I Upgraded all my PC's to v5.4.9 a few Days ago & that seemed to take care of the problem for a few days. This morning I Upgraded just 1 PC to v5.4.11 and went out in the yard for a few hours & when I came back in the Error was on that PC again.

But that may have had something to do with Zone Alarm wanting the OK for the new Version Connection. I okayed it & will have to wait & see if it gets it again.

It's bad enough having to Pay for the Electricity but what I'm so Freaking Tired of is seeing that BOINC Can't Connect to the Internet & Would I like to try again.

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't see that Error on half my PC's, and the PC's are just sitting there doing nothing & eating up Electricity when there's WU's on the PC's but BOINC would like to know If I would like to Reconnect before it will Process them.

So I have to Shut down BOINC & Restart it again before it will Reconnect & any Projects I'm running that don't have Checkpoints the WU's start back at 0 Time again. So on top of just sitting Idle waiting for me to make a Decision the WU's are lost to, or at least have to be restarted ... It's enough to have me thinking of just chucking it all and saying the hell with it, it's not worth it anymore ... 0_o

I guess you mean the 5.3.28 version? :-) Maybe some more light is needed? ;-)

That was the one Rom asked us to upgrade to. And it is pretty stable, runs fine on my computer.

v5.3.28 Blows as far as I'm concerned. The BOINC Manager will use between 2-3% of the CPU even when it isn't open. The only way to get it to stop using the 2-3% is to Close the Manager completly.

It will also use 5-50% of the CPU if you open the Manager and the Work or now called Task Window, it acts real jerky at times too when adjusting the Windows ... I never seen any of this with v5.2.15 the previous version I was using ...

I have a weird one going right now on 1 Computer. I have my Preferences set to run the WU's in 2 Hours & most of the WU's do run in that amount of Time give or take 10-15 Minutes.

But this one has been running for 4:22:30 now & only showing 38.71% done, at least it is showing some progress so I guess I'll just have to see what happens with it ... :)

The WU ID shows this (Workunit error - check skipped) which is a fairly common error across the BOINC Projects. As long as it shows that you won't get any Credit unless the Dev's intervene & manually give you Credit for it ... Sorry

But when I connected this time, MORE 7-day-deadline WUs were downloaded -- __despite__ me having specified "no more work". WHY is the rosetta project not giving me control over what work my system does ?
.

Are you sure your really specifying not to get any more work from Rosetta.

When the Tab shows No New Work you will actually get more work & when the Tab shows Allow New Work is when you won't get any more work from Rosetta.

It really can be a little confusing until you get used to which way the Tab should be ... IMO

Something as radical as changing the deadline from a month to a week can play havoc with work queues, and require some adjustment by us crunchers.
==========

I have to agree on that Angus, but then thats what the Abort Tab is for I figure, which I have no regrets on using when a Project pulls something like that ... I don't like my other Projects getting put on the back shelf because 1 Project decides to Override the other Projects by cutting their Deadline down so dramatically without warning ...

The BOINC system is not designed to accommodate a 900%-1000% variation in WU size. It is as simple as that. Eventually this leads to longer WUs failing.

Thats the Bottom Line, the DCF gets totally out of Range for the longer WU's to complete successfully. I brought this up some time ago, but like the 1% (or other % point) stuck WU's which have been present since & before I joined the Project nothing seems to be done about it.

I'm sure the Dev's are trying to correct both problems as it has to be a pain in the Rear End to have them brought up day after day in the Forum ...

Here's another ABINITIO WU that exceeded the maximum CPU time.

Yup, I just had one do the same thing with over 10 hours on it, I was watching it because I didn't think it would make it. The first ABINITIO took under 3 hours to do & it reset the time to completion to under 5 hours.

Then the second ABINITIO stumbled it's way to over 10 hours & was only showing 75% Completion, I had a feeling it wouldn't make it ...

One thought DID just occur to me. I hate to perhaps seem biased, but are those seeing the 1% problem running Predictor@Home? Just thinking about it, I have stopped doing PPAH.

Easy to answer, is anyone getting 1% errors commonly NOT running PPAH?

Paul, I have not run Predictor@home since starting out @ the Rosetta Project. I was getting the 1% Error quit a bit some time ago but like you I haven't had one that I can recall for at least the last 2-3 Weeks.

The only Problem's I have right now is sometimes when I suspend a WU it will give me a Computation Error, any more I try not to Suspend or Shut down the BOINC Manager & Exit BOINC until the Rosetta WU has finished to minimize the Computation Error's ...

We can add such a feature/preference in the next application update. It can be a scaling factor or something similar to what is described below that users can set in their project specific preferences.

As long as it's adjustable to the WU Length each User is comfortable with then everybody should be happy ... :)
