I don't know what your results page was showing two days ago, but it is there now.

Task 734767280

In terms of runtime, that is a setting within your Rosetta website profile. If your work units are normally around 24 hours each then your setting is probably at a 24 hour runtime. Feel free to change it if you prefer something else.

Post:
Apparently this type of problem can be caused if you used a third party account manager like Grid Republic or BAM to sign up originally. The normal process would be to use the same third party tool to remove the account.

However, if you didn't use a third party account manager or can't remember how to access it after all this time, Mod.Sense's solution should hopefully resolve the problem.

Your last successful task was for version 3.52 and your first failure (and the sample of subsequent failures I checked) were all for version 3.54. With such a clear demarcation of success and failure I would definitely check your anti-virus/firewall settings as a first step.

Well it has been 4 weeks and your computer is still churning through nothing but errors. It is a shame when someone posts a question and never bothers to return to see the answer.

I suggest that future readers of this thread remember that one final step in trying to resolve their problems.

but the second error, "exited with zero status but no 'finished' file," is returned for nearly every unit I process.

It is a common error that can affect any BOINC project, not just Rosetta. Unfortunately no specific cause has been identified as yet, so it may take a bit of effort to track down a solution that works for your system.

You may want to try some of the solutions suggested at this BOINC FAQ website.

I had the same problem until I increased my CPU usage to "Use at most 100.0 percent of CPU time" (to avoid heat problems in the summer I reduced the number of cores BOINC can use instead). As soon as that setting was changed all my exit zero errors disappeared instantly.

Hopefully your problem will also be as easy to solve, but there are some alternative suggestions on that site as well.

---

Edit: I see from the posts above that you already tried those solutions. Unfortunately if they didn't work then there is not much you can do other than play about with your BOINC and system settings in the hope of stumbling across a solution.

Looking at your computer information available on the website, they all seem fine except for the Windows 2000 Advanced Server, which hasn't had a good result since at least 1st December 2014. A quick check of a few of the tasks shows they never even started, which as Mod.Sense suggests could indicate an anti-virus or firewall changing or blocking the files before they reach the system.

As it is a server computer it could also be that the System Administrator has altered the permissions for the BOINC programme so it no longer communicates correctly with the Rosetta servers (are you the system administrator or is that someone else?).
28) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Rosetta not running (Message 77830)
Posted 16 Jan 2015 by Murasaki
Post:
I don't have a Mac system, but I expect your BOINC interface should have an "Event log" in one of the options. You need to read your event log to see why Rosetta is not giving you any work.

  • It could be that your computer is requesting work but none is currently available for your Mac operating system/processor.
  • Or you can't connect to the Rosetta server for some reason.
  • Or your computer has done too much work for Rosetta recently and is waiting for the Malaria project to catch up before requesting more Rosetta work.

You may want to continue this topic in the Number Crunching forum as relatively few people read this part of the forum.

I have not made any changes - the dual core named unit is rarely touched . but my available time is less than half . I did an update and later a scan for any malware . the other is only slowed by facebook - I lowered the utilization to 97 % dropping one rossetta core and speeding up the GPU usage - other than the graphics cards and hard drives the cpu memory and motherboard are the same - also I defragged the drives but the dual name system is auto defrag once a week

With public access I can't see any differences between your computers other than the OS installation, so I will continue to use that to differentiate between the machines.

Have you set 97% CPU utilisation on the Windows 7 machine? Exit(o) errors can sometimes be caused when CPU utilisation is below 100%. I'd suggest putting the setting back to 100% for a short while to see if that clears up the problem; as a second test, temporarily deactivate use of the GPU and see if that resolves things.

For the SP1 computer, it is possible that the strain of 4 tasks on your CPU plus a separate task on your GPU is causing BOINC to write a lot of data to the memory swap file on your computer. Do you use an SSD in this computer? Apparently BOINC doesn't always react well to using the swap file on an SSD under Windows 7 and 8. I'd suggest testing deactivating the GPU and then testing reducing the number of CPU cores to see if the problem clears up. If either test works you may want to try reducing the amount of Rosetta work you do, perhaps by giving more work to a less memory-hungry project.

If the problem persists even with less strain on the CPU and GPU I'd suggest doing diagnostic tests on your memory to see if there is a fault with your hardware.

It helps if you can give a link to some of the affected tasks, or at least give the task ID. However, looking through the logs your two computers seem to have developed unrelated faults. Have you done any hardware or software upgrades recently?

Computer 1615483 (Windows 7 SP1):

Reports of memory errors (both RAM and disk errors) in tasks 707727918, 707727911, 707727894, 707722337 and 706971831 among others. The older of those tasks have been completed successfully by other participants, which suggests it is an issue on your side, not the WU.

Computer 1614373 (Windows 7):

"Too many exit(0)s" errors in all tasks. That implies something is preventing your tasks from completing - new software installed or anti-virus upgrade? The older tasks were completed successfully by other users.

