Looks like it's not allowed to run... change in permissions, running under a different user account, change in security software and/or an update with a false positive for Rosetta (as mod.sense suggested above) could all be possible causes.

The screenshots given do not provide any useful troubleshooting information. From the log it appears that the database file is failing a hash comparison check, i.e. the contents of the file as stored on your computer doesn't match known good values. Is the download getting interrupted and the file truncated? Are you using any sort of data compression or proxy server (or any other non-standard configuration) on your internet connection? Sorry, but there just isn't widespread reporting of your problem, which suggests something is wrong on your end.

and PS the forum is integrated with the server software

David and Sergey,

Thanks for the updates and the links!

While I may not understand all the statistics here, I do see a large list of competitors and I know what #1 means :)

I'm glad to see that processing all these workunits has led to advances in the field.

Hash failures on a downloaded file? Does your internet service compress the data (used to be typical on cellular internet)? Are you having any internet or router problems that would cause a relatively large file to fail with a connection reset therefore truncating the file? Any other atypical internet connection possibilities, like perhaps a proxy server? Just brainstorming here.

All this stuff is front page and Twitter feed worthy to be honest...last regular news feed was from August... last tweet from March '14. Don't sell yourselves short; it attracts new users and helps maintain interest with current users ("is this really worth running?").

I've noticed a couple of my boxes have gone idle, apparently at random, recently... it appears this is the cause:

765: 25-Nov-2014 13:57:26 (low) [rosetta@home] Sending scheduler request: To report completed tasks.
766: 25-Nov-2014 13:57:26 (low) [rosetta@home] Reporting 2 completed tasks
767: 25-Nov-2014 13:57:26 (low) [rosetta@home] Requesting new tasks for CPU
768: 25-Nov-2014 13:57:29 (low) [rosetta@home] Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
769: 25-Nov-2014 13:57:29 (low) [rosetta@home] No work sent
770: 25-Nov-2014 13:57:29 (low) [rosetta@home] Rosetta Mini for Android is not available for your type of computer.

This then puts the time for the next scheduler request off until at least the next day. I forgot to look for a specific time before I manually did a 'boinccmd --project update' but it's at least 24 hours.

Sorry that I couldn't be of more specific help. I've never seen this behavior on any of my computers as long as I've been a Rosetta cruncher. Considering that no one else has reported any specific similarities to the issue you're seeing I've got nothing else better to offer than it's an aberration of some sort with your PC.

He's just specifying a user to execute the command as instead of the account he's logged in with. Alternatively, you could add your normal user to a group "boinc" and give that group read/write on /var/lib/boinc.

after the --join_acct_mgr switch, the target url doesn't have /rosetta after boinc.bakerlab.org. I'm not sure if it's mandatory or not; however, I have never tried it without /rosetta.

I think Polian's point is that it might be throttled and then hit full speed during the spike before throttling again. It could be a few other things like one thread working the cpu harder than two because of a memory bottleneck or something like that. Try downloading cpu-z to see what's happening, but cooling is a good starting point to fix it. Might need to redo the thermal compound if the heatsink is clean.

Yes, that's what I was trying to convey, thanks! CPU-Z would tell you for sure as dcdc says.

Except that it "hits full speed" repeatably in the beginning of Rosetta units and no where else. The odds of this happening by chance are astronomical.

The cooling is still the most plausible explanation. Check your fan/water loop and thermal interface material. Stock heat sink grease or TIM pads have a shorter lifespan than, say, Arctic Silver. Assuming that you're running at stock clock speeds, 83C is far too hot. A generic explanation (since I'm not really in the know here) would be that it could be that Rosetta is more taxing on the CPU vs SETI, I don't know. I get higher temps when doing stability testing with Prime95 (and even higher yet with IntelBurnTest) than I do when running Rosetta.

I think you've got it right Polian. If you don't make a profit with 100 change machines installed, maybe installing another 100 will give you some economies of scale :) Keep attaching servers until you become POD!

:)

I took your advice, but since I'm out of physical boxes, I spun up three dual-virtual core VMs each on Microsoft Azure and Google Compute. Windows 10 preview on Azure for fun (could have gone linux but felt like playing) and OpenSUSE on Google.

Actually, this was just a weak excuse to explore cloud services which has been on my to-do list for ages now. It will be interesting to note the performance differences between the two services. Right now Microsoft is offering $200 free trial credit over 30 days and Google is offering $300 over 60 days. If my calculations are correct three dual core VMs each should last almost a month on either before free trial credit is exhausted.

Keep up the crunching! Wow! 8 MILLION credits! NICE! "Your winning ticket MAY already be in the mail!"

Sheesh, you're right... With computing power available when Rosetta first launched, even a million seemed completely out of reach. The first box I attached was a 4U Dell monstrosity...I think it weighed 200 pounds... quad-CPU (one core each at that time, of course :) ) 700MHz Pentium-II based Xeon, although it may have been a PIII. Can't remember; slept since then :)

A logical guess could be that your CPU is hitting thermal interlock temperatures and is throttling the clock down to prevent damage; thus the resulting drop in temperature. It might be time to perform an inspection on your cooling system.

Hi folks,

I've been doing this for years now... well, off and on...and I've never completed a result that was "lowest energy".

This guy has been doing it for a month, has a total credit of 241 and a RAC of 9. A cursory glance through the list of past predictors of the day also yields a number of those charity engine users (cexxxxxxx users) that flooded in a couple of months ago.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bothered in the least. I'm more amused than anything... I'm chuckling to myself as I write this. Should I not be using a twelve hour run time and use something shorter? Is processing time not being used as efficiently as it could be with a shorter run time?

Today I just racked back in a bunch of crap servers I had laying around at work and got them crunching. This thing won't beat me. :)

Basically, I'm just wondering, am I doing it wrong? LOL

Don't think so; if you look at those User IDs, they all seem to be randomly generated - ce followed by a series of numbers.

Hmm, I also suspected this but the IP's from the logs were coming from various places. Maybe I'll have to disable new users for now until we figure things out.

If it's coming from all over - DDoS then... oh dear. This is conjecture, but it's plausible that someone wrote malicious code to install BOINC as a background service, create a new user and attach it to Rosetta.

I just picked a random new user ID, 680000 and went up by one from there

Anyone know when this upload problem will be resolved. If the servers are online then it seems like DNS can't resolve the IP addr for the upload server. My same machines are not having an issue with E@H.

I'm not seeing DNS problems at all. The names are being resolved. The servers aren't responding, likely due to significantly throttled traffic as the Rosetta problems thread and the front page indicates.

It will be fixed when it's fixed. I'm sure they don't enjoy their own project not receiving needed data, either. In the mean time, attach to another project or turn the computer off, walk away, and come back later.
