it on the homepage.

It looked like they did announce it on their homepage ("we are currently beta testing the screen saver version developed by Jack Schonbrun.") and the screensaver was listed in under the application button on the homepage. Still, even if they don't have one for awhile, I am happy with this project. Folding@home has not even gotten its BOINC version yet, Predictor does not have one, LHC's fuzzy graphic does not accurately represent what they are doing, and SETI's is not as good as the old SETI classic despite the options. I bet if they finally do get one, it will be great. Even if it is not, this will remain one of my favorite projects because of the clear and frequent communication.

I think it is great that you are trying to put together a screensaver! Right now it does not seem to work and the show graphic button does not darken when Rosetta is running. Love you guys, great feedback in an understandable form! I believe your communication is superior to the other projects and long term you will attract an ever increasing number of crunchers.

I really love Rosetta, already the top dog of folding protein projects.

Well, not when *I* look at the numbers ... maybe within the Team ...

Just my biased personal opinion, not based on numbers or other objective criteria. Having a favorite BOINC project is like falling in love - not a scientific process.

Judging by BOINC Synergy, XML stats seem to be stuck at 2.1 million credits and 1,260 users. Not a high priority to fix, I know, just for your information.

The stats update on our site every six hours. I do not know about the other sites, but I do know our site has been consistently updating the xml files.

Right you are! BOINC Synergy has fixed the problem. I really love Rosetta, already the top dog of folding protein projects.

32) Message boards : Number crunching : My experience with Rosetta WU's (Message 506)

With a celeron 1.8 GHz processor, 496 mg of RAM, and windows xp, it takes about 4 hours a work unit, about 4.5 hours if BOINCing with another project.

On further experience, it takes much longer if BOINCing because the unit keeps going back and starting over again at a previous point. The total time spent on the work unit also goes back. The temporary solution is to suspend other projects until I completely finish all Rosetta units as it takes too long otherwise. The client is stable, however, and this seems like a great project with a direction and purpose I do not see at other protein folding projects. I am confident that with more waypoints the program will be able to run smoothly with other projects.

According to http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/index.php
as of 09-25-05 we now have over a million credits, 93 teams, and members from 45 countries! That is a pretty good start for a new project! I hope the developer will be pleasantly surprised when he comes back from vacation.

I finally aborted mine Sunday morning when in the last 12 hours the time to completion went from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. I like the site and the forum is responsive, but 2 days and the % just keeps going up is too much. Someone sait you may need 512 megs of RAM, that could be as I have only 496. I will try again when they have their new windows application.

I know this is a secondary consideration at best, but it would be nice to have something restful to switch on and look at for a few minutes every 30-50 hours or so. Also as more and more BOINC projects come on line it would make Rosetta more competitive.