708484332, 708114044, 707980497 and 707859337 among others.

In the second machine there was a sudden change of behaviour on all tasks received since 26 December. Did you make any changes on Christmas day?

The first machine's problems date back to the start of December.

I have 5 teraflops power doing nothing most games for 1 hour a day. What a waste considering that could help my fellow human.

Some of the scientists have tested GPU processing of Rosetta tasks in the last couple of years. While a small number of functions benefitted from the abilities of a GPU, most of the Rosetta work did not.

In general terms GPUs are great for tasks that you can split into small chunks (each requiring a low amount of memory) that can be run in parallel. Unfortunately a lot of Rosetta work requires a large amount of memory or needs to be run in sequence, thereby losing the advantages of the GPU.

You can read further discussions about GPU processing on Rosetta in the Number Crunching Forum on the main message board.

If you want to use your GPU for protein related research you may want to give POEM@home a shot. They have been trying to relaunch their GPU client in the last couple of months, though I haven't been paying attention to their progress.

I tried a search in this forum for free-dc but could not find anything.

I'd not heard of Free-DC before but looking at it now, it seems very similar to a hundred other distributed computing team websites (with the caveat that Free-DC says it is open to everyone). What selection criteria would you suggest the Rosetta administrators use to select useful links while still keeping the list to a manageable size?
34) Message boards : Number crunching : How do I set Boinc to disregard a project? (Message 77750)
Posted 22 Dec 2014 by Murasaki
Post:
Use the "Detach" button in your BOINC Manager (Projects tab).

I don't have detach (Boinc 7.4.27) but I guess that's "Remove". I kind of want to still show it in Boinc as a past project though and I'm guessing "Remove" does what the name implies.

Yes, remove serves the same purpose as detatch.

You could set "no new tasks" but your system will continue to routinely try to check in with the SIMAP server for updates even though it won't try to download anything. It won't happen too often as your systems should learn to back off from the server, but it will take up a tiny amount of bandwidth and processing power as well as clogging your Event log with redundant entries.

BOINC stats will continue to remember your old project data despite it being removed from your BOINC Manager. I have five projects listed at BOINC stats despite only having three active in my BOINC Manager at this time.

I would guess the middle one is related to robetta - still not sure what robetta is but would guess its a dev branch/R&D/beta branch of the rosetta software?

Expanding on svincent's answer, Robetta was a powerful computer in the bakerlab using the Rosetta software to work on non-commercial projects submitted by scientists around the world. Some time ago the Robetta work queue was linked to BOINC so that tasks can be sent to either bakerlab's internal computer systems or to Rosetta@home participants.

svincent's link doesn't work for me, so you may want to try just http://robetta.bakerlab.org/ instead.

Zibo Chen appears to be the name of a scientist working in bio-molecular design.

I have just had a failed task id 695458545 when it said in the log it could not create a whole load of files from unpacking a zip file. I noticed though that the paths had "/" to separate the directories rather than "". Surely this is not the reason?!
Thanks for any comments

Nothing to do with the direction of the slash. There were a few batches where the scientists made really long file names (250+ characters) that broke some of the Windows processes. This was reported to the Rosetta team in the Number Crunching forum and they have updated their processes to prevent long named work units being submitted.

i get error 998 when screensaver comes on or i go to show grapics. it says LoadLibrary failed with error 998:Invalid access to memory location??????????

Typing your error into Google shows that it is normally a problem with the graphics card drivers. Make sure you install the latest drivers and support software for your model of card and also uninstall any old graphics card drivers that are lurking in your system.

In order to become a User of the Day, you need to have a Profile. So until you create a profile you will never have that privilege.

Bzzzt. Wrong answer. ^_~

This thread is about "Predictor of the day", the account with the lowest energy prediction on any given day. "User of the day" does depend on having a profile but is run under a completely separate process.

A cursory glance through the list of past predictors of the day also yields a number of those charity engine users (cexxxxxxx users) that flooded in a couple of months ago.

Rather unsurprising. Charity Engine was producing 80 Teraflops per day (1/4 of the entire speed of Rosetta at the time) for a period of two months. On probability alone "ce" accounts should have been popping up every fourth day, though the odds of a specific "ce" account getting the title are still astronomically small.

Except that I've NEVER seen it except on Rosetta in almost 13 years of crunching. AND only appears on Rosetta right now.

Be glad that you have been lucky enough not to see it elsewhere then. A quick google search finds this report from earlier this month about the same problem at SETI@home. As I said, it is a BOINC issue, not a rosetta specific issue.

The first time, several years ago, I was advised to set up internet time syncing

Now they say do NOT use time syncing??

It is a bug with an unknown cause. As more people report symptoms it becomes easier to give a correct diagnosis and suggested treatment. Also BOINC has developed a lot over the years; what may have been a correct treatment with BOINC version 4 might not be the best treatment today.
